  • World long drive champ and now golf teacher of amateurs and tour pros alike, Monte Scheinblum has developed some very different ideas about how the golf swing should be taught.
    I had a detailed Conversation with Monte and here we talk about his controversial ideas about golf swing lag and it's role (if any) in a proper golf swing. Also covered are proper sequence in the swing, early extension and a lot more.

    Peter Kostis from CBS showed us time after time that Freddie Couples always moved his hips 1/2 to 1 inches forward on the start of the downswing (see it in the slow motion video) which then made me spinout the hips on my downswing - disaster. Thank you for clearing this up about what I should be doing.

    When a golfer tries to "hold lag", muscles in the fore arms are keyed in the opposite direction of the hit, which then has to be overcome in order to make them move in the direction of the hit. Conversely, if a golfer resists lag, muscles are automatically keyed to release in the direction of the hit. Note that "resist" is not the same as "prevent". Resistance to lag is like having spring loaded wrists. Ultimately, the amount of lag is less important than when it is released.
    Good video. If you get loaded properly on the up swing, hips/lower body will perform perfectly without thought.

    After 20 years, I undertook a golf swing change. It took me about a year to fully transform my swing. My swing has improved so much and I have lowered my score by 7-10 strokes a round. You can definitely improve after 3 years. You can improve after 20 years.

    When Monte had me casting from the top, I thought he was out of his mind. But since then I've done numerous videos of myself casting immediately vs intentionally sustaining lag and the difference is amazing. Turns out he might know what he's doing! Hah!

    Fantastic informational video. Unfortunately, the 'moderator' needs to slow down and do a better job of listening to the presenter. The butting in was over the top. He interrupted Scheinblum too many times to mention just when he was trying to make critical points. Some of the 'interruptions' seemed to be ego-based on him and his abilities. Let the presenter speak and explain his teaching process without the time wasting comments!

    "Zipper away" " Ten O'Clock back bone" Thanks. In order to simplify and keep my mind off my zipper; At the top of my swing I now will simply trigger my coccyx bone downward an inch as opposes to rotating it along with both sides of my hip simultaneously. Remember golf is pivotal, changing direction and dynamic using both the right and left side of our body and not rotational as one piece. When one side of our body starts the other side automatically kicks in. It's all part of the bones, muscle, and hinges in our 3 dimensional body and our Somatic Nervous System. Thanks for reading.

    I bought the golfing machine book about 2 years ago. I think I should have bought a book on rocket propulsion because it would have been easier to understand. I also spent alot of time on the secret in the dirt site with alot of people describing what hogan meant with some of his writings. I think you have hit the nail on the head with this drill. I dont even want to call it a drill because this is a swing. The nail on the head I am describing is when hogan wrote that he wished he had two right hands. I am 49 years old and have been playing since i was in my early 20s. I have spent countless money on books, lessons, and the next best gadgets. I wish I saw this video when I started instead of trying to get into positions like the pros do. Thank you

    I had an obsession with lag and googled the best golf instructors and got to a sight where they were ranged from 1 to 10. On top was Monte and number 2 is Chuck. I looked at Monte's video of the no turn cast. The first time I tried that everything changed. I used to hit my 7 iron about 140 meters by attempting to hold lag for as long as possible and all over the show. i know hit my 7 iron 160 meters and mostly straight. Every know and then I pull it left but I now I know it is because I move my head slightly forward and did not have any tilt in my address position.
    I highly recommend Monte and must admit I cannot wait to get to the golf coarse.
    Thank you Monte you are my golf idol

    The comment at 10:30 minutes blew my mind. Upon watching videos of my swing I noticed that my hips stall at impact. I intuitively knew this was wrong, but I had no idea how to search for a fix for this. I had been working on turning and getting through with the lower body because I see all good golfers do that, but I had no idea you could do it too fast. I can't believe i was just randomly watching this video and found this fix. It made so much sense. In fact I was a little annoyed that this guy was disagreeing with so much popular opinion, but I am glad I kept watching. Thanks. My only question is why your hips would stall if your arms were trailing, rather than just pull your arms through? It is hard to believe that your lower body with it being a stronger muscle and the main source of torque would stall just from the centrifugal resistance of the arms.

    I like this video a lot. If you try to hold the lag it just makes for tense wrists. Lag is a result of 1.) loose wrists, 2.) pulling the club down the shaft closer to your body 3.) And always good balance.

    I personally was trying to force lag by tensing my wrists and holding the club back. I fixed that problem by relaxing the wrists with consistent hand pressure through the swing. End with the same hand pressure that you start with. Let the weight of the clubhead bring the club through on it's own.

    • @dtgps
      @dtgps Před 5 lety +1

      @jayZoop, Jack Nicklaus had the same idea.
      "it looks like I'm purposely delaying the release of the club. But I can assure you I never tried to delay the hit or retain my wrist cock. That happens naturally, if you start with a proper grip, maintain a light grip pressure and keep your arms relaxed. It's impossible to release the club too early in the downswing -- as long as you move to your left side and swing the club from inside the target line."

