Six weeks ago, on a Saturday evening, the phone rang. “Leon, do you still want to take in a dog from Ukraine?” There was a pause, a silence that seemed to stretch like the shadow of something lurking just out of sight. “Hello, are you there?”
“Yes!” I replied, a spark of anticipation flickering in my voice.
By Sunday afternoon, Lucky was with us. A kind of Border Collie, with eyes that seemed to hold a story untold.
Now, six weeks later, something remarkable has happened. They sleep together, all of them-four cats and Lucky-entwined on the couch like characters from a bedtime story written in fur and purrs.
At first, Lucky viewed the four cats as prey, or at the very least, something alien to her senses. But now, they sleep so sweetly against each other, having forged a friendship in the crucible of shared space and time.
I just wanted to share this small, extraordinary miracle.

I've had Kuvaszes for the most part of my life. They are a breed from Hungary but originally dating back to Sumerian times; its name is even found on Sumerian clay tablets as "Ku-assa". Several breeds of these big white guardian dogs appeared in Europe due to people migrating. So from the very east to the very west of Europe you can now find offspring of this old race. Its main characteristics are: they are white and about the same size as a sheep (so unlikely to be mistaken for a wolf), they are very protective of the people and animals they have grown up with but very friendly in general. Unless your intentions are bad, the Kuvasz has a long history of feeling the intentions of people. I've experienced this several times. The Hungarian king Mátyás had made so many enemies that he kept himself surrounded by Kuvaszes at all times to protect him. The Kuvasz is so protective of his/her family and home that it nearly got extinct after WWII and again during the Hungarian uprising in 1956. The Germans and the Russians just couldn't enter a premises or house while a Kuvasz was defending it. So they shot them all. It is only thanks to great efforts of careful breeding that the Kuvasz reemerged as a race that has few hereditary problems and is now doing very well. So it can be done to breed a pure-bred race from a limited gene pool if you focus on the health of the dog instead of desired human external features. I need to mention my very good friend Dick Koster here for his efforts as an expert in genetics and genealogy for keeping and making the Kuvasz as a race as healthy as can be both in the Netherlands and Hungary. And America, Scandinavia, Japan, wherever ... he's all over the world!

Just yesterday I discovered what pure bred means. Pure bred dogs are developed by humans through selective breeding. The other breed are called landrace or natural breeds. That are dogs breeds that developed on their own, by adaptation to local circumstances. An example is the African Basenji.
With cats it’s for example the Turkish Van, that still lives there.

2:38 Did you get the joke? A long list of ailments in dutch is a "waslijst" he said waflijst as a dog says waf.

And there is another horrific thing caused by this "breeding" process. I have two amazing rescuedogs. They are mixed. When going on a dog walk, I'll often get the question "What breed are they?", and when I answer "I don't know, it's a mix of many breeds I think".... there is that look... as if my dogs by that answer are inferior to theirs.
And another thing.... because there is a lot of money going around in the "making" of "the perfect" dogs. There are way to many dogs born. There are so many dogs searching for a golden basket, but people prefer a new born puppy of a certain breed.

Yes, thats what always baffles me about dog owners. If you ask a cat owner what breed their cat is they often dont know. Ans mixed breeds are not frowned upon.

In the Netherlands dogs don’t stay that long in a shelter, in my experience. When you search on the national website, the dogs are gone before you know it.
Lot of rescue dogs come from abroad nowadays. I got my latest rescue from a shelter, but he was originally from Spain. In my apartment building all dogs that lived here the last 15 years came from other countries. Also not one pure bred.

I will say as far as I'm concerned Arjan solution isn't right. Dogs shouldn't be bred for the wrong things, but to just simply make everything a mix doesn't solve that. You have at least as much chance that the problems combine, instead of cancelling each other out. Breeding should be done ethically, by actually focusing on health. A mixed dog is not by definition a healthy one.
