I love around 4:00 you can tell they’re communicating and the entire vibe of their improvisation changed and they both followed it perfectly
that's 'chameleon' by herbie hancock that they're riffing on there. Tenor starts playing the bass line which the bari catches straight away. Super impressive, there's a lot of quoting songs they probably expect the other will recognise.

In order for this legendary moment to happen, all of the following were required:
- a guy gets on the A-train to play his sax
- some other guy gets up and starts vibing his heart out and playing hypeman for the sax guy
- a second guy, on the same car of the same train at the same time, has a sax of his own ready to go, and is willing and able to start a sax battle for the crowd, and the two of them are able to match each other beat for beat
It's things like this that convince me miracles do happen

I can't imagine what it was like if you were on one of the platforms the train stopped at. Doors open, and you hear the battle and cheers for a few seconds before it drives away.

You just know there’s one guy who has had a bad day and really isn’t in the mood for this, and when the second sax player showed up he was like “OH SONUVABITCH”
I don't think so. Happiness is as contagious as unhappiness, if not more so- and the train was filled with good vibes. I doubt even someone having a bad day could resist for 5 minutes straight.

@@TiiqawxHD in jazz, there's so much improvisation anyway that if you're good enough, you start picking up on the cues and you can play off each other like that, even without practice. The fact that they both played similar instruments (one's a bari, one's a tenor) meant they were able to anticipate what the other was comfortable and familiar with. That's probably why they both improved on "Chameleon" for a bit there.
This has got to be one of the greatest moments ever recorded. Every single person on the train carriage was completely absorbed in the music and the two saxophone players connected simply through the power of music despite never having met each other before.

Ngl, moments like these are probably extremely rare nowadays. This was spontaneous, authentic. No rehearsals, just improvisation, complete strangers. These days, if someone pulled this in a subway, it's not a stretch to assume that it's for a tiktok or ig or whatever. Planned and noncoincidental, with the intention to go viral. Treasure this.

@@johncraven6671 Their a Baritone and a Tennor sax, so they have different roles, the bass sax just sets the pace, and the Tennor is playing off it. The times their not doing this, they switch to a "call and response" method, which is what one does the other will other respond to.
EXample is when they go silly high (the baritone one strains and sounds a bit elephant-y, its really not meant to do that high).

A jazz instrument on its own is nothing to write home about. You need that harmonization to pop things off.

I love these random musical moments. One of the best times of my life was while cleaning my teeth at the end of the night at a music festival in Holland. Randomly, people started drumming on sinks, walls, bins, etc. Then random guitar, brass, strings guys turned up. I've no idea if it was planned, but being in that moment is one I'll never forget.
Every couple of years this video comes to my mind, pure joy, pure fun, just random people doing what they love and taking the whole train to an adventure. Not gonna lie, it makes my eyes wet, every couple of years.
