I've carried a Wedge since they came out, and picked up an Olight and returned it.
My biggest complaint about the Wedge is the lack of a low-power mode. I need 5 lumens more often than I need 1000, probably about as often as I need the 300. This is my only major gripe. It could be a bit smaller, but that would just be a nice to have.
The Olight is terrible; made for EDC pocket dump photos and nerds to try and score instagram points. Let me count the ways:
    - Single, multi-mode switches are just atrocious for serious use. You never get the amount of light you want. The Wedge nails the switching (despite the no low mode), as does SureFire with the system they introduced on the LX and EDC series (press for light, press hard for more light, twist for constant on).
    - Propritary magnetic charger? Brings zero benefits while always making sure that anyone who travels or wants a backup is stuck having to buy an extra or two. Oh, it is more durable you say? Well, Samsung and Apple's current phones are all IP68 rated (6m underwater depth for 30 minutes), and they all have open Lightening and USB-C ports right on the bottom.
    - With the exception of a handful of people, who the hell needs a green laser pointer on them at all times? Total gimmick for all but 3% of potential buyers.
I do feel like the Olight is better executed (both are made by our enemies in China). If I were on the design team? Ditch the stupid magnet for USB-C which, as of the next iPhone, is the definitive charging standard for the next decade. Use the space for a deep carry pocket clip. Ditch the dumb laser, make the rotary switch your output selection with 3 modes (5/300/1000 lumens). Hold for momentary. Tap for constant-on. Double tap for max brightness constant on. Hide the novelty flashing modes and other associated BS the marketing team wants to offer as "features" behind triple taps that everyone can use once, then promptly ignore.
In the end, the Streamlight isn't perfect, but it is far far closer to the ideal EDC light than the Olight. I'm really hoping Wedge II nails it.

Greg. I have carried the Olight for 2 months now. And agree totally with what you are saying. I use the laser pointer many times a day as a Maintenance contractor. However I am the niche they are marketing too. Besides from the timer. Which actually I use a lot. (Double tap and hold with the light on until it flashes.) The other features need looking over and definitely USB C. Nightmare remembering that cable all the time. Cheers.

Totally agree with all your points. Don’t know why flashlight makers can’t get these simple ui issues figured out. In general streamlight doesn’t seem to value those low lumen modes. I also wish they would take there “dualie” concept into some different form factors. Personally I would love a small edc light with throw out the front and flood at 90deg, and a magnetic tail.

@@ks-hg5vo I’ve seen those and never bought one. What I really like is the dualie concept where the flood points at the ground as you hold it, and you have access to the spot to look further ahead. If you’ve never used one, I highly recommend them. The edc05 has the full length leds more suited to a task light, but you couldn’t easily hold it while walking pointed at the ground.

  • @OtherThanIntendedPurpose

I not only carry flashlights EDC every time I leave my cave, but I use lights often here at the house, because I spent most of my time with the lights off and the black out curtains up. the one real difference in my use is that the Olight has a moonlight mode. I tend to use either the moonlight mode, or lowest mode setting on my lights 80% of the time. I don't need to "light up the night" with 300+ lumens very often. my Arkfeld does not have the laser, it has the UV light, which I have found kind of handy on occasion. my grandson like to do marble hunts, and a lot of the marbles are UV reactive, and the UV on the Arkfeld is a lot brighter than the one he has. I would like to see the wedge up close sometime, but I don't see myself spending that much money on a light with no lower settings.

I still prefer the rounded one as the battery cell (usually Li-ion 18650) is easy to replace. It's true that you can custom build the battery to fit any shape, but it'll be damn hard to find a replacement battery in the same form factor.

I have the Wedge, but I’m interested in the Arkfeld for 2 reasons. First, the wedge lacks a low output mode. Second, I am left handed and the Wedge is clearly designed to be used in the right hand. I also like the fact that the Arkfeld can tail stand and has the magnetic clip.

the newer Arkfeld UV has a deep-carry clip, and I find a 365nm UV light more useful than yet another laser.

That Arkfeld has a strobe light output from a triple click, as well as a lockout mode to prevent accidental activation.

I'm a sucker for the simplicity of the wedge which I find to be a perfect work light! 300 lumens is more than enough light to inspect up close or near surrounding and if you need a jolt of turbo light it's there too! USB-C is a plus! I love this thing and imo will be hard to beat!

for now I have settled with the olight but there are some other contenders for my use case what I wanted was easy to use (literally off and on), magnetic and pocketable penlight or AA size, and then lastly rechargable, for now I'll have to observe how it performs as theres narry much choices in my country, LEDLenser, Fenix, Olight (kinda), Nitecore are the choices but mainly its LEDLenser, Fenix and Nitecore
my issue that there's nary magnetic pocket lights so... it can't even get through to my 3rd parameter, as for rechargeable I just want something either built in or will accept Eneloops without going "low power output" since eneloops are actually not up to AA "spec"

  • @buzzmeistermeister280

Ive always lived by “if you get more features for the same price, then you’re getting less in the long run”
To offer more features for the same price, those features most likely come at the cost of lower quality.

Other than round is good but should be made into a standard size system. That way we can still replace the battery. Most lithium only have a life of 2 to 5 years. In travel I would want to be able to replafe it with something universal.

This has become my pet hate. It was ok with the nitecore tube at less than 10 quid but a 70 quid disposable flashlight when the battery gives out is poor show in this day and age. The brand that brings out a lipo or similar with a slide out battery for replacement will get me first in the que. Untill then I'll stick with my ti lan.

I love the look and form factor of the wedge but the lake of a useful low powered output make it totaly useless for me as an edc light. The olight would be fine except the stupid magnetic charger. This also makes it worthless as a true edc light if i cant charge it on the go without carrying another charging cord. The war is over usb C won. Having any other charging forbat is like having a betamax in the 80s.
