  • This clip was filmed during my last visit at the Barry Harris workshop in New York City in February 2020, only a few weeks before the covid 19 pandemic hit.
During my many visits at the Barry Harris Workshop in over 20 years, Barry sometimes would invite me to play for the class. I always felt scared to death to play at Barry's request but I never refused. This was one of those episodes. A great memory that I now treasure in my heart.
Many thanks to Mr. Michael Haynes for filming.

the 0:55 time change into the VIm sub into the descending fifths OPENING the left hand into the C minor WITH ONLY TWO VOICES IN THE LEFT HAND is one of the best moments of this recording, and probably in any recording of this tune ever!

What beautiful playing and incredible technique! I know Dr. Harris loved watching you. It makes me feel a little better to know you get nervous! I just received my copy of your album "That's It!" I am on my third listen and I hear different layers and nuances in your playing each time.

One of my favourite stride clips on the web. I like the way Barry had complete confidence in your abilities, such that, he could call out 'stride' and know you were going to be able to make the shift at the drop of a hat. I dare not ask about the ungodly number of hours and years you've spent honing those skills. 🙂

This is easily one of my favorite jazz piano videos on the internet, I just really wish that guy would stop nagging about the tenths, I'd love to clean the audience noise out of this! I've heard this tune before and I can't possibly remember where, I just know that the ending of the main verse hits me with deja vu!
1:54 though, that spectacular finale to the stride section still takes my breath away!

Were you reacting to whay Barry was telling you to do when he said "hit it!" And "Stride!" Or were you both in sync with how the music was progressing?

Thanks a lot for the kind words. I'd say it's my own style derived from the Harlem Stride Piano tradition with the addition of some bebop elements in the right hand.
