He thought I would like it better because it was a much more complete version of the show. I begged and begged and he finally got me the CD of this cast that had all the songs, but was missing small things. My dad doesn't like classical or show tunes which are my favorite, but later he sat with me and listened to both versions of a few of my favorite song. He admitted liking my favorite version too, but I didn't try to make him do that again. But for a few hours I had a dad that wasn't just all about sports...

The sheer joy and bittersweet lyrics that is "and you will be with God" always gets me, Valjean has been a living saint ever since he chose the road to redemption and he never thought that he would be forgiven; but he did, oh he did, he was forgiven and all of his sufferings and sacrifices will be rewarded, as it should be.

“Take these children my Lord to thy embrace and show them grace” The entire musical points us to the unmerited grace of God, freely made available to all of us through the death of His son, Jesus Christ. In “Who am I” Valjean sings, “Can I condemn this man to slavery? Pretend I do not feel his agony, this innocent who bears my face, who goes to judgment in my place? “ What better picture of what Jesus has done for all of us? The innocent who went to judgment in our place....

I listened to Wilkinson sing "Bring Him Home" for the first time a few weeks ago, and since then I've listened to many renditions by many actors in many shows, and Wilkinson is in a class of his own in every part of this play; even in the movie with the Wolverine guy, the only memorable moments for me was him playing the Bishop, and I didn't even know at the time that he had any previous attachment to Les Miserables (the movie was my first interaction with it). It's not that other people can't hit his notes, because they can. But he is the only one I have heard that has a depth and gravitas to make the songs real, genuine, as if they have physical substance and exist in reality. The others are talented, and they hit all the right notes, but they're just singing a song and playing a part. Wilkinson made the songs real in a way I haven't seen any of the other musicians or actors do, no matter how talented.

This story is a fairly faithful representation of Hugo's book.
I've read the book twice but the stage show is something else; I'm lucky to get past the third song without breaking down.
