setup requires spawning 1 shoggoth in 1 town space. This is done after spawning the 1 cultists in 2 town spaces.
Hah! Whoops. Missed that rule. Thanks I will annotate the video.
Great review. I have this game and I love it. Kind of dire odds at times but love the art and thematic elements. It's just fun!
A friend introduced me to the board game and at first I was very confused because I knew nothing of the HP lovecraft 'world' but I knew about Cthulhu. After playing it I now love the game and I started reading The Dunwich Horror which so far is awesome. What a weird way to get into something right?
Cool! Not read any Lovecraft myself.
Howesenberg I got into lovecraft because Cthulhu is in super scribble nauts
Oh dear,... I think I want this now. I hadn't paid this much mind until your video. And now I'm probably gonna go insane ...because I really like the way this looks. Thanks, Joel.
Good review. I agree, the thematic effects here are cool.
Great review, thanks
ah the Spaceballs Flamethrower thingy really made me lol
:D
Ahaha. "gateway" - nice reference, even though probably an unintended pun :)
Doh! Should have thought of that myself.
I would hate for a shoggoth to escape into my nether regions... :P
hey Joel - I think your explanation of bus movement was incorrect. When at a bus station, you can discard a card matching your current town to go anywhere on the board, or a different town to move anywhere in that town.
Oh whoops! Totally misplayed that. That makes it even better. I guess I just assumed the rules meant "bus location" when in fact, it's anywhere. Thanks!
I must ask... what is the music in the end of your latest reviews?
Soundhound couldn't find it...
It's my own remix of a remix of a remix kind of thing. I honestly don't remember exactly, but I took a Daft Punk song and layered it with another one. I kind of just banged around until I found something that worked well together.
great review...this game is simple, fun, and a great way to introduce your friends to coop board gaming...beginners will pick it up quick....eventually get to Eldritch Horror ;)
Thank you. I definitely agree with that :)
my first thought was that we don't need another Cthulhu or Lovecraft game, but then I saw all the components, the inserts, the pieces, the rule book, and the artwork. Oh my God. This game is beautiful. I know some people will say pandemic is reaching here to get its hand into a subculture honey pot, but this game looks Kick-Ass
It does look like it takes enough from other Leacock co-ops but having enough pandemic mechanics to be put under that label. It's not like Star Wars Risk, Risk Europe, or The Game of Life Jr to me (Both of the former not really having a lot to do with Risk and GOLJR being a pick up and deliver game with a 6 sided Life Spinner)
I love pandemic, I love cthulhu. And now that I know they work well together, this is a must have for me.
Love the pandemic series. This looks like a great twist.
Cheers Joel. It seems to Me to have taken a fair bit of Matt Leacocks Pandemic style Thunderbirds game and re-used them in this version of the pandemic line. I think this will have a larger appeal than Thunderbirds.
Funnily enough, I found that it borrows some for Leacock's Forbidden line with the draw rate being used as the time limit and simplified hand management (former is a feature of both Forbidden games while the player deck being more generalized is like Forbidden Island's treasure cards). So it is a mish mash of older Leaco-ops with a Cthulhu theme :)
Well done on another early review, Joel. You have been extremely busy on the Lovecraft-inspired gaming front recently. I once heard Eldritch Horror described as Pandemic on crack. Does this game scratch the same itch as EH? I get the impression EH is essentially longer and more immersive but would interested to have your thoughts.
I have been on a Lovecraft I guess. Not on purpose. :) This is a much different game than EH. The only thing EH has in common with Pandemic is really the world map and it's co-op. It's quite different apart from that.
Thanks. Interesting. You never can have too much HPL IMHO. BTW greetings from England.
And of course the theming :P
Hi! Is there a way to adjust the difficulty of this game? Great video!
There is. The rules have ways to adjust the main deck of cards.
All right! Thank you for the information!
Me and my friends were playing the easy version and it's no easy win still, Yig comes to the party and BAM it's pretty much game over.
does the game come with more evil cards or just 4? if not how do you make the game harder?
Just the four, but you can adjust the main deck card count to make the game harder/easier.
Fan of Pandemic, The Cure is fine and Legacy is cool too. This one looks really neat. I'm ordering it for sure especially watching this review.
Good Video.
I hated Pandemic and traded it, primarily because of the theme, so this solves that problem entirely... but I also found that it left me wanting just a bit in terms of depth (it felt like super Forbidden Island), so I'm concerned that you describe this as a tad more simple... The jury is still out for me, but I'm actually considering buying it and Pandemic was dead to me previously, so that's saying something. It's way gorgeous, too! Thanks, Joel!
If you are looking for something more complicated, I'd recommend Thunderbirds. It's a Pandemic reskin set in the Thunderbirds are Go! universe (assuming you are familiar with the Thunderbirds and like them).
Scott Mohnkern Ah, very interesting, thank you! I do not know Thunderbirds, but a cursory glance suggests that it would not interest me. However I do enjoy fantasy and rank Defenders of the Realm amongst my favorites.
Do you like Lovecraft? I am always sesrching for a game that could evoke the same feeling as the books themselves... I have Arkham Horror and am satisfied with it, but was wondering if this Pandemic game or Eldritch Horror would be more accessible since I play solo primarily and set-up and game length are considerations that make Arkham a bit unsuitable. Any ideas on this matter?
Ok I put now the copyright for the name : Pandemic Cthuluh legacy. Doesn't that sounds like a powerful name ?
Could happen. :)
Is this game good for 2 players? Thank you for this video!
It is. Works at all the player counts.
Thank you for your fast response. In your opinion, what's the best Pandemic for 2 players?
Any of them honestly. Pandemic Legacy is my favorite by far though.
Thank you again. I don't like the concept of legacy games so I don't buy any kind of legacy games.
Right now I am looking for the best collaborative game for 2 players. Any ideas?
Any of them really. I would just pick the one that has the most interesting theme for you. I also enjoy Iberia. Not reviewed, but played it at a convention and really enjoyed it.
How do you get all games before their release date?!
Also, this looks really fun but I'm oddly bothered by the fact that the cultists are half the size of the investigators!
Publishers send me review copies :)
Shoggoths are not demons. They are not spiritual entities in any way and are not connected to Abrahamic religious tradition. In Lovecrafts lore they were created on earth (and probably elsewhere) as servitors by extraterrestial beings. Monsters, yes, but demons, no.
Demon isn't necessarily and Abrahamic "thing". ;)
No, but shoggoths are not connected to the demonology of any other religion or beliefsystem either. They are not spiritual or supernatural (which demons are), rather genetically engineered clones.
Defining the Cthulhu Mythos according to any religious tradition demonstrates only ignorance and/or ethno/anthropocentrism, imho.
This being said, I otherwise liked your review. :)
Hah! Fine! :)
Seriously. I frequently use the word demon to mean anything not anthropocentric that's big and scary and wants to kill me. I don't care who made it or where it came from. I don't know for sure that it's laziness... or creative language. Probably laziness.
I fully understand, it's just that the notion that all horror automatically falls within the traditional Abrahamic concepts of good and evil is a pet peeve of mine. Especially concerning Lovecraft.
Although I will give you this, some would argue that human religion originates from the beings of the Cthulhu Mythos in Lovecrafts universe. This would sort of make Shoggoths demon-ish. Sort of. If you didn't know better. Which we do. But still.
I dislike Pandemic but I love Reign of Cthulhu. To me Pandemic is dry, bland, mechaniky, Reign of Cthulhu has a theme I enjoy and its more "fun" to play.