    The topics covered in this video should be in a book. You answer what should be our "pursuit" verses what is a "result" of. We golfers are soo desperate to improve we are misfocused. We work on hitting the ball further instead working on our approach shots to the green. When my "pursuit" was to hit more green in regulation, it "resulted" in more pars and birdies (lower score). Ever beginner needs to see this video first.

    First, I want to let you know I’m really enjoying your channel. Lots of great instruction from some great swing coaches. Please don’t take this the wrong way, because I really do appreciate what you’re doing by getting this info out to the masses, but your constant interruptions make it really difficult to watch. I played D1 college golf and almost 15 years later I currently play to a 0.2 handicap. Because of this, I was recently asked to work with several young students to get their games to the next level. These videos are a great resource and I want to see your guest instructors continue working with you, but I’ve noticed them trying to hide a hint of frustration at times when you interrupt for the hundredth time. If one of my players continually interrupted me the way you do these guys, I would assume he isn’t truly listening to the point I’m trying to get across. What is the point of me trying to help if the student isn’t listening anyway? You are asking them for help, not vice versa, so obviously they are the expert. Please allow the experts to speak without derailing their train of thought with a question that doesn’t add any value to the conversation. I realize that might sound like I’m just being a dick about it, but reading through the comments it’s obvious I’m not the only one who noticed it. I think it will make your videos much easier to watch and who knows, maybe the coaches say something invaluable in the time you would’ve taken up with questions. It’s just my opinion and it’s the internet so I understand it doesn’t mean shit, but hopefully you will work on it. Keep putting out great content and your channel will grow more quickly than you think 👌🏼

    I've taken a couple of video lessons from Monte, and he's the real deal. 3 weeks after the first lesson, and me working on what he gave me, I shot my best round ever (70... damn you 69!), with some really solid ball striking.
    Now with the last lesson, and working on that for a few months, I've regained distance that I haven't had in literally 10 years (I'm 46 now). In fact just yesterday I reach a par 5 in which I've only reached in 2 one time before.
    Too bad he's 2500 miles away.

    Monte, i wanted to thank you for finally making me understand the cause for coming over the top and hitting pulls. After i tried the early release and especially throwing the left arm off the body it was like i light came on. Perfect shaft lean, no more pulls. And as an added bonus i seem to make contact in the sweet-spot most of the time. I am a 4 now, could never get lower cause my game was just so inconsistent. This will most certainly change now. It is just hard to believe for me that golf is being taught completely wrong (at least in my experience).

    To get shaft lean the right elbow has got to be in front of the right hip from when club shaft is parallel to ground on downswing and you need to to to try and get that elbow in front of the hip from the top of the backswing. A lot of the best ball strikers Hogan, Snead did not drop their hands straight down or even behind them from the top of their swing but moved their hands from the top of the swing out a little towards the ball and this will shallow the club, and this done more easily if you don’t suck the club head inside on backswing. I’ve seen Tiger Woods hit snap hooks with hands in front of ball with the driver.

  • @plentyofouts
    @plentyofouts Před 7 lety +1

    Monte I think it would be beneficial to do a video explaining how lag when looking from face on at the player is actually largely an illusion. When the club shallows and lays back behind the player on the way down the appearance is an increase in lag. Garcia is the poster child for this. It's not to do with super flexibility in the wrists but how much the club shallows. The club is moving into the third dimension which is not seen on the two dimensional screen from face on. It looks like a big increase in wrist set but it isn't. This misconception is what leads people down the wrong path.

    Brendan - please get Monte and Malaska on tape together. 7mins 40 - yes it does freak people out and takes an age to rewire your head to 'get it'. an over the top feeling from the inside in a strange alien world for someone who drops it way behind on the downswing. Ive had some success with the Malaska feeling and hit some amazing shots but still need some work. Also on a separate subject I have struggled with fat contact for about 2years now. I also had quite a bit of shaft lean at address thinking this is where I want to be at impact. last week I decided I would try and copy some playing partners and after watching some pro videos I tried setting up with a near vertical shaft at address. Net result was ball then turf contact and obviously nice de lofted club at impact. silly game of opposites golf.

  • @wordofmo
    @wordofmo Před 5 lety

    I have a tough time accepting what is said at eight minutes. The idea that you can have the same lag from when your arms are at 8 or 9 o’clock as at impact is not utilizing the nunchuck effect. Your body rotates at a certain speed, your arms move a little faster and your wrists are moving a lot faster. Each previous connection is making the next connection faster. When that’s done efficiently, good clubhead speed is almost effortless. So if your wrists are in the same position at 8 o’clock or 9 o’clock all the way through impact, you’re losing all the clubhead speed that the wrists can generate. It would be like using nunchucks where both pieces of wood are fixed at the same position and when you swing one, the other one moves at the exact same speed. That defeats the whole purpose of the physics.

