  • The weather forecast for the first Bank Holiday in May 2019 was to be good. I set off for Killin in Aberfeldy with two of my daughters Bronwyn and Charlotte and Charlotte's boyfriend Cameron. Neither Bronwyn or Cameron had climbed a Munro before (Bronwyn had when she was 12, but that attempt at Ben Lomond was abandoned due to bad weather closing in). Arriving at the Ben Lawers Nature reserve in first hailstones then snow, I thought the weather forecasters had got this one wrong majorly.
    Regardless, I decided to go ahead for at least 1 hour and the weather didn't improve I would turn back. Luckily, the weather did improve as predicted and we were rewarded with a brilliant day of blue skies, little wind and some amazing views.
    Well done to Charlotte (aka Sherpa Lulu) on your 4th Munro. And to Bronwyn and Cameron on your first 2 Munros.
    Ben Lawers (Scottish Gaelic: Beinn Labhair) is the highest mountain in the southern part of the Scottish Highlands. It lies to the north of Loch Tay, and is the highest point of a long ridge that includes seven Munros. It is the highest peak in Perthshire, and is the tenth highest Munro in Scotland. Ben Lawers was long thought to be over 4,000 feet (1,219.2 m) in height; accurate measurement in the 1870s showed it to be some 17 feet (5.2 m) short of this figure.
    Ben Lawers lies on the watershed between the rivers Tay and Lyon. Since the 1950s, water has been captured from the numerous burns on the south face of Ben Lawers and Meall nan Tarmachan as part of the Breadalbane Hydro-Electric Scheme. The water is diverted to the Lochan na Lairige, from where it is piped to drive hydro-electric turbines at Finlarig on the banks of Loch Tay. The level of the Lochan na Lairige was raised by the construction of the 344 metre-long Lawers Dam, a buttress-type dam that is 42 m high. Due to the height of this reservoir the static head of water is 415 m, the highest available on any hydro-electric scheme in Scotland.
    Due to its high altitude and underlying geology Ben Lawers is home to an exceptionally rich selection of arctic-alpine plant species and habitats, and has been designated as a National Nature Reserve (NNR) since 1964.
    Beinn Ghlas is a mountain in the Southern Highlands of Scotland. It lies on the north shore of Loch Tay and is part of the Ben Lawers Range. It lies on the popular path to Ben Lawers from the National Trust for Scotland car park, with the result that many walkers traverse the summit of Beinn Ghlas without realising it. The popularity of the path meant that it suffered from severe erosion, but it has been reconstructed in recent years.
    The Gaelic name is translated as 'grey-green mountain', which refers to the colour of the mica-schist that makes up the bulk of the mountain and that falls as a scree on its south-western side. The path up the mountain leads past outcrops of this rock that also reveal large garnets.
    As mentioned above, the usual route to the summit leaves from the car park, follows Edramucky Burn, and climbs to the south-western ridge of the mountain. The deep corrie of Coire Odhar (the dun-coloured corrie) lies to the north. Walkers who continue on to Ben Lawers can avoid the 100 metre re-ascent of Beinn Ghlas on their return by taking the path that runs west of the summit, down to Coire Odhar.

    Great video mate thank you. Your speech at the end really gives thought to how we need to inspire our youth to get out more which is something I do and will continue to encourage with my young son. Looking at getting these 2 bagged on 23rd of May, thanks again 🙏🏼

      Hi Ryan, apologies for not replying to this at the time. I am only just now aware of it. I hope you had a great time bagging these two awesome mountains. Your son is lucky to have a dad like you!

      Douglas 😁🙌🏼🏔

      Hi Derek, thanks for the nice comments. Hope you had a great day on Ben Lomond. You won’t go wrong with Ben Lawers, it is a straight road up from the car park, well pathed and very scenic, the views just get better and better the higher up Beinn Ghlas you go. Have a great day whenever you decide to go.
      Douglas.

      Hi, thanks for leaving a comment. Yeah they both are fantastic mountains and the views in glorious weather are brilliant. We were lucky the weather broke just in time for us to keep going otherwise we’d have missed out.
      All the best,

      Thanks Kris, that was just enough snow to make it look dramatic without the effort of knee high trudging lol. A great day out and one of my top 5 favourites of the ones I’ve done so far. 😁🙌🏼⛰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      Thanks Pete. Had a great day out with the girls. I even showed them the spot you pitched your tent. That wildcamp vlog you did there is still the best one of Ben Lawers in my opinion. 😁🙌🏼⛰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      Hi Dee,
      you’ll hopefully find these two very straight forward, nicely pathed all the way up from the carpark. Hopefully you’ll get a clear and sunny day also. Coming over the top of Beinn Ghlas and seeing Ben Lawers come into view is just spectacular.
      Have a great day when you go!
      Best Regards,
      Douglas.

    Needed to watch this Douglas, heading up here tomorrow morning with one who's about to break there duck. Another who needs to get out and a third who has caught the bug after doing there first last year. Will continue to preach to the lost.

    Cracking vid mate. Done Ben Lomond last Saturday with my Alaskan Malamute and coming down was hard going with the big fella. You think we would cope with these two ?

    • @DouglasGilgallon
      @DouglasGilgallon  Před 5 lety +1

      Sorry for the late reply Grant. I’m currently down in Wales and hoping to get a hill or two in while I’m here. Yeah, I’d say the the two Munro’s Ben Lawers and Beinn Ghlas should be straight forward enough for your 4 legged friend. Remember also that you don’t have to go back up over Beinn Ghlas on the return...you can take the bypass route which is a slower more gradual decent around the side of the mountain. Let me know how you get on.

    My pal and I did the exact same route yesterday morning. Couldn't have asked for better weather, although it was a tad nippy and there was still a fair bit of snow at the summit of Ben Lawers. Not as much as you folks had to contend with though, haha! Excellent vid and congrats on reaching Munro #31 :-)

    These are the next ones up for me I think. The route looks pretty good, is it easy enough to find from the carpark?

    • @DouglasGilgallon
      @DouglasGilgallon  Před 5 lety +1

      Hey Gavin, thanks for commenting and your question. Yes, there is a very well defined path from the car park right up to both Munros. It's probably one of the best pathed Munros I've been on so far, so you will have absolutely no issues keeping to the path up and back down. Hope this helps.
