  • Clannad - Buachaill Ón Éirne (Boy from the Erne)
    Lyrics
Buachaill ón Éirne mé is bhréagfainn féin cailín deas óg.
Ní iarrfainn bó spré léi, tá mé féin saibhir go leor
Is liom Corcaigh dá mhéid é, dhá thaobh an ghleanna, is Tír Eoghain,
Is mura n-athra' mé béasaí, is mé an t-oidhre ar chontae Mhuigheo.
Buachailleacht bó, mo leo, nár chleacht mise riamh
ach ag imirt is ag ól le hógmhná deasa fá shliabh.
Má chaill mé mo stór ní dóigh gur chaill mé mo chiall
Is ní mó liom do phóg ná an bhróg atá ar caitheamh le bliain.
    A chuisle 's a stór
    Ná pós an seanduine liath
Ach pós an fear óg, mo Leo
    Mura mairfidh sé ach bliain
    Nó beidh tú go fóill
Gan ó nó mac os da chionn
    A shilleadh an deor tráthnóna
    Nó ar maidin go trom
    Translation:
I am a boy from the Erne and I'd coax a nice young girl,
I wouldn't ask for a dowry with her, I'm rich enough myself,
I own Cork, big as it is both sides of the glen and Tyrone,
And if I don't change my ways I'll be the heir for County Mayo.
Cow herding, my Leo, I did not never practice,
But playing and drinking with new young women by the mountain.
If I lost my wealth and I don't think I lost my sense,
And your kiss is no more to me than a show worn for a year.
My love and treasure, don't marry the old grey man,
But marry the young man, my Leo, even though he lives but a year,
Or you'll still be without a daughter or son above you,
Crying in the afternoon or in the morning hard

For me this one of Clannad's best songs. I don't speak a word of Gaelic, but this tune is truly beautiful.

This is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Clannad are amazing. I came back today because I have been feeling melancholy and this song is soothing, even though it has a sad tone to me. It helped me to have a good cry.

This is the best version of the song Buachaill ón Éirne.
    Moreover, Máire's voice is wonderful.

I've never been to Ireland and I don't know anything about where this is, but I'll bet it's a beautiful place. No other people is as good as the Irish when it comes to a good heart-rending song and Clannad is the best of the best.
As I sit here in the Blue Ridge I can close my eyes and it almost seems like I am transported 3000 miles to there.

I grew up listening to Clannad and they are one of the few groups which make me proud to come from the land of Ireland. Great musicianship and and the sublime voice of Maire Brennan. We are just passing through and music like this anchors us to our past ancestry. Sometimes it is good to take a break and reflect on life.

    THE BOY FROM THE ERNE
I'm a boy from the Erne and I could charm a nice young girl
I would not ask for her wealth as I am rich enough myself
I own a good part of Cork, two side of the glen in Tir Eoghainn
And not to repeat myself I'm the heir of County Mayo
I will go tomorrow to make ale in the wood
Without a cot without a boat without a pinch of gruel with me
But leaves of the branches as bedclothes over my head
And think well done for you as you watch me from over there
A cowherd, my pet, I've never been accustomed to be
Instead of playing and drinking with the nice young women on the mountainside
If I lost my riches I probably didn't lose my senses
And your kiss is no more to me now than a shoe worn for a year
My darling and my love don't marry the grey old man
But marry a young man, my pet, if he only lives but a year
Or you will be without a descendant to succeed you
And you'd shed sorrowful tears from morning till night

Quite right! Moya's voice is as nice as her sister Enya's to me. I just watched this and realized that the video that is shown during the music actually is, I am pretty sure, video footage for another song entirely. I think I have seen this video as a music video for the song/hymn "Athair ar Neamh" by Enya (EIthne). It is filmed in Gleann Nimhe in Dún Lúiche in the Gaoth Dobhair area where Enya, Moya and family were born and brought up. Beautiful place

I wouldn't say that. As of 2021 there are many, many fine young songwriters, singers, and musicians performing their art in Ireland, and for that matter all over the world. The concept of superstars and supergroups is waning mainly due to the advent of accessible multimedia imo.

Daithi...like many words in Irish, "leo" can have more than one meaning. Yes, it can mean "with them," but "mo leo," specificially, is a dialect expression meaning something along the lines of "alas."

It's more likely 'mo lao' which is an endearment meaning 'my calf' as you might say 'my lamb'...However, as I listen to her,it could be 'monuar (alas).
