In my opinion he had the most beautiful voice and was the greatest singer who ever lived. There will never be another Freddie Mercury. He’s irreplaceable.

A Night At the Opera was my first album. My brother took me to the store to buy my first rock album. I didn't know what was what. I picked this album up and he said, "Great album, get that one" so I did. That was 1977 and I have always had this great album in my rotation. You really should hear this song blend in from The Prophet Song. It's transformational.
I was married to a bisexual man from 1977 to 1989. He too died with Aids. I knew about his sexuality before we married. We truly loved each other. We had our ups and downs but he treated well. We traveled, learned to disco dance, had fantastic parties, had a lovely home. But then the Aids crisis hit. It was my idea that he should choose a lover. He did. He had two different lovers but not at the same time. Lol. But he still got Aids. It was 1986 when he found out he was HIV + The 1980s was a horrible time. All the young men who died was so sad. I wish I had known Mary.

I love this song and that it was written for Mary Austin. He was in love with her however sexually he was never going to feel satisfied with her because she was a woman hence why the secret love affairs with men started. (Although his friends did say that they did make love when they was a couple ) He was emotionally connected with her and she was the love of his life but he was gay. People say he was bisexual for this but sexually freddie was not satisfied by women so he was really homosexual though he never felt like discussing it. But you know sometimes the heart doesn’t really see whether you’re a girl or a boy which was clearly Mary and Freddie’s situation. He found a good relationship at the end of his life and he loved his boyfriend however it was never going to be like with Mary because he was in love with her. He knew he couldn’t give her the life she deserved, faithfulness, a family etc so he let her go which is a very beautiful and tragic love story in the end. Because you could notice whenever she talks about him and he about her or when they were together that freddie still wanted her in some level, a more deep level but they couldn’t have each other like they wanted. The best proof of love is letting go and not being selfish and put the other first. Which they did. So in the end it didn’t matter if physically they weren’t together. Like freddie said it was like a marriage. To him, She was his wife. They were together in a much deeper way which is very beautiful.

I believe freddie wrote this from marys perspective theres a live rendition were he says this is a xmass song and bryan may even admits this song is about mary but funny enough freddy proposed to mary on xmass and then never married her because hes sexually attracted to men but romanticly attracted to women in a sense yes he was bisexual and not simultaneously its a paradox i know lol in essence hes recording marys pain of not marrying the man she loves because she knows she has to let him go they truly did love one another despite this and her care for him on his death bed shows this even after all those years

Such a beautiful such an underrated masterpiece as I listened today and I feel the words that he is saying my ex husband has been diagnosed with stage for cancer and we're doing everything we can to help him but it seems like hes waited too long to go get treatment I've been divorced for 11 years I was married for 14 and I can't tell you how much this breaks my heart that hes struggling for the fight of his life at 51 just because I divorced him doesn't mean that my love for him ever died You love on a level the way that Freddie did it's deeper than sex

Sensational! I was given the wonderful A Night At The Opera album as a Xmas present back in 1975. Freddie was my number one teen idol in the 70s. Simply divine, darlings!😀

Damn you Tina Smith!!! You make me cry. This song always make me think of the LOML whom I also lost in 1980, because her Catholic parents would not accept a Protestant. We were forced apart on the night we went to an Elton John concert! (Cue his song High Flying Bird). The Moody Blues songs Wildest Dreams and I Know You're Out There Somewhere also send me off. Oh and Without You by Harry Nilsson. And Lost Without Your Love by Bread. And Don't Let it Show by Alan Parsons. Siiiiiigh! Hope it worked out Tina. One of us deserves it. :-)

Adam Hodgkinson I really love the transition between those two songs..the prophet is tremendous, the point in the song when the vocal "la's" are hypnotic and so beautiful between all the noise..
and that transition between the two songs... something to be taught
Not only that but the prophets song transitions into this through mays classcial guitar work shifting from minor to major in a way that is nothing short of genius

I first heard this song on my copy of the album which I had purchased in the summer of 1976, but only listened to in full after having gone up to college for the first term of my freshman year. That had been a somewhat traumatic experience (for a shy, awkward kid who had been a typical nerd in high school) because I was compelled to leave my First Great Love, with whom I had spent the summer, behind. The album helped me reconnect, although 50 miles (which, then, seemed like 50 light years); this song, and John Deacon;s song "You're My Best Friend" helped specifically helped me to reconnect ot only in general, but to those very private, almost intimate, moments we had shared on our weekend nights.
Separated on the morning of September 9, 1976, we were reunited on the evening of November 23, 1976 when the unusually long Christmas break began. We would have six weeks together. In 1977, the relationship began to dwindle. Even today we are still friends, but no more than that. This song helps me get back to what has been overshadowed by the "than that." Thank you, Queen: forty-five years of standing by me through all this.
