- I Carved a Horse Head out of 11 gallons of epoxy resin and a mixed species of wood. This is one of my favorite carvings to date and took over 5 weeks to completion. Follow along and watch as I sculpt and carve this giant block of epoxy resin and wood into the horse. I used a variety of power tools and woodworking tools in order to accomplish this.

How can anyone not like your videos!
The competitors.
The 4x4 was a space filler to cut down on the amount of epoxy needed. I would have thought it was there to keep everything upright and prevent shifting but you built that box really well
Exactly, plus it was going to be cut off anyway and that would have been a waste of resin
BOTH winners!
4x4 did not want to feel left out by all the fancy woods.
I love that the wood is in the direction of the face, very well done. Gives the feeling as if the horse is in motion somehow, if that makes sense
Thanks Simeon. I think I will be doing a couple more in this way.
@@BMSculptures yes I like this way. The wooden pillars rising up into the epoxy is a beautiful look but having the grain of the wood more prominent in the face of the animal is visually interesting.
U would love the wood
Absolutely it does! Itâs using leasing lines to indicate motion. Very common in photography and animation in fact
@@BeanWolfe Thank you! very interesting :)
Who knew a bubble blaster could be so cute! And the sculpture was pretty good too!
haha Thanks Jude!
That finish you put on the horse head just gives it that special touch. When the light hit it in the right places it just makes it more amazing looking
Glad you like it!
Absolutely incredible. Well done dude!
Thanks Jon!
yes
nice
Itâs insane how precise and lifelike you shape a hunk of wood and epoxy with mainly just a chainsaw. I kept thinking you were going to cut too deep and ruin the piece but you never fail to amaze. Beautiful work and artistry!
I always think I'm going to cut too deep too đ©. I use the templates and stick outside those lines and go from there.
The gloss finish elevates the work, almost looks like glass
Glad you like it!
Youâve got some absolutely amazing talent. Your work on the sculptures never fails to amaze me
Wow, incredible! You are an artist!
Thank you Veradona!
top
Dude, the sculpture looks amazing as always and the glossy touch just elevated it even more!! I canât wait for the next one. Great job to little bubble killer on his fine work, not a bubble in sight, he should get a raise haha.
Thanks Jade. I keep going back and forth on the glossy look. I love certain aspects but dont like others. I think it will be a sculpture by sculpture basis. The bubble blaster will get another topper of milk for his efforts đ
Dude this is incredible work love watching the process
Glad you enjoy it!
Incredible sculpture Blake! I am always amazed at how early into the sculpt you seem to have a visual of where the final product is located.
One note though, you may not want to pour epoxy in your home, especially with a small kid in the house. One of the primary reactants in curing epoxy resin is the plastic Bisphenol-A (BPA). This is a plastic that aerosolizes in epoxy fumes and builds up in your body over time. Because BPA dissolves into fat cells, it accumulates in your body over the course of your life and does not get excreted, and can have some pretty nasty cumulative health impacts, ranging from infertility and PCOS to potentially even breast cancer. While one epoxy pour isn't going to kill anyone, its best to pour in a ventilated space or with a respirator. While BPA itself is scent-free, a good indicator of air quality is smell: if you can smell it in the room, it is probably best not to spend too much time there.
Because of this, I personally would not cure large blocks of epoxy in my home, although this is not to say that you must not as well! Everyone of course can make their own decisions on personal safety, and this comment is simply meant to provide background in order to make an educated decision.
If anyone is interested in reading further into this, there is a great 2015 paper called "Health Risk of Exposure to Bisphenol A (BPA)" by Konieczna et. al. where I got most of my information on BPA. Just a note that you will find a lot of conflicting information about BPA out there, and some epoxies claiming to be BPA free. Investigate that deeply, as I have seen at least one manufacturer claiming to be BPA free because all the BPA (the primary ingredient in one of the two parts) is "fully reacted" in the curing reaction, meaning that the final product does not contain any. This ignores volatilization during the curing reaction, during which inhalation exposure is a risk.
Thank you for the detailed information. I did not know this to be honest. I Luckily I just got a large refrigerator chest outside in the shop where I plan to do most of my future pours.
@@BMSculptures Thanks for the reply and glad to hear that! I would definitely do your own research as well over just trusting what some random guy on the internet says -- sadly this information is not well discussed outside of research papers, and I know those can be difficult to understand without a background in environmental engineering/occupational health.
This sadly also is not the most researched of chemicals, so I could not find any papers specifically talking about inhalation of epoxy fumes for a hobbyist/small-scale professional, but from what I understand, after cured, the health risk from epoxy lowers significantly, but the curing process releases BPA in medically significant doses for professionals who work with epoxy paints and similar products. It is in a whole load of "foodsafe" products as well though, like take-out containers and the linings of aluminum cans, so it is not really possible to cut out all exposure. Some industries (including consumer grade epoxy resin manufacturers) have begun transitioning away from BPA as bad press starts to leak, but it looks like the replacements, called BPF and BPS are essentially the same thing and equally unsafe but entirely unregulated and unresearched. Best practice is most likely to try to limit exposure to curing epoxy, and to do so either outside, in an area with good ventilation (i. e., a shop with exterior-facing vents and fans), or in a space with a ventilation system not connected to where people are living (a shop in a separate building to where people often sleep and eat)
Good point ! Here in Europe it's been over a decade that food items are declared bpa free, (2011), every parent knows. Over in the US things often are delayed in that regard
I remember seeing you on Making It. And the wonderful tire tread sculpture. And you continue to make beautiful art. Thank you for sharing your craft with all of us. And the employee is an adorable addition.
Amazing such a beautiful sculpture
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the gloss finish!!! Great job the end result was incredibly GORGEOUS!!! As always of course, once again thank-you for sharing your time and incredible talent with us!
I love the carving videos. The way you can take a cube and turn it into a recognizable form is just amazing to me. But then again, I'm a guy that considers cutting my grass in straight parallel lines to be an artistic victory. Great stuff. Thanks for sharing!
Hey don't undervalue a straight parallel grass cut. Those are a thing to treasure!
Blake! Thank you again. As usually together with my daughter, almost breathless we watched you work. The process and the result are like magic. And always some small improvements. Waiting for another piece of art from your workshop.
Thank you so much and I am so glad you get to spend time with your daughter watching my videos. That is really rewarding for me.
@@BMSculptures It is a pleasure for us! Right now we in Turkey on holiday :)
Absolutely incredible! Itâs looks AMAZING!!! đđŒ
Your attention to details is out of this world. The horse head turned out gorgeous.
Iâm always so astounded by the level of detail you can get with a chainsaw. Beautiful piece!
Chainsaw is extremely fun to work with. On the smaller ones you can get quite detailed.
Great projects đ
Thanks!
Iâm glad you got the Jaw horse!
YES! Such a game changer. Thanks for the rec!
How you know what wood should go where, knowing how it will look at the end, before you even start the project, is amazing to me. Bravo on such another amazing piece.
Lots of preparation and visualizing has to happen at the very beginning stages!
The end result is incredible as always but I really feel there should've been some form of a mane sticking up from the neck bit to add a sense of motion to the piece.
I love that you keep the details of your sculptures to a minimum. It tells us exactly what it is without taking away from the whole thing. Just found your channel fairly recently with the bear statue (that thing is amazing). and seeing the whale after that, i was hooked!!
p.s. don't ask why i'm only subscribing now đŹ
Another reason I like minimal is because I want the wood& epoxy to really shine. If I did really detailed work, all those small curves would reflect and not show the inside of the sculpture. Thanks for noticing, and Im slightly irritated it took you so long to subscribe đ©
@@BMSculptures absolutely!! Really REALLY impressive work, bro. Great job.
You do beautiful work. Iâm so glad you have a channel and share with us. Inspiring
Wow that is gorgeous, love all the colours
Have you ever considered doing a water test before you pour the apoxy into the mold? Just a thought if the water leaks its less expensive to sort and to clean up? And You can catch all leaks before hand đ€
The dimension in the neck is off the charts great! Love it.
That glossy look is so sick! Love it!
Spectacular piece. I could no more fly to the moon with lead wings than to create something that beautiful. Thank you for your videos. You have a gift.
Wow that blew me away đ absolutely amazing. You can't get better than that.
Thank you so much đ
Another incredible piece! I get so excited when you release new videos and get to see the whole process.
Thanks Stefano!
Another absolutely beautiful masterpiece. Love multiple wood species. â„ïž

