We compare 6 high-performance soundbars from 6 of the biggest names in home audio - Sonos, JBL, Bowers & Wilkins, Sony, Samsung, and Sennheiser. We discuss the high notes of each soundbar, and we will award bonus points to the bars that include a subwoofer plus other cool features. Our list of the best high-performance soundbars is based on price and features that complement both music and home-theater applications including Dolby Atmos surround sound. The soundbars we’ll be comparing today are the new Sonos Arc, JBL Bar 9.1, Bowers & Wilkins Formation Soundbar, Sony HT-ST5000, Samsung HW-Q90R Harman Kardon soundbar, and last but not least, the Sennheiser AMBEO.

Keep in mind that not all of these soundbars come bundled with a subwoofer, but we’ll be sure to point out the ones that do. This is something to consider when thinking about how much you want to spend. All 6 of these soundbars have some important features in common. For example, HDMI ARC connection-types, multiroom-support, voice-assistant features, and with the exception of the Bowers & Wilkins Formation soundbar, there’s Dolby Atmos surround-sound for the most realistic 3D soundstage available. With Dolby Atmos, speaker drivers direct the sound upwards towards the ceiling where the sound then bounces back down to you. This allows you to experience the sound of a helicopter flying above you with true 3D sound. If a helicopter is hovering above the screen, you’ll hear the sound of the helicopter’s rotor blades right above you. When the helicopter lands, you’ll hear and feel the sound travel back down to your level just like in real life. The more Dolby Atmos speakers a soundbar has, the more holographic the experience will be. Add the subwoofer, and you will feel the impact of the helicopter’s landing.
“ARC” (which is short for “audio return channel”) is a technology that makes setting up your new soundbar with TVs quick and simple. “eARC” (which is short for “enhanced audio return channel”) is the “enhanced” version of HDMI ARC that enables true Dolby Atmos with newer TVs. It’s important to note that you will not get true 3D Dolby Atmos surround sound without a TV that features the newer “eARC”. However, all of the soundbars will still use the Atmos speakers for great effect even if your TV doesn’t have the latest and greatest eARC HDMI. Controlling one of these premium soundbars isn’t limited to just your TV’s remote control though. For older TVs that don’t allow you to see the benefits of HDMI ARC or eARC, hands-free remote controls with the most popular voice assistants will let you control your soundbar with your voice or from your phone or a tablet too.
Adding any soundbar to your TV watching for movies, shows, sports or music adds so much to the experience. All of them will enhance movies, gaming, and music compared to the thin sound coming out of a flat-screen TV. So, you really can’t go wrong with any of these soundbars, but each one will perform slightly differently in every room. So, if you have any questions regarding which one would be best for your room, feel free to reach out to us over the phone, chat with us on audioadvice.com, or stop into one of our Raleigh or Charlotte North Carolina showrooms.

@@jpxx6674 i have the 9.2.4, in my br,lol. I like it ,the dialogue is much clearer than the 200$ vizio sb i had before, but music sounded better on the vizio,i watch a ton of movies, the newer ones with dolby atmos, and even older blurays soon great, you dont benifit as much with older dvds with lesser audios. I guess the bottom line, was it worth the money? Not 100 % sure, have not had it that long, and 1400 is a lotta cake, for me anyway. The one u mention is considerably cheaper. Based on all my research,i thought this my best option,i have it hooked to an lg c9 oled, which compliment each other well. Ive had a few issues where sound may not be producing during playback with a 4k player,or casting from a phone. But just turning the tv off for a few seconds, usually fixes it easy enough. I was concerned about the firmware update but mine came ready to go.vizio has a atmos bar for around 600 i think, which may be better for music, with black friday approaching, may get a better deal if you wait? Let me kno ,how ya make out. Nakimichi 4.5 stars

We've owned the 9.1 for over a week and can officially say for $999 this is one of the best surround set ups for the money. Crisp sound, clean dialog, deep resonating bass and accurate spatial sound. We had purchased the Sonos Arc surround set originally and loved it however when I visited a friend and heard the JBL I decided to take the Sonos back and picked up the JBL. I can say that the Sonos set may have a slight edge in some areas but in our opinion no were close to Justify the extra $800.

Greetings Robin! I appreciate your point that this was a super positive comparison. A few points I should have made. First, these are all simply best of breed in terms of soundbars, so these are the ones that really stand out. The second point is that for every review we do, there are dozens of products we don't put out videos on. In other words, we simply don't waste people's time with reviews and comparisons on products that we don't believe in. The third point is that our individual reviews are where we dive deeper into any of the negatives if there are any to call out.

No soundbar in this world sounds better than a set of high quality home theater system. If you really care about audio quality, you have enough space, and you do not mind speaker wires & an av receiver, go with the Klipsch.
Soundbars have gotten much better recently. They are so hot, mainly because of the simplicity and space saving that they provide. Most soundbars are good with movies, but they struggle with music.
If you don't want to do wiring, or you do not have enough space for 5+ speakers, a subwoofer, and an av receiver, or that you move alot, you will not go wrong with any of these soundbars.
The laws of physics always stand. Soundbars are small, so they can't move as much air as floorstanding speakers do. The true Dobly Atmos experience happens with down firing atmost ceiling speakers. These soundbars depend on sound reflection, so they can never sound as good as ceiling Atmos speakers.

@@peternystrom921 Thanks, Peter. When demoing soundbars like the JBL Bar 9.1, keep in mind that Room Calibration REALLY matters. Bars like the JBL Bar 9.1, Sonos Arc, and the Sennheiser AMBEO all have room calibration and correction to make sure the sound coming out of the bar is specially customized for the unique properties of your room. Most large consumer electronics retail outlets operate inside of a large building that also focuses on selling TVs, cameras, etc, which means they generally don't have a good room to demonstrate the Dolby Atmos effect, optimally. This is one of the reasons why we conduct our reviews at home or in an optimal room at one of our Raleigh or Charlotte, NC locations. This ensures we are getting a true sense of the soundbar's performance in the natural ergonomic habitat the product was designed for. If we don't like how it performs, we don't waste your time by reviewing it : ) Long story short, room calibration means the soundbar will perform differently depending on the space and whether or not it is calibrated for the unique properties of that space. Either way, we hope this information is helpful!
