  • On the 21st of February 2024, a new 5th-gen fighter took to the skies. The Turkish Aerospace Industries TF Kaan is Turkey’s first domestically built modern fighter, and as we shall see, it marks the beginning of an ambitious program to refit Turkey's military with nationally produced equipment. So, what is the TF Kaan, and what is it likely to be capable of?

So besides the airframe, the AESA radar, the computer and software and all the ammunition for various air to air and air to land missions, the engines will also be localy made, native to Turkiye. So whether anti Turks hate or love it, whether people hate or love Turks, that is that, an other step towards total defense independence.

Heres something you may find interesting. :)
The name of my country has nothing to do with the interesting and delicious bird 'turkey'......
.....but the name of the bird does have a connection with the name of my country, let me explain. :)
In the past 40 years 37 countries have changed their name.
Obviously one can not change the name of an apple or an orange etc in other languages,
but country names are like peoples' individual names, so if you're named John we don't call you Karen. :)
Name of my country has always been Türkiye, it's been known as such since around the 1200's.
The name it self has a suffix, '-iye', that is Turk-iye, where the -iye suffix means 'land of/belonging to',
just like the Latin suffix of '-ia', which exists in such country names like
      Austr-ia, Austral-ia, Indones-ia etc.
Basically, the use of '-iye/-ia' is the same as the the use of '-land' suffix in country names like
Ire(Eire)-land, Po(le)-land, Eng(Anglo)-land and so on and so on.
Many would remember the country Czechoslovak-ia which changed it's name to Czech Republic and a few years ago changed that to Czechia (that is Czech-ia).
The Latin suffix -ia probably originates from Turkish -iye as Turkish been over 10,000 years is much older than Latin which is around 1300 years old.
Spelled in different languages in different ways to phonetically resemble (to sound like) 'Türkiye'
      we got various spellings like;
      Turq-uía (in Spanish),
      Turch-ia (in Italian),
      Turq-uie (in French)
      Turk-ei (in German)
      Turk-ey (in English)
Mind you this was way before the animal we currently know as turkey was found by the europeans when they explored the north americas. The bird was first sent to europe from north americas in the year 1519, so up until that point there was no bird named turkey....
...they came across the bird and thought it was a specie of the fowl/chicken they had been buying from the country of Turkiye at the time, so they named the bird 'Turkey Fowl' to define 'Turkish Chicken'...
....just like how a dog breed is known as German Shepherd (because it's from Germany), American Bulldog, British Terrier, Greek Harehound etc etc.
In time you don't get to call the harehound simply as Greek or you don't call the terrier Britirsh, or shepherd as simply German,
but in time the Turkish Fowl started to be called just 'Turkey' and later 'turkey', and this went on for hundreds of years.
Now in modern times, this caused confusion, especially when we have people across the world unable to point to their own country on an atlas.
Basically we didn't change the name of our country, we changed the mistake made in the English language. : )
So, there's some tid bit information for you to have a great day, if you read upto this point you have a great night too, ohh just have a wonderfull life. : )
      Best wishes. ;)

Turkey is actually very experienced in this regard because many of the F-16s produced worldwide were manufactured in Turkey by Turkish engineers. In fact, some of the best-performing F-16s in the world were produced in Turkey, with 60% of their components made in the USA and 40% in Turkey. Important parts of the F-35 were also produced in Turkey by Turkish engineers. When Turkey was excluded from the F-35 project, it faced serious difficulties due to this. It's also worth noting that nearly 96% of the components in currently flying aircraft worldwide are produced by Turkish companies. Turkey had everything ready to produce its own aircraft, including state-of-the-art technology, and finally, it succeeded. With 17,000 engineers, a significant portion of whom had previously worked and gained experience in the USA and the UK, Turkey was able to bring back these experienced aircraft engineers to work on this aircraft for their country. An aircraft capable of performing the tasks of both the F-35 and the F-22, meeting NATO standards, was designed and built. Although the aircraft is technically a 5th generation aircraft in terms of avionic systems, its engines are based on the F-16 engine, so we can partly refer to it as a 4.75th generation. However, since Turkey will produce its own 5th generation engines, it will be fully considered a 5th generation aircraft by 2030.

The first F-16 production in Turkey started in 1987. At the time, it was much cheaper to buy from the US. However, even though it cost more, Turkey built its own factory to learn aircraft production technology. Today, thanks to this know-how and its trained engineers, it can produce F-35 parts and its own design Kaan.

US have a very big army thats bigger than any army of the world. So when they produce something they have to seek the interests of all the military branches. They have to consider their allies doctrines, preferences and militaries so the project tangles so far so much that it takes years of hardworking to achieve anything.

