Tactical Training Techniques: What's A Good Distance For Pistol Practice?

  • A lot of people wonder what's a good distance for pistol shooting practice. The truth is that it really depends on you and your skill level.
You can get more tactical training tips and other great content at: aliengearholst...
It isn't so much that there's a best distance to practice your handgun shooting at. It's more that there's a best distance for you. Everyone has to start somewhere.
Like learning any skill, you start by finding your baseline. If you can shoot very accurately at 5 yards, you need to take the target to 7 yards or to 10 yards, whatever distance starts to demand more effort to make accurate hits.
Start with slow, single shots from low- or high-ready, with presentation. Once you're getting 70 percent or more of your shots in the target area with ease, it's time to increase the distance from 7 to 10 yards, 10 to 12 yards, 12 to 15 yards, 15 to 20, whatever the next jump might be.
You also want to start adding pressure in terms of time. Instead of slow, single shots, start shooting strings of 5 or 10 rounds at a time. Start slow, and get the tightest grouping you can.
Once you're consistently shooting tight groups at a set distance, get a shot timer and start going a little faster. Try to shoot the same size of group in .25 seconds less, then make the next jump down in time.
After you're shooting tight groups quickly, take the target out farther and start again.
As you can see, it's not really about the actual distance, or the actual time, when it comes to pistol shooting. It's about finding the distance and time constraints that are just beyond your reach, and improving until you reach them and beyond.
Progressive overload works just about everywhere.

I would say for private citizens make sure you can consistently land shots in the A zone with decent speed between 3-7 yards since that is the distance of most defensive shootings then move it farther if you want more of a challenge to hone your skill.

Agreed. And this is what good instruction looks like. People don’t understand how serious we shooters take our craft.

70% is still a low standard. Would recommend 90%. Why so? We are still practicing in a sterile environment. Add the stress and that 70% goes down to maybe 30%... With a ceiling of 90% or higher - adding stress still keep it at a higher margin than average.
Nonetheless, good video!!! Good content (I love the 'overloading' piece, and this is how I suggest folks should practice) and good instruction...!!! One LIKE from me...

Groups always look great and boost egos. Static targets and shooters make for good groups. In the real world badguys move and so do you. Its not about tight pretty groups. Its about kill zone hits. Much harder with moving targets.

It's hard to tell what my skill level is. I went to the range with some coworkers last week and at around 18 yards my grouping was around the size of a hand from palm to fingertip. First time I shot in a few years but I can't help but feel like I should've done better.

Most self defense shootings occur within 7 yds. Therefore, training distance should be no more than 10 yards, preferably 90% of training distance should be 7 yards.

Practice makes perfect only if it's perfect practice otherwise ingraining a bad habit. Then comes the question what is training compared to practice, Who is training what are you practicing, if your doing something incorrect do you know how to correct it. At 5 yards should be size of a quarter. most shootings occur within 4% of those shootings took place at zero to two yards with minor physical contact occurring in a couple of those. 87% were between three and five yards. 4% were at five to seven yards, and another 4% were all the way out at 15 to 25 yards. Tom's explanation for these numbers is that most civilian incidents involve armed robbery or sexual assault.

I was always trained to go for CBM with a pistol and headshot with a rifle. So I've always trained to shoot at 30 yards with a pistol and 100 yards with a rifle. At 30 yards or 90 feet if you encounter a situation like some nutjob with a gun, you access the situation and at 30 yards the perp won't notice you and your hand gun, you find the best shot and take it. I've never been put in that kind of situation but I have been within 30 yards of a black bear sow and her 2 cubs and she charged me, let's just say her cubs no longer have a mother. FWP wanted to know where the rifle was. If I discharge my weapon on public land to defend myself I'll be the first to alert authorities. I called the local Sheriff who dispatched FWP and also sent an officer out. Lucky for me the local sheriff deputy also responded to me "unsafe shooting" on my parent's property and that call was unfounded and the officer was impressed my with my skill. When the officer showed up and saw me standing there, he told the FWP officer "He doesn't need a rifle, he's that damn accurate!" at which point the FWP officer says "if he so accurate, hit that no trespassing sign". Which was about 15 meters away. I said "OK, but your replacing the sign", aimed and shot once I was aware of my surroundings and the back drop. Dead center of the sign. At 30 meters you have time to react to the situation and take your time, and aim, at 5 meters, I'd honestly be curious about the grouping in my case

      @russellrudolph4051 Před rokem

It's nice to be able to shoot accurately at 30 yards, but you better be sure about the perp or nut job, because the rules of 3 say , this person outside of that, unless he is threatening you with a gun.
