I'd like to draw attention to Omori's design as a character, too - many people don't see anything beyond a kid in sloppy clothes, but I think there's more there. Striped white and black boxers, a black tank top, black long socks. The keys of a piano, the top of a piano, the pedals of a piano. Omori doesn't talk or even emote, because - just like how Sunny has trouble reaching out to others - a piano can't play itself. As for the piano's player, well. She's dead. Omori is an empty piano. In this way, he's the ultimate symbol of Sunny's guilt, the last thing that Sunny has to move past. But that doesn't make Omori bad. If anything, he's suffered too. One last thing? If you check the piano Mari used to play, you can find the brand name etched into its surface. 'Omori'.
Interesting take on who/what Omori is I personally saw him as a protective shell Sunny manifested to shield him from the invasive thoughts of the Truth. Similar to Space Ex-Husband where that he avoids feeling anything to avoid the pain. Heck, he even has mild plot armor since he will not succumb so easily in battle which shows just how effective this unfeeling shell is. A few quotes from Strangers in Black Space come to mind: "The form you have taken it...cannot die here" "The Truth is difficult for you. In the past, it has caused you to stray to your destructive form. Your current form subdues that...and although it is also evil...it may still be the better of the two." And during the Hikikomori route you see Sunny desperately trying to get to Omori after The Stranger (the hostile one) forces Sunny himself to face Black Space where Sunny then looses his coping skills and is immediately one-shot by the Stranger bringing up the idea of being trapped down there. After Omori takes over if you return to Headspace and you find the various Somethings the entire party *EXCEPT* Omori will be afraid of them. Omori's primary purpose seems to be to protect Sunny from The Truth. Originally an Avatar to be used as a self-insert, but then Omori took on its own initiative much like how the mind does not always do what we want it to do and it just sometimes directly goes against us. At the end of every area in Headspace we find Omori suddenly returning to White Space right as soon as something involving the Truth comes up. In all likelihood that is Omori himself doing that. Taking himself, and by extension Sunny, away from the stress of facing the Truth by going to his happy place. Once Sunny tries to face the Truth that is the only time Omori becomes an antagonist. He is very much like a cage or a fence Sunny built to protect himself but it also prevents him from properly connecting with others. And in the true route it is only when Omori is gone that we see Sunny express any emotions (besides angry when he's fighting flies). Although the one thing I have trouble reconciling with this interpretation of Omori is that he is the only character capable of having tier 3 emotions. Granted that may just be foreshadowing to the fact that most if not all bosses in the game have the ability to reach tier 3 emotions, but at the very least we do see that there is something....off about the way he expresses them (especially Manic).
For the Persona fans out there, Omori is Sunny's Shadow. Every doubt, fear, and quirk that sunny hates about himself manifested in to one being. When Sunny starts rejecting that part of himself and trying to change, Omori pushes back, and either takes control and kills himself so he doesn't have to face the truth and can dream forever, or is finally accepted by Sunny and fades away, for he's no longer needed.
Different timelines makes sense. Basically OMORI was reworked when Omocat decided to turn it into a game. There is still implications that things from the blog and original comics were somewhat canon (The fact that his imaginary friends exist in the game). What I would say is that the Omori from the original comics/tumblr blog is basically the same one, but reversed if that makes sense. I imagine younger Omori was more like the original iteration then as he became older and it ate away at him more and more, he became what we know him as today.

The er more uncomfortable parts of it unfortunately didn't age particularly well, but it's somewhat important to acknowledge them as the same character.

It's pretty much what I've interpreted but there's a thing I wanted to add (and that's pure personal interpretation): I think OMORI is pretty much everything that Sunny hates, all the negativity but also the violence. It explains why OMORI always have a knife, and at the good ending I think Sunny finally accepts OMORI as a part of him (he doesn't get rid of him, he fades in his arms instead and that doesn't mean he's gone because we saw this before) and just accept what he done and move forward with it. He stop blaming OMORI for the destruction and the loss of MARI, he merge with him and stop being those two different personas who cause his instability and that violent/su*cidals acts in order to move forward. I hope my explanation wasn't messy and is understandable (I'm a french native sorry)

Also, I believe that Omori is another form of SOMETHING. His furious state, observe skill, black and white appearance, and ability to illicit fear in Sunny would point to this. That, and his name ends in "i" like all the named SOMETHINGS.
It's honestly been nearly 3 years since the last played the game but based on what I remember, I think the idea that he's a split personality could be valid but I think omori as a character represents a lot of different things. The hikko ending I think represents in a general sense Sunny being unable to move on. Being stuck in the past and unable to accept and get over the terrible thing that he's done. The suicide is a result of that because even though there's a part of him that wants to hold on to that past, reality does not match what he wants.
