    • @saio_mori
      @saio_mori Před rokem

      @@edwindevries5869 you do know what happens when water rises to extremely high temperatures, right? sure, the 'meltdown' might be cooled in a short period of time. But what about all that water that has now risen to high temperatures? that water is not longer water as we know it: it's turned into very hot steam that can burn people way worse than that meltdown ever would, as there is no escaping that hot steam. The steam would first burn all the people (and WILDLIFE) within a close radius, which would quickly turn into heavy rain clouds which would be another problem entirely. there is no good reason to build them on water rather than land; it would also be harder, longer and more expensive to transport that energy to land, aka where it's actually needed.

    hello from the Netherlands Highly .

    • @bentels5340
      @bentels5340 Před rokem

      Actually, most of them don't use nuclear power. There are something like 47 aircraft carriers active in the world as I write this. All the nuclear powered ones are American (11 of them). With submarines the ratio is vastly different, not only because not all submarines are nuclear but also because not all submarines are military.

    • @Megacheez
      @Megacheez Před rokem +2

      @@bentels5340 the point being thats quite a few nuclear reactors that are subjected to the worst possible conditions(salt water environments are among the harshest environments). and apparantly even the risk of outright destruction by high explosive weapons is an acceptable risk. (its a prime military target those subs and carriers) but oh dear if the russions and ukranians start fighting around a nuclear plant then its a major risk. just dont mind the US who sends nuclear powered equipment right into battle thats fine and risk free......just forget about those times in wargames that US carriers were sunk by simple diesel subs.
      anyway i think you get the point, while nuclear energy is hardly risk free its still way safer than any other source of energy. but same as with flying(safest form of travel!) the attention goes to every thing that went wrong (plane crashes) in stead of looking at the real numbers across the board.
      its an emotions game, you have no control over a plane crash, but you do control your car. thats why people dont really fear a car crash as much as a plane crash. They think they will be able to prevent a car crash themselves which makes them feel in control, even though they rationally understand you cant control other (drunk) drivers driving into our car.

    • @bentels5340
      @bentels5340 Před rokem

      @@Megacheez You do get that they don't hang those reactors in the salt water, right? And that if a nuclear sub or carrier is sunk and the reactor goes down, it ends up being surrounded by the same material nuclear power plants use as radiation shielding, but much more of it? Whereas if the Russians breach a reactor in The Ukraine the radioactive material will be exposed to the atmosphere? Including wind? Sorta like what happened with the Chernobyl installation?
      Risk is defined as probability of occurrence times impact of occurrence. With plane crashes and nuclear incidents, the probability may be low but the impact is high. That means the risk is not negligible.

      @bentels5340 Před rokem +3

      It's an idea that has been played with several times over the decades. From what I understand, the basic problem with thorium reactors is that they produce less energy per unit of "fuel", which means you need more of them or you need bigger ones, making them more expensive. So basically (again, from what I understand), they've never been economically viable.

    Windmills for energy cause mental problems because of the noise they produce. Also the cows become crazy, they can't progress that noise. You can only built those windmills in remote area's where there are no animals suffer the noise and also no humans. For example in deserts. Not here in the Netherlands where it is very crowded... Also the production of windmills and solar panels are not very clean. The windmills itself are buried in the ground, because they can't recycle the windmills.

    Not just about money, the opposite even. Most environmental organizations have roots into the seventies and eighties, most of the arguments are still the same and they are imprinted deeply on the collective minds, and they are not rational or reevaluated. These arguments from Lubach are also not new either and were heard in engineering and scientific circles in the early nineties. (and probably before, but then I wasn't part of them). Though back then the argument was still more "fossil fuels will run out in years, rather than climate.

Hurray net gain right? Well not so fast bringing 2.2 energy into that chamber required much much more energy more then 10 times the net gain , much energy was lost before it came into the chamber! BTW, the realistic core (hah!) of the "China Syndrome" myth (a core meltdown) has in fact happened, at Three Mile Island. Scared half the United States shitless because it was 12 days after the movie "The China Syndrome" was released. Other than that though the movie did nothing but prove that American high school education was no great shakes between 1965-1979 either, as a tunnel drilled from anywhere in the US straight down and through wouldn't end up in China.

