I bought one of these a few days ago for my bedroom tv. And boy oh boy... in a small enclosed room it sounds brilliant! The side speakers do actually work to bounce sounds around and give a awesome surround feel, plus the sub kicks HARD.
I did my surround test with the D-Day scene from Saving Private Ryan and it gave me goosebumps.
Yes i agree, i bought it recently and was a little iffy on the side firing speaker placement but found that actually it does the job very nicely for a virtual surround effect, sound quality is very good too
Nice this was my concern cool.
Just got this baby today and it sounds great. Full bodied thumping floor rumbling bass, great cinematic sound, clear voices, good sound separation, good width of sound, just no real rear surround, its all pretty much front heavy. Recommended

Quick note the calibration for Automatic beam calibration you hold the hdmi button for 5 sec and the AMC will say start, it will say complete when done if it says failed then redo it. The full manual that explains this is on JBL's web site
The calibration works you just have to long press the hdmi button and then it will automatically adjust

Thank you for this video. I just bought the JBL 5.1 and I must say for just a soundbar and a sub woofer the sound is amazing!! If you are on the fence about this item order it up, you will not be disappointed. I have my installed in a smaller size family room. What I like best is how the sound can transition from all hell breaking loose to a quiet talking scene without having to turn the volume up and down. Having 5 bass levels is a plus, you can set it to fit your space. Mine is currently set to 3. The auto calibration is nice since. You just sit in your TV viewing location, press a button and everything will take care of itself. Thank you again for a great video!!
I own it, hold your bass level selection and hold for 55 seconds and it will run calibration for you.

There is a way to calibrate the speaker by holding down the hdmi button on the remote.

There is calibration option by long pressing HDMI button, smart sound option too... You should have included these options to give a full picture about the system...

Hey there, thanks for the video and showing so much detail. I heard JBL Soundbars suffer from a short lag in locking on to an audio signal when there is a dip in volume or absence of signal even for less than a second. This results in the start of a sound be missed and noticeable gaps in audio. Does this soundbar overcome that issue. Did you test for that or notice it? Thanks.

This or the old 5.1 with detachable speakers or the Samsung Q70T? Q70T is 318$ cheaper here in my country at 480$.
The other 2 priced at 800$.
I bought this one yesterday, i love it. However I have ofc connected my TV arc HDMI with soundbar arc HDMI, then my PlayStation has its HDMI to the TV. The PlayStation has a really nice sound with the soundbar but the tv is slightly lower in volume from the soundbar. The deep bass when i ride my horse in assasins valhalla almost feels like the horse is trembling in my living room :D

If you could choose between this JBL soundbar you just reviewed and the JBL 5.1 soundbar with the detachable speakers, which one would you choose?
I haven't tried the other version but I find that without surround speakers soundbars lack the immersive experience of a true home theater, so the fact you can use them as rears is very intriguing, I'd probably try them first
Jacob Dark your right I mean the cheapest vizio I could here birds behind me etc. with out rears but to have speakers in back it’s got to sound better meaning immersive.

Please i will like you to observe the latest firmware update on this soundbar, the bass volume is now 1,2,3,4,5 instead of low, medium and high also the bar volume is now very low compared to the older firmware version, will love to know if it's a good upgrade. thank you. . .

I returned my Samsung Q60t today because the sound was too low and the base just wasn’t there and I picked up this JBL 5.1 for 300$ at Best Buy and I’m satisfied, the dialog is clear and loud. Ohh and did I mention how loud the base is? the base is super loud feels like you’re in a movie theatre. I updated the sound bar via Ethernet cable and the subwoofer now has 5 modes vs the 3 that it came out of the box. this sound bar really makes the Samsung Q60t sound bad. What I like about this sound bar is that the base is very loud and the dialog is just as loud. Is 300$ a good deal?
Thanks for this. I've been going back and forth between the Samsung Q60t and the JBL 5.1. Do you feel like the JBL 5.1 gives a better "surrounded sound" experience vs the Samsung? If you were to play each bar without the Sub would still prefer the JBL?

I did a side by side comparison with the Klipsch and the JBL had a fuller, richer sound

The bass is good on this one it's quite immersive, unfortunatly my main printed circuit board broke down after a month wich isn't uncommon with JBL.After i got it repaired it was also updated with new software.With the new software you only have 3 instead of 5 basslevels.Unfortunatly it still has issues with the software on this moment and i currently have no sound at all only bass.It could very well be that it worked fine for other people i don't know.I've only read about the Bose and the sound seems to be excelent it only lacks bass, but since you are going to buy it with a woofer i would definatly go with Bose.You can do a side by side detailed comparison on Rtings.com.Good luck!

How do these compare to the Logitech Z906 and Samsung HW-Q60T soundbar? Love your videos.
I know that on some sound bar systems if you have the volume up high and turn the woofer up all the way it blows out the subwoofer. Did you feel like that was going to happen? Or did it feel and sound like it could have handled more?
@Danny oh awesome, I had no idea that was even a thing. I mostly have the bar on volume level 20 and the sub set to 4 because I'm too scared to put it all the way to 5 in fear of a nuclear explosion.

Very good sound once you pass the 13 volume. Deep bass 🔊5 volume plus excellent 📀 and 💿 sounds best
I just bought this Friday. It obviously hasn't come in the mail yet so idk how it sounds but all the reviews for it are highly positive. I'm really excited I'm just worried about the "Surround" functionality. I normally use tv speakers or my old 2.1 lg sound bar with a 6" woofer so I'm sure it's an upgrade.

