Hello, Dan, nice video, thanks! I haven't been to NYC since about 2005. Growing up, we used to to go into the City regularly being only a few hours away in Scranton, Pennsylvania. As a young child we were actually able to take the train right into the city. I love NYC and have never had any issues there and love the diversity of the food and people there. NYC is probably still just not as a welcoming place as either Montreal or Mexico City. You already know my spin on Montreal and Mexico City as being the two greatest international cities in North America. But interesting to hear your impressions... thanks, man!

I grew up in rural Pennsylvania and moved to NYC about 10 years ago. I've lived at one time or another in four of the five boroughs, sorry Staten Island, and your take on the safety issues is spot on. I ride the subway almost every day and the few times I have felt uncomfortable, usually someone being loud not physically threatening, I usually just move to another car or ignore what's going on around me. Some people I grew up with don't understand how I travel around NYC without a gun to protect me because they read the stories of the violence and I think they are influenced by the cliches on TV and in the movies.
I once overheard someone talking to a group of tourists on the 6-train going through Manhattan about how to ride the subway safely. This was not a tour guide but just someone having a conversation. Anyway, he told them that anyone can tell the difference between someone who rides the subway regularly and a tourist 1) Real New Yorkers will pick a spot on the train platform away from the middle of the train unless they are trying to catch a train at the last minute. Often times they will place themselves on the platform waiting for the train based on where they need to be in the station at their destination to quickly get out of the subway. For example, if you know the exit for the subway station is at the front of the train at 42nd Street then if you get on the train at 14th Street you'll wait for the train near the front of the train. 2) Real New Yorkers wear some sort of headphones/earbuds to block out the screeching of the train wheels and also the world around them. 3) When the train starts to move a real New Yorker makes sure they grab something to steady themselves. Usually, the bars near the doors or overhead of the seats or the pole a few steps inside the door. I have personally seen tourist pinball around a subway car because they don't "grab the pole".
A few places you should see once you come back to NYC are the parks in the city and not just Central Park. Go to Prospect Park in Brooklyn, Corona Park in Queens, or Ft. Tryon in Upper Manhattan. All great parks for a nice quiet walk.

I am a life-long New Yorker (although I have also lived 1 year each in Paris and Milan).
Crime: it is a LOT safer than what gets reported in the media. Happily, our gun laws are much stricter than elsewhere in the States where mass shootings take place (our national shame).
Costs: restaurants tend to be very expensive in midtown Manhattan. Cheaper in lower Manhattan and in much of Brooklyn. But still you have to search. There are many great places where you can eat quite cheaply.
Case in point: In the exceptionally beautiful neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights, there are many expensive restaurants and yet there also some very inexpensive, yet great places.
One thing that seems to be true across the board: if you order alcohol with your meals, that is where you will often pay very inflated places. A single glass of ordinary wine can range from $9 to $18 per glass.

I wish the same could be said about the stigma of “superficiality” in Los Angeles. People misjudge LA a lot
at least the humble down to earth parts of it, which is NOT the terminal of the tourist trap cities of LA. Those areas are primarily of people from other states and countries trying out the “rich and famous” lifestyle but that is not “greater LA” or representative of it as a whole.

My husband, 20 year old son and I went to New York for a week In late April, early May. I am so glad that we went. For me the city was a bit crazy, with all the cars honking and people walking in the cross walks (when not supposed to). Not long into the trip - we were doing the same thing! (lol). We ended up staying in a B & B in Union City, New Jersey - a 15/20minute bus ride out from Manhattan. By the end of the day, I loved going home to this quiet area that still had lots of culture. And way cheaper then staying in manhattan. It would have been over 400.00 Canadian a night for a one bedroom. While we got a two bedroom, with a small living room and dining room, and kitchen for $250.00. What I loved most though was the people in New York. We met so many. So many just trying to hustle and make some money - (hard to see in Chinatown so many elderly people - also doing this). But had some of the greatest conversations! And we saw Hamilton in New York! That was something! So while I was a bit nervous about being in such a big city, it actually felt quite safe. Great people!

