Are you Filipino? We just got back from our trip and this happened to my mom twice but didn’t get anything since we took care of each other. I glared at them and firmly said no.
The first instance was 1 woman like this pretending to be pregnant and using a big ba She said sorry and stepped out. I told her I’m sorry too and to go out.
As long as you are aware of your surroundings and how they act you will be ok. Usually their accent is also Romanian so they’re kind of easy to spot.

When I was in Rome for a school trip I had a shoulder bag. Everybody walked with a big bag but I wanted safety and comfort. In the metro I was the only alert one.

Too many of them. And I’m told their skills are handed down within families. They also use razors to cut the bottom of outside pockets on backpacks where they know devices are often kept. Not my direct experience, just youtube searches for pickpockets since I’m touch averse, pretty reactive and might bite a hand contacting my body.

I hate to say this, but each time I am in Italy, the most stressful aspect is this. Being on buses, trains, or anywhere there are crowds, you have to be on alert.
In the one year I lived in Rome, I was pickpocketed twice, and I managed to slap the hand away on a third attempt. I was told that the best pickpockets in Europe make the rounds of major tourist spots, traveling from city to city. But each city has its own “experts” too.
It’s too bad they got u 3 times. Shows how much they get so many ppl. The pick pocket just transferred to the man working with her all the iPhones and wallets she just pick pocketed. He gave her thumbs up, and she pretended the train was too crowded. These gypsies are very rich from doing this daily. They drive Mercedes’ Benz and live in expensive homes. 😳

In Makola Market in Ghana when there's human traffic you'll hear someone randomly shout "yi wonsa firi bag no mu" "remove your hand from the bag" just to draw people's attention to shift their bags Infront of them. I'm always thankful for that because there are times I'll be so lost in thought when walking into a congested area and I'll hear the shout and i come back to myself and start protecting my bag and pockets 😅

We were mugged on this same station in Rome years ago. Me & my sister and there were 4-5 of them surrounded us inside the train they pulled my sister’s bag as they pinned us. My sister is shouting but no one helped. No one. They all got down into the next station. Just one person asked if we were okay. Terrible experience!

The authorities don’t want tourist to know their country is populated with pick pockets. They won’t go, but they will never go back either if this happens to them, the tourists.
the police can't do anything because the thieves are released with a small fine after arrest. NYC has a mandatory prison sentence for repeat offenders and their pickpocketing dropped 95%.

The police usually do not intervene as many of the pickpockets are minors and some are pregnant. We'll continue to stay vigilant and help spread awareness. Commuters, be careful and stay safe!

Italy has become so horrible with pick pockets. I was almost a victim at the Venice water taxi station. 3 women stood behind me and tried to open my backpack. Good thing i felt it and called them out. They almost got everything! At this point, tourists need to help tourists.
I was pickpocket in Paris last 2022 inside a tiny elevator in the substation. My hubby warned me loudly to watch out for my purse and the guy panicked and pressed the button to open the door pulling my wallet, but it was attached to my purse! He’s not lucky to get it… I was traumatized by the incident for days. I bet he was too😂

Tip from someone who moved to Rome. If the train is super packed like in this case… if you can just wait for the next one, most times is like 1/5 minutes and it’s less crowded.
