    I played this at GenCon. Its a great new take on Pandemic and has enough differences to give a different feel for the game. Also, as a big selling point, you can play a game of this version of Pandemic in about half the time of an original Pandemic game. Everyone that played it with me at GenCon liked it and were saying they would buy it.

    4 Years later, and I FINALLY got a copy of this game! Easily my favorite variant of Pandemic, not just for the theme, but actually the lack of expansions as well. I tend to be very ocd about wanting my games to feel "complete", so I almost ritualistically will buy all expansions for games I own, which also makes me very hesitant to buy new games. This being self contained just makes it that much easier for me to grab and go, as well as... I have a lot of Cthulhu and horror liking people in my family since getting married, so the theme brings them in better too.

    Honestly I love this game and own it in addition to pandemic. It feels like a Call of Cthulhu or Arkham horror adventure, in a 30-45 minute time frame with a small box size and streamlined rules to boot.

  • @kustomkure

    Played it yesterday. 100% deserves a place in my collection alongside the original Pandemic. Completely agree with Zee here. It's a streamlined version logistics wise with added atmosphere. All new things are truly brilliant and fitting. One needs both because you will play different versions with different people. I myself prefer this one actually overall. But if I am for a tougher more puzzly. less thematic challenge I will play the original with the expansions. In The Lab is our go-to one.
    Would like to get Iberia now. It seems like Z-Man is extremely serious about what they put out under the Pandemic name. They are not just printing cash, they truly put their souls into the versions.

If I want a quick pandemic game where I am going to get beaten quickly I will play this or the cure. I have to say that I love the artwork and minis in this version. It is a great reimagining of.a great game and the gameplay to me is definitely more than a simple re-skin

    In my opinion, it simplifies the movement system, research station, outbreak system of the original. Some changes are major, like the sanity die, shogas, old ones, limited spaces to move. Others are thematic reskins.

    I always thought the mechanics for Cthulhu were intriguing but running around curing a disease never really clicked with me. I also always thought the whole Cthulhu myth is was intriguing, but never really saw an implementation of the theme that i thought worked for me. So with this game, i feel like I finally got the right fit for me on both fronts. Plus great miniatures I can paint and cool artwork. (I'm a component junkie, even a great game often loses me with little wooden cubes!) Thanks for the review. Helped me decide to buy this at GrandCon.

    • @ziltoidomniscient8478
      @ziltoidomniscient8478 Před 7 lety +6

      I had issues with the Fantasy Flight Lovecraft games I've played. Arkham Horror was so detailed it was almost obsessive-compulsive, which made it too long to play. Elder Sign, on the other hand, was just a pure chance game, with no Lovecraft flavor. Reign of Cthulhu cures both those problems -- it has much more theme and flavor than Elder Sign, but isn't so intricate that it takes four hours to play like AH. Since I really like the Lovecraft theme, I'd play Reign of Cthulhu over classic Pandemic.

      @hanng1242 Před 7 lety

      Gamera 23 I have actually never played Pandemic (because inner hipster thinks it's too mainstream). My group plays Eldritch Horror regularly because we like the theme and the feeling of a GM-less RPG. Do you think Cthulhu Pandemic feels more boardgamey? So maybe about 45 minutes of playtime? I am trying to decide whether this is worth picking up, of if it will be a situation where anytime we might want to play this, we would end up just playing Eldritch Horror instead.

    • @gamera2351
      @gamera2351 Před 7 lety

      Yes 45 minutes. Maybe less. You can probably play 3 to 5 games of Reign of Cthulhu in the time it takes to play Eldritch Horror. And yes it does feel more boardgamey. I really like the game and feel it's worth picking up...just dont expect anything like Eldritch Horror.

    • @Bodyknock
      @Bodyknock Před 7 lety

      Just an educated guess but this is clearly much shorter than Eldritch Horror, assuming it's the same length as normal Pandemic it's probably a 45 minute game versus Eldritch Horror which can be up to three and a half to four hours for a four player game. On the other hand Eldritch Horror has a lot more content and depth than Pandemic in general so it fills a very different gaming niche. You would play this when you have an hour to kill, you play Eldritch Horror when you want to get together for a multi-hour long more epic style game, so owning both doesn't seem like it would be a problem.

