I think that's pretty much how it worked before the introduction of the secret ballot.
On the other hand (in the UK at least) candidates can't give potential voters as much as a Quality Street because that might be bribery (even though it's practically impossible for a candidate to find out whether the person they have "bribed" actually voted for them.)

I started watching with the expectation the influencer would be cringey and wrong about everything - however, he was more often right than wrong. "You have to leave your house to vote?! Only old people would do that" alas, so true! 😂

Since it is the local London Mayor and local elections today, fun fact (I wonder if he was inspiration for this), but 3 years ago in 2021, Nico Omilana who is a CZcamsr actually got 5th place (after the 4 main parties). A true, true underdog cause he's not an actual politican but to become first out of all the other independants and small serious parties, I was actually proud and had fun casting my vote for him.😆

This is depressingly accurate...
My favorite lines are the "What the fuck's a pencil?" and the idea that only the elderly will leave their homes to vote and then "I don't poll well with the over 35s" (implying that is the starting point of being elderly is 35!).
This may be how we ended up with a couple of our congressional reps in the US.
It's actually much easier because of the spoiler effect. They've had ranked-choice voting for ages in Ireland.
