Upgrading a Razor MX650 Freewheel to a stronger BMX freewheel. These were always breaking and I upgraded to a beefier one. Should work for an MX500 as well.
This got me started but no washers needed. Just hone out the center to fit and use original cup for original fitment. I used EnC sprocket and bored it out to fit new freewheel but you gave me the idea so I commend you for that.
I’ve updated my son’s mx350 with a 1000w motor and a 48v 10ah lithium battery it must have the older free wheel cos we’ve never had a problem but i now know what to do if we do great video 👍
Great vid! I’m going to try this on my sons rsf650. Not sure if it’s going to work though, his issue seems to be the threads between the freewheel and the wheel itself are stripped out.
I was lucky to find both my SX500, and my RSF650 had the “old style” freewheel. I bought 2 ACS freewheels, and will modify mine in your image; that is if I don’t cut too deep into the threads. Ugh.
I find the stock freewheel has a lot of play before engaging the teeth. I was hoping to find the aftermarket freewheel would fit into the stock sprocket hole, did you find any others that might fit without modifying the sprocket opening?

Are the stock free wheel really that bad? I've had a second had razor mod that was totaled put bigger motor on and had plenty of miles off road! And still going strong..
@@TimArmbruster I have a freewheel assembly from both an SX500 and an RSF650. Curiously, the RSF650 was the same as the “old style” freewheel assembly, featuring an actual freewheel, as opposed to the “new style,” single piece unit. Both freewheels were trash; and the RSF650 was fairly new. I bought two of these ACS units, and replicated your procedure; and all with a Dremel, a hammer and chisel. I did tongue touch the threads on the hubs, but each still readily accepts the new beasts. I shaved the inside of each rear sandwich ring as well; taking just enough material for the bigger ACS to fit. This eliminates the half washers; and puts the unit back together like the original design; with or without the guards. This allows, like yours, the ability to change out the rear cog if you wanted to if one wanted to acquire something stronger… I’m already thinking about belt drive. These bikes are too endearing to be logical.
@@reneasabbagh9287 no, between the nut and the freewheel. If the nut is holding the freewheel in place without a washer yoy could try without a washer but i felt better with the washers. Let me know how it goes.
@@TimArmbruster thanks so much for the fast reply i do still have the original wheel thankfully i put a replacement wheel that wad a hundred bucks and the kids broke it in 2 months .. i really don't want to spend 50 for the sprocket but the original wheel did last 5 plus years so if i gets couple more out of this im good ...plus im looking at some of your other upgrades they look like a lot of fun .im 51 and that bike pulls me around. Hi have you tried a fixed sprocket with lock ring to prevent loosening when using regenerative brakes? I know freewheel is safety for kids but fix gear better for advanced riders and upgraded razor
@@TimArmbruster im trying to get the freewheel sprocket off. I must have a different one because it has the 8 prong type freewheel sprocket and a big circlip behind it. Have you seen this before? Does it have to be removed to get the freewheel off. Im using a 25” breaker bar 24mm deep socket and the 8 prong sprocket tool but it hasn’t loosened. I kind of want to shelve the whole complicated assembly and try to find a wheel with a wheel conventional bolt on sprocket.

Any idea why the rear wheel gets stucked when going backwards?

No, both of the ones I used required modification. The sprocket is also aftermarket, so you may have different experience with the stock sprocket.
Sir one question could I add bicycle wheels on this
Has anybody figured out which freewheel fits in the sprocket without grinding?
Do you know if 16t would fit 10inch wheel? Looking to fit one to a Funbikes MXR500

I don’t have the tools to upgrade my son’s. Do you make and sell these? I’d buy one.
Hello Tim, thanks for all the informative videos. Today I got the MX650 for my lil one. I want to upgrade the handlebars. is it an easy swap ?
Hello, yes, handlebars is an easy swap.

They usually give out, yes. But, like you, I have had some stock ones that never failed. I wouldn't replace until it fails.

Our new one lasted about 5 rides
Was the shimano freewheel quieter than the ACS?
Yeah it was. Although to be honest, when driving you don't really notice the freewheel noise. I thought it would bother me but it doesn't.
could you have cut off the free wheel with a cut off wheel on your Dremel instead?
Yes but you might cut the threads on the hub which would be bad
Hi I’m going to attempt to do the upgrade, what diamond tip did you use in the dremel? Thanks so much for the video