    I think there is something to be said here:
    I like the channel in general even if my tastes do not meet with any of the regulars (i'm more of a Jason-like Eurocentric guy, even if i do play and enjoy SOME amerithrashy games) and I very much enjoy Zee when he slips jokes in Top 10s and whatnot; but, it does leave a bad taste in my mouth when he claims that this is enough of a variant from the base game to own both and then when he talks about Eurogames he's quick to say things like: "Good old Eurogame #742".
    I mean, i'm sure that there are nuances between this and Pandemic, and one guy that has played pandemic 500 times will catch them at a glance; but i can assure you that between one "cube pusher" and another there are a lot of nuances as well.

    • @Haladras
      @Haladras Před 7 lety

      I assume you're talking about his Seafall review?
      Unfortunately, board gaming is in its Baroque period. Competency and the "musicality" (for lack of a better word) is so ubiquitous as to be banal and hard to overcome. Designers craft increasingly elaborate and stylized games to rise above the mob.
      Eurogames are to this Golden Age as dance music was to that era of music. It possesses incredible variation and flexibility, and it's pleasing to the ear, but too many hands have molded it. We'll hit our Golden Mean, our Bach, and then Eurogames will disappear for a while in favor of minimalist titles.
      In other words, we'll turn to the equivalent of rock and roll or Classical . . . even though Euros are technically more masterful, complex and complete in design. Zee's riding the zeitgeist right now.

    • @Haladras
      @Haladras Před 7 lety

      +Sean Weeks *complex, and complete

    • @akaSkyWolf
      @akaSkyWolf Před 7 lety

      Yeah i took the "(...) #742" sentence straight from the Seafall review,
      i didn't mention it because i'm not defending Seafall at all, haven't played it, can't comment.
      That sentence though, is pretty clear, even out of context. To say that there are 'n' number of eurogames that are "samey" and then say that Pandemic and Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu are different enough to grant them 2 spots on my shelf, means a lack of understanding towards Eurogames or too much despise towards them.

    • @Haladras
      @Haladras Před 7 lety +1

      +akaSkyWolf That's fair, and I even agree. I just think that the general opinion of JASE (Just Another Soulless Euro) influences Zee here and indicates an overarching trend.
      An aside: Plaid Hat developed Seafall for a long time, and that might have hurt it. Long development cycles usually either indicate a flawed masterpiece (which is often more interesting) or a muddled, design-by-committee mess.

Plus there are too many Pandemic-esque games coming out for my liking. With this and Iberia coming out this year, I'm thinking we can use a break from them, but this has me kind of interested...kind of.

    • @avisian8063
      @avisian8063 Před 7 lety +1

      Keep hearing this, and just want to say that its really not disposable. The story can be played once, but by once we are talking anywhere up to 48 solid hours of game play. Once you are done you have a playable game, with slightly different rules, that you can play as many times as you want. Its not like Time Stories where there is literally no replay value. You are left with a playable game that is still enjoyable.

    Thanks guys another great review! It looks like now there are two choices for games that are great to play following an adventure with Eldritch Horror, Mansions of Madness and the like. This and Elder Sign. As for saturation, yeah I'd say with the release of certain Arkham style games it's apparent that were reaching a large level of saturation but I don't think it will go anywhere because 1. No one owns the license so *anyone* can make an Arkham style game. and 2. When done well the idea of ordinary people (Ninjas, SuperHeroes, Robots, and Gods need not apply.) triumphing over extraordinary odds is where the appeal really comes from. Operative words there being: "When done well." That's what I wanted to (and did) see in this review so I'll be picking this one up. Kinda' makes me glad I've waited so long to finally pick up Pandemic even though co-ops are my favorite genre'.

    Although I truly enjoy the original game, I think Zee is just too in love with Pandemic to see this game is practically a "re-skin" Tom and Sam's rating/thoughts are more believable, and I think Zee was too forgiving in the theme and lack of originality just cause it's Pandemic. Heck, in one top 10 he had 3 Pandemic games on it! We know it's your favorite game, but not every theme needs to encompass the same formula.
    I'm not a big fan of the over saturation of Cthulhu and, now it seems, Pandemic as well. I know they have another game coming out, Pandemic Iberia, so it's getting a bit ridiculous. I guess we'll see news on "Pandemic: Isis Crisis" at GenCON 2017
