I am British and I have heard that phrase used in the context Mark said. It is uncommon here too but refers to the same concept of a firing squad.
Mark Arandjus I am Russian and i would like to try to sort out what phrase Gorbachev exactly used, but sadly i can't, because audio at 3:09 seems to be montaged for some reason (there is a bit of lip desync). What sounds in russian is "Это был обнажённый нерв" - "It was a raw nerve".
So what Gorbachev meant is only on translators conscience, but it looks like he tried to smile right after.

Been watching Trevor Noah's stand up on the internet these past few days, just found out he's replacing John stewart which I think is a great replacement, I couldn't think of anybody else to fill John's shoes, but now that I've heard news about Noah, I see that he does make a good fit, props to him.