    You are close to the issue of the hips causing stuck flips and over all bad timing of the arms but you left out one key ingredient. Separation from lower body to upper body. The reason quick hips don’t work for so many players and the reason why throwing the club in works for better players that have issues is because the firing of the hips makes the left shoulder move immediately for most. Your zipper move is so great because it moves the lower body left without rotation. That shift backing into the ball hogan called it is the magic move. What most don’t understand is that fast hips makes most non phenoms steep early. When you rotate fast hips and you don’t have Cameron champ flexibility the upper body is out of the shot early and the athletic mind will drop the club quickly so the player in you can deliver the club from the inside. The key to fast hips is separation. If you can’t get the separation then you need your best sequence timing you can get. For most that play the game at a high level they have determined their sequence abilities. For others that listen to the rhetoric they can go a life time never having shallowed the club properly and creating the maximum flat spot. I would love to see you do a video with this in mind. You can not site stalling hips as a problem. Cameron Champ and several others disprove that. Rory too. His go backwards during the release. In fact in order for one body segment to speed up another has to slow down. You are close. Keep working on the chain of motion, the hips are the culprit but for a chosen few they can crank the hips as much as they want. Key on why they can and others can’t and people will improve. Fast hips and less than tour elite separation equals steepness from the top which equals early extension of every important angle.

    When he is talking how Hogan had longer arms and that is why he could have his right arm bent is wrong, first Hogan set up to the ball with both arms bent. It wouldn’t matter how long your arms are if you setup with them straight at impact, and Hogan lowered his head and upper body at impact compared to his setup so he could have that right elbow bent at impact or it was just a cause and effect scenario.
    Look at players that had the bent right elbow at impact Trevino, Hogan, J.B. Holmes (who has short arms by the way as does Trevino) all their heads drop considerably on the downswing.

If you are properly allowing your wrists to naturally hinge and properly release WITHOUT any effort applied, you will automatically and naturally produce a TREMENDOUS amount of lag. This is EXACTLY how the pro's play. Think super floppy wrists. Use your core to drive your swing allowing your arms to follow (like a car & trailer, car=core, trailer=arms.chest.etc...) and without ANY manipulation of your hands or wrists, allow the club to unload all by itself. It is a difficult thing to master at first as it is difficult to trust the "release" will happen properly, but once perfected you will understand exactly how the top pro players in the world achieve lag and achieve extremely consistent ball striking. The key ---> TAKE YOUR WRISTS AND HANDS OUT OF THE EQUATION!!! ... Pro players do NOT play golf with their hands .. they play golf with their BODY!!

      very well put, Squidly2112. Its about levers and how to effectively multiply torque using leverage. Wrists are free hinges and hands become part of the golf club lever.

      He "had it," but only for a moment in his swing. It's a result of other things happening the right way, not really something to seek of itself. If you see somebody throwing the club early, it's symptomatic of some other problem or just a wrong concept in the swing. Ernest Jones would've called it an attempt to "lever" rather than swing.

    • @96RHE
      @96RHE Před 8 lety

      I think the "fad" is the obsession with creating tons of lag. If you key in on creating it, it seems it's difficult to swing correctly. It needs to become a result, as Monte perfectly said while I type this, not something you chase.

Then take another pic of same wrist angle but lay the shaft down (backward) toward the ground. You'll see that the last pic looks like a lot more lag, but it isn't. It's an optical illusion.

      Monte Scheinblum I've been getting conflicting views on the right hand in the swing. I used to be a good iron player, but I took advice from several CZcams videos and teachers that say grip the club lightly and lead with the left. Well this absolutely ruined my swing. It kept getting worse and worse and a couple of weeks ago I was close to throwing my clubs in the dumpster. Then I tried one thing, I gripped the club harder with my right hand and used more of my right side. I proceeded to hit two whole buckets as straight and long as you could imagine. I honestly think that if you have a free flowing swing like Bobby Jones the advice of light grip pressure and using the left to dictate will work, but if you swing like Hogan you have to be aggressive with the right. Why do teachers insist on changing the swing of amatuer golfers to make the look like a certain golfer instead of just fixing a few flaws and keeping the swing as natural as possible.

His hips do EXACTLY that, and is one of the reasons why he has the fastest rotational speed on tour, by a LONG SHOT! .... In short, while some of what Monte says is good, he is also disseminating a lot of myths. Look, it's simply .. the golf swing is purely physiology and mechanics. There is nothing "magical" about it.

    When the human body is asked to follow a formula (by the world of bad golf teaching) it will ALWAYS lead to failure. Always. Monte is dead on that today's golf instruction is actually inhibiting the improvement of the amateur golfers swing. USGA studies that show a persons game levels off after 3 years is proof of this. This is because, in the background of our experience, we think the golf swing can be achieved by the 'cause and effect' model of performance; the Newtonian physics approach to getting results. Little children know nothing of Newtonian physics and yet the figure out how to stand up and walk. It's about 'awareness'. Being aware of what the body is already doing, being aware of the difference in feel of one movement vs. another. It's called discovery. Little children are operating from this paradigm as they learn to work. The poor sad sack amateur golfer however, gets snookered into thinking formulas/ swing thoughts, are the path to improvement. Nope. that always leads to failure.
    Keep being the anarchist you are Monte' ,,the golf world needs you!
