How to Make Pottery Bowls - From Start to Finish

- In this week's video I'm making a deep bowl from beginning to end. I'll begin with lumps of soft clay and I'll take you right through to the end, through glazing, firing and the final bit of sanding the base undergoes. Whenever I see a big discrepancy between views and likes, i don't understand it at all. This video had been viewed 12,882 times by the time i saw it and couldn't help but comment, but it was only deemed good enough to receive a simple thumbs up 592 times. Whenever i see a video where i've learned something new it deserves a thumbs up. Whenever i've seen a video that entertained me, i give it a thumbs up. Whenever i've seen a video that didn't help me with my search, but at least the quality was good, the effort that the creator made is worth a thumbs up to me. 8:53 that would be a cool moonjar-esque vessel if you attached 2 near identical bowls together and trimmed out the base of one of them as the opening. The foot that you trim would be an interesting shape for a rim

I notice that a crazed appearance is part of the finished product. You've probably flogged the question of food safety dozens of times in other videos, but I'm curious about your POV on crackle/crazed ware.

Indeed they are! That was such fun to shoot, it felt like being in an 8 hour Tom Scott video, from the time he arrived until the time he left.
Lovely video (as usual)! I do have one question about the glazing process. How come you let an extra-thick layer of glaze pool in the bottom of the bowl? Looking at the footage of the finished products, it seems to disrupt the pattern of the glaze, and I'm wondering what purpose this serves. Thank you!
The method of dipping the bowl in the glaze is not in one movement, but for a brief moment, half is outside. Wouldn't that affect the result? I'm doing ceramics for one month, so I know almost nothing about glazing yet.

Great video. Wow, 1 lb of clay to make these pots. I usually end up using more clay to make a smaller pot. I am sure my walls are thicker. Maybe if I make several hundred pots I will be only using 1 lb. I do have a question on your stilts. Are those made of clay? Did you make them yourself? Also the shelves seem really thin compared to mine. What are those made of?
why do you pack the upmost layer of bowls to be rightside up while the rest is facing downwards? It feels like you can get a lot more bowls in when they are all stacked the same direction.

The goodest! He’s really settling in and becoming so easy to look after. Calmer, quieter, sleeps for longer. Currently hates plastic bags blowing in the wind and humans wearing big coats.
@@floriangadsby for the the pup (if possible), I would recommend a moose horn as a chew toy. It doesn't break and lasts years, when my pup was still alive she had one that she loved.

Your dog is adorable. 🐕 I admire the methods you use , listening, watching in it's complexities that involve throwing the pots from raw clay to where they slowly develop their own character as each pot is unique in itself. It takes passion and patience through the many phases with the result being simply and visually so appealing.⚱️🏺⚱️

Haha! That could have been an easy segue to make. Unfortunately, for myself perhaps more than anyone, I’ve avoided most sponsorships so far. CZcams isn’t my primary form of income, selling pots still is, plus I can’t stand how in video ads interrupt the flow of these making films. I hope, without them, they’ll have a better longevity but who knows! Thanks for watching! That alone puts a few pennies in my pocket without the need of any sponsorships.
What wheel do you find works the best
It’s quite a subjective topic really! Some wheels are better for some people and lots of personal preference comes into play. I personally like using the ROHDE HMT 500, but equally Shimpo and Brent are good options
Florian, I notice that some of the pots are already glazed? Why would someone want to glaze fire a pot again?
How can I order some?
Did anyone else have a heart attack when the bowl went off center while he was trimming the inside? Without fail, my pots are ALWAYS damaged when that happens to me

The dried glaze can become air born when you clean it with your fingers and the knive. Don't you wear a mask to protect yourself?

I do not like how small the base is on your bowls, looks so disproportionate. also makes it easier to tip over. with any amount of weight in it.
