As a 16 year old, I watched it on the B&W tv in Hyderabad. Cannot forget the delirious feeling of victory. After Viv got out, I grabbed a calculator and was checking the runrate after every over. And I think never once did it reach the asking rate from then point onwards. We could smell victory and were pretty damn sure about it, as were the fans in the stadium. After the victory, we jumped and screamed our hearts out that night and just couldn't sleep that night!
We repeated the feat 2 years later in Australia by winning the Benson and Hedges cup which was a mini world cup. And the same year beat Pak in Sharjah finals by about 30 odd runs, this after being bowled out for 125! Imran took a magnificent 6 for in that innings. But our boys still won, cementing our status as world numero uno!!

but a movie made today on an event that occurred in 1983 cannot do justice to the good old times of those years...look at how even Lords had such a simple side to it...just see how jazzed up things are today...the movie also looks too jazzed up to impress the likes of those who never burnt midnight oil but stayed awake to the stop-start stop-start telecast of the final match... doordarshan even showed 2 movies to keep people awake that day - i think it was pather panchali and godfather :-) ... in fact this video is better than any movie made on that event...

One England journalist criticised the Indian team so much, he wrote in his column, “ Teams like India should not be allowed to participate in the World Cup, if India wins the World Cup I will eat my words.” To his bad luck , India won the World Cup. But he kept his promise. He cut the piece of paper from the newspaper and swallowed it with a glass of wine. 100% true.

This world cup we won largely due to great Kapil and Mohinder Amarnath. Great Amarnath is one of the most underrated player in history and also the victim of politics. In 1982-83 season, he played so magnificently that he scored 1182 runs in just 11 test matches played against strongest opposition i.e West Indies and Pakistan. He single handedly mastered Holding, Marshall, Garner, Roberts, Imran and Sarfaraz, This was the time when Imran was at his peak and west indies had most lethal bowlers in the history. During this season even greats like Gavaskar could not succeed. He scored 3 centuries against Pakistan and 2 against west indies in this season. Likes of Imran, Gavaskar declared him the best batsman in the world. And even west indian players like Holding, Marshall, Richards praised his batsmanship and courage.

There were 2 major turning points in Indian cricket. The first one was in 1983, when India won world cup. It brought a new passion in India and that is what makes 1.4 billion people hold their breaths on every ball an Indian batsman faces. The second turning point came when Dhoni became Indian captain. He changed Indian cricket by bringing in consistency. Earlier, India had the strongest team, with players like Sachin, Sehwag, Dravid, Ganguly but the Indian team was not mentally strong which resulted in loss in crucial matches. However India frequently won many matches so there is no doubt the team was excellent. But the coming of Dhoni brought a strong mindset. this is why in 2007 India were kicked out in group stages and then Dhoni was made captain as Dravid stepped down and next world cup 2011 India won with a spectacular finish. This is what makes Kapil Dev and M.S Dhoni the best captains India has ever had.

What a great moment for Indian cricket. Sir Viv Richards's catch by Kapil Dev changed the match completely in India's favor. That was a very well-judged and amazing catch by Kapil Dev. It was a very difficult catch to hold on to while running in an awkward direction. Viv Richards used to be a classic power hitter in those days. All bowlers used to be scared of his batting prodigy. He could have single-handedly turned the match if he was still there. Madan Lal kept his nerve cool and lured Richards to hit him despite being thrashed by Richards for three boundaries earlier. The teamwork went excellent for India. All players gave the very best they could. What a great game of Cricket. I was in elementary school in 1983 and so didn't get the opportunity to watch live on TV in those days. From 1985 onwards, I began to understand and start playing cricket. Gavaskar used to be my favorite player in those days.

Those born in 1950s-1970s will carry the memory of that Kapil catch off Richards all the way to their graves. Same way as our generation will always remember that Dhoni Six to clinch 2011 WC or Sreesanth catch that won us 2007 T20 WC or maybe that Karthik 6 in Nidahas Final. If I am on my death bed or suffer Alzheimer, just show me these moments & I will go away happily with a smile

That was a magical journey. Having not won against any Test team in the previous 2 world cups, India went all the way to the final and won!. We were just glad and super happy when we reached the quarters. The headline on the sports page of all newspapers was India reach Quarter-final. Then Semi-final. And when we reached the final, it became the front page headline. And after the final, well... 50% of every newspaper was filled with the Cup news!.

    Faith moves mountains.

    अब यहां से कपिल देव ने जीतने की ठानी - leading & attacking from the front.
An epitome of a perfect LEADER.

I was in first year of BE(elect &communications) there was no live matches on television we used to be glued to radio commentary. I was keenly following after kapil dev routed Zimbabwe with 175 (approximately) we never expected a win final but seeing all players contributing to the game we began to be hopeful for prudential worldcup We can never forget those pioneer team.that was the reward for getting a good selection for winning.
