What Was Omori Originally About?

- Omori took quite a few years to be fully developed, and in that time frame there had to be some stuff that was cut out or changed, one of those things being the main story. So, what was changed or cut out and how did that end up affecting the final product?

I just wanted to point out that some of the quotes that were said in the trailer like "Too bad saving the world isn't easy as the games make it to be" were actually quotes that OMORIBOY said in the original comic.
With just how long the game was being developed and how many times they had to switch RPG Maker versions means they probably scrapped more content, story beats, and ideas more than most of us can imagine.
Omocat also did a stream on basil’s birthday where she showed his older designs (he was also supposed to be called Rowan) and talked about some stuff that changed, for example basil’s grandma was supposed to have a much bigger role has later gone to other characters

Yeah thats also how mari got her perfectionist role so flower (basils first beta ever) is actully really important or else we wouldn't have the mari we have today! So basils betas are pretty important with certain stuff 😋
That explains why Basil's grandma was relegated to the real world, after initially being part of the quest involving her grandson as we see in the 2018 demo.
I remember finding out the trailer for this game a long time ago, (2014-15??), and I used to think that this would be a game about this guy who didn't have any friends, and would go have friends in his dreams. I was so wrong XD
But I was thrilled when it came out in 2020! I didn't even know that there was a possibility of it never coming out.

If the game was still close to the original comics, you wouldn’t be too far off, actually! In the OMORIBOY comics, none of his friends are real and he never gets out of White Space throughout the entire comic.
I used to think OMORI was about a spirit child trapped between heaven and hell in place in between 'whitespace', and he's trying to find his way to heaven and meet his friends but is kicked out of it every time, and sometimes he get dragged into hell.

mari (who was originally called mary) didn't kill herself originally. this was a later addition to the game. initially, her character served the role of the antagonist, fun fact.

i think "you're not crazy if even one person believes you" relates to Something. since both Basil and Sunny were able to see it even though it is implied to be a hallucination.
I believe Tako actually shows up in the Omoriboy comic as a hidden figure in one of the entries. OMORI’s trying to stab himself but doesn’t, and if you click the panel it shows that she stopped him. There’s text in hiragana which reads “madamada” (“not yet”).
Edit: there’s also a panel where Omori carves a figure in the ground that somewhat resembles Tako (given the tentacle-like limbs and the question mark on its face).
Amazing video! However there is *so* much more stuff! Here are some things I know: Mari had a slightly different name, originally called Mary. Mary was very different to Mari, according to the sprite drafts OMOCAT released her hair was more messier, implying she wasn't a "perfectionist" like Mari, she was also possibly more of a dreaded figure then Mari. We also have this scene czcams.com/video/erzgjfU271g/video.html take it as you will. The story was most likely redone somewhere in 2016 but the Mary name was changed to Mari somewhere in 2018. Overall great video! Its nice to have someone not go back to the "OMORIBOY HAD IMAGINARY FRIENDSS AND THIS WAS CHANGE S IN 2014!!!!!!" theory!
Very interesting! it's crazy seeing how much the game changed over the years, I genuinely wonder what it would have been like if we got the original story

i don't really think that's just 'messy hair...' i think it was originally intended for her to have died (the way she died has probably changed though. i've heard a theory that in one of the older versions of the game she commit s**c*de, sunny tries to k! ll himself and fails, which leads to him being in a coma. not sure how true this is though!)

Heya! Just wanted to say that Tako, Meido and Uni are Japanese! Tako meaning Octopus, Meido means Maid, and Uni means Sea Urchin. And their designs do correlate to that. So it might relate to something sea-related? Who knows. Great video!
I wonder if tako and uni would have had something to do with the slime girls, and if meido had to do something with sweetheart.
Tako does look a little bit like Molly. Possibly an early beta version?

I don't remember where I saw it, but I once saw something saying that Sweetheart wasn't going to be a major boss, and only became one because Omocat heard "World's End Valentine" and loved it so much she changed sweethearts plot, so that probably would've affected Spaceboy's plot as well. Also, I remember something about Mari originally being a princess or something in Headspace, but I really don't remember much about that.
One thing you overlooked in the 2014 trailer is how Sunny's room has a lot more things in it, like a TV, a game console, and a more modern laptop. Perhaps Sunny was originally not meant to move out of Faraway at the end?

Great job as usual. I really appreciate all the work you put into these videos and they really make my day. I think it would be super cool if you did a video about Deltarune and some of its characters. Its one of my favorite games and i think its kinda similar to Omori so it might be fun to make. Anyway whatever video you make next will be amazing so I'll definitely watch it.

I can understand why they'd change that. While yes, the game does take place in the US, it makes more sense for Basil to have easier access to gardening tools than firearms.

The original Omori reminds me more of Lee Hoon and Suicide Boy for some reason, LOL. :p
Glad to see it become more Yume Nikki X Mother like instead in the end, but I guess the original is still rather interesting. :p
i'm pretty sure basil's name, appearance and personality were changed 3 times. First, basil was more like aubrey, although i can't remember his name. All i can remember is it started with an R. The second time he was changed, he acted like basil but he still looked different and had a different name. The last time he was changed, he was made into the basil that we have today. Not sure about this though, as i heard it a while ago. Also i'm not sure if this is the exact order of the changes. I just checked, and omocat confirmed it themself.

Today I read the omoriboy panels that omocat released, those characters you almost never see in the final game (uni, meido & tako) were likely the imaginary friends omori had, since in one of the panels from omoriboy you could actually see tako, kinda faded, telling something to omoriboy, and in another panel you could also read he had imaginary friends

When I think of scrapped Omori content, I always think of this scrapped dialogue and narration that someone found.
(Trigger warning because this is probably grosser and darker than any of the things that happened in Omori) (also, don't worry, this is almost certainly no longer canon)
During this scrapped dialogue and narration, Mari molests Sunny. I can definitely understand why this was scrapped in the final game.

@russiandoggo4336 Yeah I think that was the video's intent, because Omori Boy drinking is something I would associate with someone who is old enough to buy alcohol. But Sunny is approximately 16 and I don't have numbers about this but I think frequent fapping is quite common at that age. So I just don't agree that that's any sort of clue about Sunny vs. Omori Boy's ages.
Anyway, I'm not trying to be too critical here. This was a great vid and I love JJ Game's videos.
