    In our latest Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim video we delve what could be considered the Most EVIL Spell.
    Dragonbreaks: • The MOST Confusing Con...
    The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011.
    The game's main story revolves around the player character and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The videogame is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

    Is it ethical to soul trap a vampire?
    It is not certain what happens to a vampire's soul after death, but consensus opinion seems to point toward the soul going to Coldharbor for an eternity of torment at the hands of Molag Bal and his daedra. Is an eternity in the purgatory of the soul cairn preferable to an eternity of enslavement and systematic torture in Coldharbor?

    • @ryankunst668
      @ryankunst668 Před 5 lety +196

      Set up a place for vampires to come and let you soul trap them like "Hey, odds are you're gonna get killed eventually, and then you're gonna go to coldharbor and be tortured forever. You probably didn't even want to become a vampire in the first place but now you're stuck with it. You aren't able to cure yourself otherwise you would have by now, so just let me soul trap you and send you to the soul cairn, it's a significant improvement over your current deal." and just do that until Molag Bal sends someone to kill you.
      This does give me an idea for a vampire hunter who soul traps every vampire they kill in a twisted attempt to "save" them. Carry the Black Star and a weapon with soul trap.

      @dustyrusty75 Před 5 lety +138

      @@gamingdealer9514 not every vampire became a vampire willingly. Consider Lamae Beolfag, the first vampire in Tamriel. She was a Nedic priestess who was savagely raped to death by Molag Bal and then rose from the dead as the first vampire at her funeral, slaughtering everybody in attendance. She recognised that she was an abomination and prayed to Arkay to destroy her, but the Aedra abandoned her and so she resolved to spread vampirism across the continent as an insult to Arkay. Perhaps there are other unwilling vampires who recognise themselves to be abominations.
      Plus, the chance of being killed or dying accidentally approaches certainty over a long enough time frame. A once in 1000 years natural disaster that most mortals never experience would be something that a vampire would need to survive many times. Some may judge that the risk is not worthwhile.

      @valeriouscatastros8717 Před 5 lety +70

      +Ryan Kunst Vampires probably do not get treated as bad in Coldharbor like regular mortals who are turned into soul shriven. In ESO, you fight some vampiric legions in Coldharbor, but you have the option to get them to turn neutral or betray Molag Bal. Been a long time since I did the quest. I do not think vampires are treated as bad, plus considering the fact that most of them are way more powerful than regular mortals, and some are definitely on par with some lesser and greater daedra power rise. A vampire would be much harder for the Dremora, and Xivkyn to enslave in Coldharbor than a weak barkeeper who has never held a sword in his life, or never cast a basic candlelight spell. Molag Bal is all about being strong. Because if you are weak, you will get dominated or enslaved. So even weak Daedra can get punished easily by Bal. Vampires are not mortal, so a vampire that ends up in Coldharbor could be very powerful, especially if it is a daughter of Coldharbor or Vampire Lord like Harkon or Serana. If I was a vampire, an eternity in Coldharbor would not be that bad unless I was a "fledgling" or low rank vampire like a Mistwalker. If I am a Nightstalker, Master Vampire, or higher ranking vampire, I would probably be good as long as my power matches that of most of the generic lesser and greater Daedra.

      Tbf in skyrim, they are primarily found in extremely esoteric locations or purchased from very clearly illegal vendors, I think the rarity in skyrim is fine but they should definitely have included more obvious moral ambiguity around using them. • @ianjames1754
      @ianjames1754 Před měsícem

      Yeah you have a good point - pretty sure some are just levelled and will be a black gem depending on how high your level is, but seeing one in a Hagraven’s lair or a Vampire’s den or those mage ‘gangs’ that you sometimes encounter occupying military forts or fighting and killing bandits to enslave them for undead battle allies and manual labour (eg Ustengrav) or the woman who is a powerful necromancer using raised draugr for the same purpose; I forget her name; she’s trying to resurrect her dead husband and raises the Ancient Nordic lovers as Draugr Deathlords (I couldn’t help but feel a little bit sorry for her tbh) does make sense given that there’s such dark magics at work.
      Aside from that there are the geode veins in Blackreach which have a random chance to yield a black soul gem when mined, but I think that’s likely just a small oversight on the part of the developers forgetting to remove them as a possibility as they involve a dark ritual to actually create one, although I daresay that a mod could be made to do this if it bothered them enough :)

      Animals (ie white souls) only go to the Soul Cairn when the Ideal Masters are directly involved in the transfer of energy upon the use of the Soul Gem. This explains the limited number of white souls found in the Soul Cairn.
      The essence of what they are, or their consciousness or soul etc is absorbed back into Atherius and thus not sent to the Soul Cairn. This is why the use of white souls for enchanting is seen as acceptable.
      The transfer of power from a black soul into an enchanted object through soul trap and subsequent pact with the Ideal Masters that you have gathered and trapped a soul for them and now want great power gives them the right to claim the soul and the consciousness that goes with it while giving you the energy to create a powerful enchantment.
      Hope that kind of makes sense: basically white souls are natural and are a natural energy source on Nirn, while black soul energy comes from the Ideal Masters subverting the soul.