    In 1987 I was still in school (I'm 48 now) and we all got the question: what do you think of nuclear energy?
    Most kids said that it's bad and stuff. I replied that it's not much of an issue, as there's just steam coming out of those pipes, but that the waste is the main problem.
    The teacher came to me and we had a good talk about it, he agreed with me. One solution can be to shoot the waste into the sun, problem solved.
    Moral of the story: if a 12 years old kid in 1987 already knew this, why is it still so uncommon in 2023? And why is money an issue to improve our entire planet?
    There are about 195 countries in the world (a little less or more, some countries don't recognise some other countries). If every country contributes it's part where possible for free, as an obligation to our planet, to make it a better place for all of us, problem solved. It's not that complicated, it's money, greed and power preventing this, as so many other things.

    Everybody is talking about Chernobyl and Fukushima but I also remember a documentary about Three mile island in Pennsylvania. The aftermath is usely swept under the rug. My brother was born in 1986 and he and a lot of his former classmates have had cancer when they were beween 18 and 25 years old. I've visited Chernobyl myself when the nee sarcofagous was built. It still anything but safe. The war between Ukraine and Russia has caused new threats because the Russians were digging in the famous Red Forrest and bombing near the site. I get the current environmental issues but even the European Union finds the Dutch goals very very challenging. Our country is screwed by these decisions. Too many building projects are postponed while we're in enormous lack of affordable housing or housing anyway. Farmers will be kicked out of their businesses because of the pollution. And what happens when we will be too dependable on other countries? Well, Russia is the perfect example with gas. I know a bunch of people who are paying 6000 euros a month for electricity and gas. When I think about the smog in India due to pollution or that so many countries don't have smart traffic lights or do not even recycle their waste what's out tiny country change in the big picture. And what about not reproducing? Of course, because it's normal or it's the standard to have kids your not supposef to mention this but it will effect almost every environmental issue in the world. Anyway in the end.. In The Netherlands we're screwed anyway..

    For the most part Lubach has a good point, but he's being somewhat untruthful while trying to sweep the downsides of nuclear energy under the rug. High-level nuclear waste is going to be dangerous for around 100.000 years -- and that orange box isn't going to last that long. Which is why it isn't intended as permanent storage. So what is, you ask? And the answer is: we don't know. Unsolved problem. There are countries that are dedicating granite caves to this, but we don't have those. And the problem here is, it's not our children we have to think of. It's the children 30 and 60 and 120 and so on generations on. Who can guarantee us that if we put up a big sign that says "KEEP OUT", they will still be able to read it? This is perhaps a containable problem, but not necessarily a simple one.
    That aside, nuclear energy is not renewable -- even oil and coal regenerate over the course of thousands of years, nuclear does not. We have a limited supply of fissible material, so it's not a final solution.
    (Edit: forgot something): BTW, it's cheap of Lubach to say that "only one" person died because of Fukushima. It will undoubtedly be more -- although a number are still alive right now.

    • @therealdutchidiot
      @therealdutchidiot Před rokem +2

      Okay, let's expand on this. Let's get down to the physics.
      What does it mean when something radiates for 100 years vs 1000 years or 100.000 years?
      It means the same energy is being output over a longer period. Nuclear waste that has a half life of say 50 years is a lot less dangerous than the same waste with a half life of 500 years.
      The argument literally ends here, because it's elementary physics.
      Trace back the waste that keeps irradiating much more than background, which is what the 100.000 years means.
      It's just not that dangerous. It does literally nothing.
      In the same vain, nuclear waste that irradiates the surroundings over the course of a day is really dangerous. The expenditure is constant, the time period is (mostly) the key part.
      In essence, radiation, electricity and yes, even temperature follow Ohm's law.
      Responses like yours show people in general don't know the physics. This is the problem.
      And this is why it's all about emotion. People think it's dangerous when it really isn't.
      It's the same thing with "radiation" from mobile phones, WiFi and the like. Even a simple lightbulb is much more dangerous than those things combined. Because yes, it's the same thing. Light? Radio? UV? Röntgen? Gamma? It's literally the same thing, just different wave lengths.
      WiFi and other mobile signals aren't only much less powerful than visible light, but up until UV-B there's literally no danger at all. And the danger starting at UV-C means you get immediate sunburns.
      Look at how much more powerful Gamma and Röntgen are, and do consider the fact Röntgen is generally safe.
      That's the physics involved.
      You know when a bit of Plutonium or Uranium gets dangerous? When you eat it. The skin protects from outside sources, like the freaking sun.
      Don't be gullible, learn some physics.

    People are scared of nuclear energy and if something does go wrong, it indeed will go very wrong. However, fukushima was caused by a natural disaster.