What is the proper way to plug in the HDMI cords? You forgot to show that part.
Always use HDMI arc when possible, HDMI arc is able to send traffic both ways (audio/visual) thereby eliminating any other cables going into the TV

Have you resolved your sound issues, if not is it just the fire TV that's making the distorted sound or is it on all sources?
I have the JBL 3.1. Amazing sound bar and subwoofer but it suffered from an audio delay. When there was a moment of silence the sound bar would turn off then come back when a consistent audio signal was happening. Horrible for gaming on PlayStation and Nintendo switch. Last time JBL released a firmware for mine was in December of 2018 and it did not correct my problem. Did JBL correct this issue for the 5.1?

Great purchase i made its great for music and movies . Yeah you get what you pay for but for 500 it’s a bargain and well worth the money. TBH I didn’t need to buy one but my entertainment area started to get all cluttered. Sounds really great on a Samsung TV especially on the Altmos damn big difference it’s so more dynamic compared just to having heavy bass.I have a Sony HI-FI home theater system that’s a size of a bookshelf speaker that pushes 500w and has a sub with Dtsx has FM radio and a CD player and plays mP3 flies using flacc other formats it still works great .but it’s already 9 years old going on 10 in January. With no hdmi inputs just aux/opt but of course it’s has more earthquake bass and tremble compared a sound bar
I've been waiting for this unit to be released where I live, I am a huge jbl fan and have demo'd the previous 5.1 numerous times,being a big big music fan I found it coming short in the mids alot so much so it has swayed my purchasing the previous model when comparing it to a similiar budget category like the samsung Q70R and even the Q60R which in my option is alot more well rounded. So my question, have they improved on the mids?? And how did you find it when listening to music??
I can't comment on the mids vs previous models but I tested it against the 3.1, several Samsung models as well as the Klipsch and it was the clearest with the best balance of "bar to sub ratio". My tests consisted of loudness, clarity and whether dialog was clear and it sounded great in all 3 phases. If you're unsure I'd say give it a shot and if it doesn't meet your needs be sure the retailer offers a return window.

Can anyone provide a longer term review of this? I’m basically looking for something for music and maybe CZcams videos occasionally. I do enjoy bass, and this systems seems to have the largest sub in this price range. However I’m on the edge about pulling the trigged due to a lot of Bluetooth connectivity issues, lack of sound quality reviews I’m seeing... Can anyone attest?
As a reference point, I’ve been rocking a pair of free computer speakers with a blown out 6 inch sub for about 5 years now and they’ve done the trick. Not an extreme audio connoisseur here, just like to jam out every so often.
If you like bass, then if I was you I would hold off purchasing a soundbar altogether! After all you wouldn't want buyers remorse, you really should consider buying a cheap £300 receiver with a at least a 2.1 setup system (preferably a 5.1) that way over time you can always add to it, plus when you're ready and have enough saved, you can go and buy yourself a lovely dedicated subwoofer! If one was to do it this way, i could guarantee one wouldn't have buyers remorse
@@totalplonker824 That ended up being my plan. I replaced the subwoofer in my klipsch 2.1 system, and it does the trick for now. I’ll plan on eventually building a system.

jbl and samsung harman always good , for me if you use samsung tv use samsung 11 channel soundbar same technology with jbl , if others tv use jbl or hk soundbar .

I would get the one with the separate speakers, because I read that this is a refresh of the old 3.1 system. The older 5.1 should be getting a replacement soon, hence the price is down. Maybe check out other reviews about the one with separate speakers.

I see only one HDMI port on the back. My friend has an older non smart TV with no ARC and a blu-ray player. Would he be able to run both his TV and his blu ray player through this soundbar?
He can connect the optical cable from the sound bar to the TV. Hook Blu ray up to Tv's hdmi and sound wise he's good.
I am this close to buying this but I'm torn between this, the samsung q70t or do I go all out for the more expensive sonos arc. 😱

@@TheChriscrowder I was at my friends house who bought this JBL soundbar and no it does not show full potential of surround sound plus it doesnt have dolby atmos but the bass its really strong and deep. Anyway i think its to expensive here where I live it cost 650 dollars (thats Just my opinion).

Good review. Did you use digital optical or HDMI to connect with TV. I noticed 2 HMDI ports. How do they each work? Thank you
If your TV has HDMI ARC, connect this to soundbars HDMI ARC so the TV remote can control the soundbar volume. Also make sure the CEC on your TV is turned on for this to work. You can use the soundbars 2nd HDMI to connect straight to your game console. If you use optical, the sound quality should be comparable to HDMI. They both support up 5.1 dolby digital. The only difference is that optical is designed for audio only and HDMI is designed for both audio and video. If you look at the the older component connections, you will see that it has 5 cables. 3 for video signals and 2 for audio signals. HDMI combines them all into 1 high quality bandwidth cable.
You say it has Chromecast is that Chromecast audio or the video as I have at present chromecast video in the only hdmi socket on my tv

I haven't tried the 9.1 but I'll definitely see if I can get my hands on it. I think the big thing for me will be the $1000 price tag, the 5.1 may be the better value.

Rear speakers will always be better if you want a serious home theater but for a soundbar it delivers.

I upgraded from the JBL 2.1 and can't believe the actual soundbar from the 2.1 is way louder than the one included on the 5.1, hence the 2.1 cost about 200$ and the 5.1 is 500$. The only good thing about the 5.1 is the Subwoofer! The 2.1 maxes out the volume at 50 while the 5.1 at 32... huge disappointment... im going to try out the 3.1 from JBL see how that performs.
