- The Elvira Show. CBS filmed a pilot for the Elvira show hot off the heels of the movie "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark" though the shows plot line has nothing to do with the movie. I was lucky enough to actually be at the taping of this pilot. The show starred Cassandra Peterson as Elvira and Katherine Helmond as Aunt Minerva. The writing is witty and chocked full of innuendoes and one liners that are so bad they are great! Too bad it was never picked up.

They never really mention her on any prestigious lists as far as comedy icons, but Cassandra Peterson is absolutely one of the funniest humans on the planet. Her comedic timing, along with her physical abilities and facial expressions are bar none. I absolutely adore this woman.

Cassandra said in a convention panel that the president of CBS really liked it and promised her that it was going to be given a series order.
A week later he got violently ill so they brought in a guy who oversaw sports programming as interim president until the other guy got better.
Interim guy took one look at the show and said “We can’t have boobs like that on television.” And vetoed it.
Cassandra says she’s still salty about that to this day.
A similar thing once happened to me. Not because of boobs, but a change in staff resulted in the cancellation of a greenlit project that could have been amazing. I don't blame her at all.

There's no need. She's still active on random one off stuff and Movie Macabre had some reboot episodes in like 2012 or something

This was HILARIOUS! I can't believe it wasn't picked up! The writing and delivery of the jokes were perfect. I'm imagining an alternate timeline where this ran for several seasons and everyone remembers it fondly, like ALF. I wish there were more. I would binge watch them.
So charmed got 8 seasons and two comic books ... but this never got off the ground. How tragic
yeah man, I call bullshit on that one. "Charmed" got a good 8 seasons, a couple of comics (which I didn't read), and a reboot show, but Elvira's show wasn't picked up in syndication (outside of this pilot)? Double Bullshit!!!!

Okay, that was actually pretty good. The talking cat (along with his ascerbic personality) managed to find his way into the '90s-era "Sabrina the Teenage Witch". Thanks for posting this -- I really enjoyed it!
This was produced the year before. Sabrina's plot was no coincidence.

They made the pilot, NBC was so appalled by all the boob jokes because they obviously didn't research Elvira's work enough, so they never even bothered to air this pilot, they just scrapped it

Just looked it up, Salem was a normal cat until the 90's when he was given the ability to talk in the show and was later adopted into the comics. So no, Archie didn't do it first. It seems Elvira did.
Michael Gillespie No too long ago she had another show that she hosted called Elviras movie macabe. The movies were awful but I love her and watched them just the same. I wish she would come back.

It's a shame we only got one pilot episode.
Watching this, it's a major bummer that it wasn't picked up because it would have been instantly beloved. Seeing the way it shared a premise- two witch aunts with a niece and a talking cat- with Sabrina the Teenage Witch is really interesting. Clearly inspired partially by the Sabrina comic, which I imagine Cassandra was likely pretty familiar with, but with a really unique twist provided by Elvira's expert comedic delivery and charisma. I liked Sabrina on Nickelodeon when I was young, but I feel like I would have liked Elvira even more because it would have been much less bland and conventional than Sabrina.

When I lived in Indiana, her show was on Saturday afternoon/night. WGN a from Chicago broadcast the show. And her show was in the same day of Svengouley(?). The shows were a hoot to watch. They would be shooting words of wisdom during the movie that was shown. Great nostalgia shows, they were great. Thanks for sharing this vlog.

This show was so ahead of its time
There is actually a bigger history behind the creation of this show. Cassandra Peterson was actually approached years ago by Brandon Tartikoff to do a sitcom of the same premise but she turned it down initially, but came around to the idea but Brandon left NBC by then. The head of CBS promised her show will be picked up for multiple seasons, but he fell ill and the head of the CBS Sports department rejected the idea due to all the sexual innuendos. The folks at the board meeting were so upset, they all walked out of the room in protest. A few of them presented the idea to the folks at ABC and eventually Sabrina the teenage witch was born. The writing for the show caught the inspiration of someone named Whitney Cummings and years later, 2 broke girls was created. At the time, there was no way that fox would have picked up this show as it seemed extremely similar to married with children The WB wouldn’t have picked it up either as it was dealing with a show called unhappily ever after. The role of page was supposed to be played by Hillary swank, but producers did not see her potential. Family album and it had to be you were the two shows that replaced the Elvira show and didn’t even last the entire season together. The only great part of this experience is that the head of CBS made sure plenty of heads would roll as CBS at the beginning of the millennial would revamp its entire programming bringing us shows such as NCIS, CSI, which were all templated into other Series. It made CBS the number one network on TV, but I can’t help but to think that MacGyver, Hawaii Five-0, Magnum PI, FBI, swat, and seal team all look like they’re produced by the same folks

It's a shame we only got one pilot episode of this!! As soon as I clicked it I was immediately excited to start a binge watch for Halloween, but oh well. This gave me "Absolutely Fabulous" vibes as I watched!! :)

The producer of this show was Peter Bonerz. In the 70's he was the actor who played the dentist on The original Bob Newhart show, he was hilarious. Bob. G

I belonged to her fan club in the early 80's and I have not missed ONE of her shows at Knott's Scary Farm. In fact, I have attended that haunt for over 30 years. Her show is ALWAYS the highlight of my night, when I am there. This year was no exception. THANK YOU for posting this!
