This song moves me every time I hear it. As a parent (father), my heart breaks that Fantine’s last thought was a longing for her daughter to be with her. The love and sacrifice that a mother is willing to make for her child, which lead to the guilt and burden that Jean Valjean will carry and make amends for the rest of his life, all in this one song.

This is the perfect example of artistry in the voice, the way Ruthie fades her voice in and out with as her character's strength wanes in and out, man that's why we cry. You can hear her death at the end. That is what so much of our movies are missing today, just emotion and imagry in a voice. Amazing!

I truly am in love with Ruthie Henshall's performance here as Fantine. Her voice is incomparable to any other. I can listen to her all day. :) Lea's performance in the broadway was just touching. She has a strong voice even when she was crying. As for Anne Hathaway's performance, I have to give her credit for being able to sing while she's crying in despair too. She moved me to tears. It's truly tough to act that way for a film. I think she does deserve that Golden Globe award. :)

Oh my god I forgot about this song. I'm crying. The bittersweet melody of I Dreamed a Dream reprised in this, as Fantine is dying - whatever little hope or joy left in her life is now lost. Cosette is the unexpected, fragile realization of a dream... Her desperate, last, precious dream is found in Cosette's play and childhood joy, and in the fragile hope for a brighter future for Cosette than Fantine had for herself. She says previously that life killed her dream and she's in hell, and now again her dream is being killed in her inability to see through or ensure Cosette's future. Fantine has lost _her own_ future and dream yet again. Some small comfort and hope that Valjean will care for Cosette. A dying desperate hope for her daughter to live a life free from the immense burden and shame that fate or chance had in store for Fantine. Some desperate pleas as she feverishly goes in and out of acknowledging her reality - to not be alone in the end.
    OOF.

    Cosette, it's past your bedtime
You've played the day away, and soon it will be night
Come to me, Cosette the light is fading
Don't you see the evening star appearing?
Come to me, and rest against my shoulder
How fast the minutes fly away and every minute colder.
Hurry near, another day is dying
Don't you hear, the winter wind is crying?
There's a darkness which comes without a warning
But I will sing you lullabies and wake you in the morning.
Oh Fantine, your time is running out
But Fantine, I swear this on my life
Look M'sieur, where all the children play...
    Be at peace
    Be at peace ever more
    My Cosette...
    Shall live in my protection
    Take her now...
Your child will want for nothing
Good M'sieur, you come from God in heaven
And none will ever harm Cosette as long as I am living
Take my hand, the night grows ever colder
And I will keep you warm
Take my child, I give her to your keeping

    Shall live in my protection
    Take her now
Your child will want for nothing
Good M'sieur, you come from God in heaven
And none will ever harm Cosette as long as I am living
Take my hand, the night grows ever colder
And I will keep you warm
Take my child, I give her to your keeping
    Take shelter from the storm
For God's sake, please stay 'til I am sleeping
And tell Cosette I love her, and I'll see her when I wake

If there was ever a video that deserved a million views, this is it. It's one thing to hit a whistle tone like that, but it's even more impressive how smoothly Ruthie transitions into it.

How does one sing this with so much despair and optimism all at once? Bravo. Truly, that was beautiful.

This concert is the best! It puts the actual first show in a lesser level.

3:20 Hell of an overtone when she softens up that last note. I thought I was going crazy when I first listened to this.

    French version:
Fantine: It is so cold outside.
    The little girls are wise,
    They wait beside my bed,
    As the hourglass empties.
My Cosette, the night is now descending,
Do you see the first star appearing?
Close your eyes, and forgive me, o my daughter,
I dreamed that I would satisfy your need for a family.
The misery is not the dying mother,
But her child, it is the horror of men's hearts,
The shadows are now descending upon Earth,
And I will spend eternal night upon the bier.
Valjean: Oh, Fantine! I have so little time,
But Fantine, allow me to make this promise.
Fantine: Look, Monsieur! Watch her playing!
    Valjean: Sleep in peace,
    Sleep in peace, my child.
    Fantine: My Cosette
Valjean: She shall be in my family.
    Fantine: She is coming...
Valjean: I will raise her as my daughter.
Fantine: Good monsieur, a good angel
Descends upon you from the heavens.
Valjean: You will see her soon,
    I will find her myself.
    Fantine: The light
Is shining from the depths of your soul.
    Valjean: You will struggle nevermore.
    Fantine: It lights up
The broken heart of a woman.
    Valjean: Virtuous before God!
Fantine: Good monsieur, I will be very happy,
To tell Cosette that a saint had descended upon Earth! (Dies)