@@mehmetcagrdogan2753 That's wishful thinking. I'd take all these projects from Turkey, Russia, South Korea and India claiming to deliver 5th gen fighters with a big bag of salt. It reminds me far more of awe around Uber. Yeah, it's kind of a taxi that does taxi job. There is an evident reason though, why they operate cheaply and they lack certain fundamental constructs. Same with Bayraktar vs MQ Reaper. Just because you made something that looks like a 5th gen fighter and has some of it's properties, doesn't mean it is an actual complete 5th gen system and this is what counts. Stealth capabilities are cherry on top: what about radar, electronic warfare, weapon systems, cooperation with AWACS, ground troops, mission control, battlefield awareness, own defense mechanisms. Gripen is one of the best examples. Plane alone is not as impressive as the complete system, which in turn is a master piece. Shortly - it's not just bureaucracy that makes US toys cost so much money. it's beacuse when you buy one... sorry, when you buy 20 of them, you are buying far more than just planes, which are rather fragile on their own.

Let me give you some little information. They have also successfully started the engine they call TF6000. This engine is the low power version of the one to be built for KAAN. They will use this engine in the unmanned warplane and delta wing plane (I forgot their names) that they build. They also mounted the AESA radars they produced on UCAVs, ships, air defense systems and Block 30 F16s and started testing them. They bought a plane from the USA. They will also start testing the radar and sensors to be installed on KAAN.

The unmanned warplane is called 'Kizilelma', which literally means 'red apple'. In the history of the ancient Turks, 'Kizilelma' was the target that must be obtained by means of diligent effort, with unbroken determination and at any cost! As for the delta winged UAV, it is called 'Anka-3'. By the end of this year or in early 2025, the engine 'TF6000' will be powering both UAVs. So, it will mean that both UAVs will be 100 percent indigenous vehicles.

Furthermore Turkish engineers used state of the art machines and systems to develop and produce the parts for the jet which Turkey can't build. So actually Turkey relies heavily on Western Tech to enable such projects in the future. For example it is just now building a wind tunnel in Turkey with Pakistani engineers. Even Pakistan and India and Iran have several wind tunnels but can't build a 5th Generation on their own. Hell they can't even build a 4th Generation fighter although Iran and India managed to have designed a fully indigenous fighter jet. Even China has just accomplished to build its own jet engines not even 5 years ago although they have thousand times more resources and man power than Turkey. I suspect Turks just got a huge technology transfer from the West for several reasons

I congratulate those who contributed. I agree with what is said in the video. This is a difficult job, especially the engine issue, but if I have to add to the video, the worst case scenario is that an engine can be produced jointly with Ukraine. The rights belong to Turkey and Ukraine. In my opinion, the strongest option is for Tei to make a local Turkish engine or to have a joint engine with Ukraine. The last thing I want to mention is that since this aircraft will be exported, money will not be a problem. Currently, Turkey's economy is bad, but it is expected to recover significantly after 2025 and 2026 and 2027. I was surprised that a foreign channel made such a video. The information on all the channels I watched was incorrect and insufficient. Finally, I don't think there will be any problems with almost anything except the engine. Great video. A great summary and your prior research shows. Turkiye has a lot of experience building modern jets which stems from the 1980s production of the F16, production over 1100 components for the F35, production of the Hurkus, production of the Hurjet, and much more like drones (including stealth ones). The point of the project is to no longer be held hostage by the USA. USA sanctions in the 1970’s were the catalyst for the Turkish defense industry’s creation.

If a western ally wants the fighter with euro jet engine, french aesa radar and weaponry they will be able to acquire it with that configuration. I believe the Turkish configuration will be available only for very close (trustworthy) allies. At some point the same might happen also for the Asian market.

TAI was a partner in F-35 programme, making fuselage parts therefore gained a limited but valuable experience in 5th gen modern fighters. But there is a long way to go. Good info. Turkish Aviation (TUSAŞ) said second prototype has a different nose structure and more lighter than first. Actually 7 other prototype planned. TUSAŞ need to accelerate testing and certifications process with lot of flights. And first 40 planes comes with GE engines. You must consider this planes as a fifth minus (5-) gen. Unlike KAI's KF-21 Boramae (4+ gen.) KAAN has a completely stealth design. Turkey plan to adopt domestic engine after fist 40. And domestic engine development are slow. Maybe export KAAN's and some other batcs also have a GE engine. Turkish defence and aerospace industries has no export version concept like some other countries. Of course they keep something themself. But, special / tailor made solutions for every export customer policy is better then a crippled export versions. And they are much more open to the industrial cooperations. Pakistan, Azerbaycan, Malaysia, Indonesia, some Arab countries already interested. With a NATO standart open arcitecture, probably we can see KAAN with many different subsystems in the some European countries also. The last note, stealth coating development is going very well...