    Hey I'm not sure if I'm the only one who found this but I was playing Skyrim and slumming around riften I broke into mjol the lionesses house and found a letter hidden under the first table on the left addressed to mjol begging for help from the people of dawnstar I believe aerin hid it to keep mjoll from leaving also isn't it odd that a man as far as we can tell unarmored and armed only with a dagger managed to brave the frozen reaches and insane number of bandits in Skyrim as well as what could he possibly been doing that far from riften? I only come to the conclusion that he was already following her. And has anyone noticed he will move in to your house with no hesitation or invitation and just follow mjoll around. Does anyone else know anything creepy about aerin?

    Using soul trap on a daedra is harmless. You catch the power of their soul, but their animus is returned to oblivion whee they reform. I would recommend that course of action. There are also other forms of enchanting, notably, Varla stones can be used to replenish enchantments, and the magic of those is captured from starlight. Of course we've lost the means to produce them due to the barbarity of men, but the Altmer developed a similar process. Soul trapping also has many more uses than purely for consuming the soul for an enchantment, some in benefit of the soultrapped.

      They don't have a soul, per se, their animus is their equivalent.

    I’ve had a theory floating around in my head about trying to improve the Dead Thrall spell by using a trapped Black Soul in the corpse. It would be interesting to see how such a necromantic enchantment would play out if it succeeded. Would there be bleed-over of the soul into the reanimated body? Would the presence of a soul affect the intelligence of the thrall?

    Hold up, I was under the impression Soul Trap still released the soul of the target, but only after the soul gem was used as a magika source. It was the black soul gems made by the Ideal Masters who would capture the souls of the mortal men and mer in the Soul Cairn once the gem was used. Thereby denying an afterlife for the victims.

    I remember watching this video before dealing with the quest for Azura's Star. I really took your knowledge to heart and was planning to return the star to Azura. Along the way, I was traversing a cave full of bandits with Lydia. We got split up and by the time I found her, she was floating lifeless in the water. They had even indignified her in death by stripping her down to her undergarments. In a heated rage, I focused my intent on causing them as an equal a suffering. I drew my bow and one by one, they fell. But this was too peaceful. Had I enough black soul gems, I would have sent them all to the Soul Cairn without hesitation. Alas, this was not the case. So I stripped them of everything and used 'Revenant' to rip them briefly from the peace of their afterlife, awakening bare and defenseless, as they had left her. Then I dual-blasted them with flames till they surrendered themselves once more from this world, crumbling into ashes from which no one would remember their names.
    I dragged Lydia's corpse to a nearby bed and positioned her as comfortably as possible. To her possession, I left her a set of steel armor and a steel sword, for I would not send her to Sovngarde the way those savages took her. It was here that I made the decision to pursue the artifact and turn it into the Black Star, so I may divert as many of those scum from tge Holiest of Halls.
    I never cared much for Lydia's begrudging attitude in life, but she was a loyal housecarl and followed loyally. Rest in peace, Lydia.
    Until we next meet under Sovngarde skies 😢

    Great discussion topic Drew! As a christian, I find the whole concept of soul trapping abhorrent. However, we're talking about a game. I am an avid practitioner of all crafting skills, enchanting included. Enchanted jewelry along with brewing potions and poisons are my greatest source of wealth in game and my greatest source of power as well. I generally use white soul gems as I enchant all my weapons with fiery soul trap. I use black soul gems only for special items and for certain enemies. For example, I trap Harkon in a black soul gem and use it to craft a super powered dagger for Serana and consider it poetic justice. I never kill good folk. In fact, my characters are often philanthropists who adopt up to 6 children and send as many as 12 more children to school in Dragon's Keep. I also have a mod that allows me to give new clothing and 1,000 gold to the beggars in Skyrim. I only aim my bow at evil things so if they end up in my black gems so be it! How many mourners do you imagine there are for the souls of Mercer Frey, Malyn Varen, Harkon, Miraak, Movarth Piquine or Ancano? These are just off the top of my head. There are plenty more examples of black souls that I gladly trap and use to create my finest pieces reserved only for me and my most loyal followers. I carry white soul gems by the hundreds and pick up or purchase EVERY black soul gem I encounter. I have a very special affinity for soul trapping Thalmor and turning each arrogant one into a finely crafted master work of jewelry, armor or weaponry. However, I am no necromancer. I do not soul trap good people nor do I summon the unwilling. There are only three summoning spells that I ever use: Arniel's Shade, Ancient Assassin/Lucien Lachance and Durneviir. These are beings that have requested to be summoned. In fact, I summon Durneviir as often as is practical just to allow him time away from the soul cairn. If I join a side in the civil war I leave all my black soul gems at home. I wish no eternal harm on simple soldiers just doing their duty. And I would still like to get my hands on the necromancer that trapped poor St. Jiub! I go after the truly evil and twisted to fill my black gems. So, if this is illegal then I am a willing criminal and will continue to be thus regardless of what any others say or do! If this makes me a Black Wizard, then I am the Black Wizard of Righteous Vengence!