Absolutley stunning sculpture !!!!! đČ
Beautiful and well done. Looks like a dream job in many ways.
I canât believe Iâve only just found you đ€·đ»ââïž I can nearly feel your passion all the way over here in Australia đ«Ą love your work, especially your American eagle sculpture, that video I said âthis manâs a geniusâ within the first 45 seconds when you turned that axe into a beak đđŒ wow just wow, itâs the simple things I can respect and to you sir, much respect đ«Ąđ
First time watching a project and freaking awesome! Great work!
I'll keep saying it! You're a true artist, unbelievable!
Love the shiny finish this time!! Great work as always!
Thank you!!! I still go back and forth on future sculptures glossy vs satin!

Blake fantastic work again!!! stunning result!
Thanks so much!
Just AWESOME! I am in awe of your talent!!! I would be happy with the wood after initial application of epoxy :) :) Thank-you again for sharing your creations with us and I just LOVE seeing your son. He is beautiful and so is your interaction with himhim
I am in awe as I keep watching! True talent!
Thank you Sherry!
Beautiful piece
It's so fulfilling creating something from start to finish
what I love about these more than anything is the fact that the framing of the wood totally matches the energy of the animal you're doing. Like these woods you picked, the way you laid them out, the pattern, it screams "horse" if that makes any sense
I try and pick wood exactly as you mentioned. My next project I am doing a black Rhino out of a massive hunk of Black Walnut. Hopefully that gives the same vibes!
@@BMSculptures cant wait?

Thank you! đ
Mind Blowing art work.
I am not always amazed just by the quality, creativity, and skill you show but by how fast you get these videos out! Do you ever do stuff with the offcuts? Thanks for sharing the process, always fascinating!
I actually plan on possibly throwing all the offcuts in a mold, pouring epoxy over it and doing a sculpture out of that.... could be interesting
The whole thing glossy looks great. You have talent, keep up the good work.