New York is a wonderful, unique and cosmopolitan city, there are plenty of incredible things to see and enjoy by a hypothetical visit in my case. It's a beautiful city regardless of its annoying problems like crimes, legal or illegal sale of firearms, unsafe town halls, dirty alleys, rat sighting and so on. Every city in the world has its ups and downs but that doesn't affect the uniqueness of each city at all. Sometimes when I watch your videos, I look at you and I can notice that you're very expressive and you only say what you think, and that's okay. I didn't feel any remorse while I was watching this eye-opening video just because I still maintain the wish to visit New York City someday. I hope my cherished wish doesn't turn into a nightmare. Likely what I say so far wouldn't make much sense because several foreigners are still coming to New York every day, every month, every year and you know how it goes. It's just a matter of being pretty careful wherever I go and whatever I do, nothing more. 😊

Here's what I say about my city: It's not that everyone in New York goes about singing, "We Are the World," but everyone here knows
that everyone else has the same right to be here as she or he, and if someone doesn't like that, that person can leave, because the other
8 million of us are staying.

I just came back from NYC to Montreal, I have the same impression like you, the subway indeed very confusing and can barely hear the announcement. I travelled to NYC by bus, and when I arrived at the port authority station, there is homeless that guide me through the return bus boarding door, I tipped him 10$ :p

Nice video Dan ! I always wanted to go to NY but was always scared. But I'm not scared about it's people. I'm afraid of the cops ! Being dark skin makes me fear my safety from the cops.
But it's relatively close from MTL. I remember back in the day, a lot of hustler would go to NY to buy shoes that we didn't have in Canada. They were shoe sellers. Everyone had their shoe pusher lol. You could find them in flea markets. With the currency rate and the cheaper price of shoes in the U.S, this was very lucrative in the 90s early 2000. With internet now, not anymore.
Like if you had a friend selling shoes in MTL back in the day. 😄

20-year NY'er here - from Mexico City. Agree with almost everything, but would point out that there are a ton of Latinos in so many different other sectors, including high-ranking positions (both in government and corporations). They are harder to spot because they speak perfect English and dress nicer than the stereotypical Latino immigrant. My point is, let's not put a large group of Hispanics in the same bucket as just here to be the cleaning staff.

    • @TheNewTravel
      @TheNewTravel  Pƙed rokem +9

Hi Vanessa! Your point is very valid. I don't at all mean to imply that Hispanics are only doing working class jobs. My comments are more aimed at people who are anti-immigration, just to remind them how much they rely on immigrants every day. While we might not all meet that high-ranking Latino, we probably all eat at restaurants with Latino cooks. But you are right to add this context. I love Mexico City by the way - one of the greatest cities on Earth ❀

New Yorker here and yes NYC is not as safe as ten years ago. In the late 90s, years from 2000-2015 I wouldn’t bat an eye roaming the streets well after midnight. Today I won’t go out after dark. As a tourist, you wouldn’t be wandering around the hoods NY folks do so I don’t blame you for not sensing that level of danger. Amongst American big cities, it’s still one of the safest I guess.

SMATA WICHU? JEET JET? NO, JU?
(For those who cannot read New York: "What's the matter with you?" "Did you eat yet? "No, did you?")
As someone who was born and raised in Queens I can say that the person at the bus station was being as polite as they knew how.
    .
Not many people are proud of admitting they come from Queens but wacha gonna do?
Here's a NY story I love. JFK airport. Circa 1980. Everyone is waiting at the luggage carousel . And waiting, And waiting, And waiting. No bags are coming out. Typical NY.
Finally, an old man in a very heavy Jewish NY accent says in a loud voice, to no one in particular:
"Well, first they gotta have their coffee break. And then they gotta have their cigarette break. And then they gotta call their girlfriend..."
Regarding announcements. All public announcements made in places such as subway and bus stations in NY all sound as if they were being made by Charlie Brown's teacher. You're not supposed to understand them and you're not supposed to ask.
