Pentatonix won the third season of SingOff in 2011. That was also my introduction to them. Right around the fifth episode, by my wife and sister-in-law. They were fans of SingOff, and they did one of those things where they insisted I had to hear these guys. They were great. So I have been hearing them for maybe 13 years now. I have had numerous people tell me about them, and send me videos of them. I like how Kevin showed up the day they played theor first song. They had less than a day to find their mix. Were it not for the fact that Kevin has perfect pitch, he might not have worked in during that first performance.

Avi’s solo music is something definitely worth checking out!!!! Change On The Rise is an absolute classic of his and it showcases all parts of his voice, but he also recently had an album (his first studio album that is) come out may 20, and the title track off that album (Floating On A Dream) would also be great to look at. He Don’t Love You Right also seems to be a fan favorite from it too. Glad to see someone else ogling at Avi!!

Acapella was on the ascendancy well before there was a Pentatonix. They emerged in the 3rd season of The Sing Off! so the concept preceded 2008. Around that time there was a series about college acapella competitions with Deke as one of the colleges coaches (note: he was involved in the Perfect Pitch movies as well as The Sing Off!). I date the ascendancy of acapella from that series reflected in Pitch Perfect then The Sing Off! which produced PTX. Home Free was active before PTX. Also there was the Swingle Singers starting in the late 60's and still going (doing classical music acapella on the radio).

In 2009 NBC started a show called "The Sing Off" which Pentatonix won the 3rd season, and Home Free won season 4. But acapella compitions like in the movie Pitch Perfect were a thing since back in the 1890s..... but as of PTX winning pushed acapella into the main stream music world, and helped launch CZcams in to a major player in music distribution. But it is funny that PTX was given a Grammy for this which was actually a special rewrite of the category of instrumental to include acapella by name to make sure no one could say it was a mistake. The won 2 more Grammys after that, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy which is no words at all, and in country duo catagory with Dolly Parton for Jolene. So have a good time becoming a Pentaholic(super fan) just like you are a Home Fry for Home Free.

I first ran into a capella in (I *think*) the mid-1990s, with The Swingle Singers (now changed to The Swingles). They're a much larger group, more of a choir, out of England, who specialize (or specialized - I'm not sure about their recent releases) in classical music. They don't stick to just a capella, but they have some beautiful a capella covers of classical instrumental music, Bach springs to mind. I bought a couple of their albums, way back when.

Yes! Peter Hollens is the YT king of layering recordings to make a chorus of himself. Pentatonix never layers recordings because they want to reproduce their music live on stage. • @margretrosenberg420
    @margretrosenberg420 Před rokem

Jen, Pentatonix began with the trio, Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch, who all went to the same high school in Arlington, Texas. Mitch and Kirstie met when Kirstie was 8, I believe, and became good friends. Mitch and Scott met when Scott was 10 (again, I believe - I'm not certain of the age details from their childhood) and became good friends. Kirstie and Scott met when they were both 14, and became good friends.
Kirstie and Scott were in the same class in high school, with Mitch one year behind them. They were all involved in community theater, and all joined the school's choir. Additionally, these three formed a trio which sometimes performed with the choir, or on local television. It was named "The Trio" (they've gotten better with names since).
Scott and Kirstie graduated in 2010 and each went off to college (different colleges), basically waiting for Mitch to graduate. At the time there was a television show named _The Sing-Off_ where a capella groups could perform. They'd do numerous presentations all season long, and at the end of the season the winning group would receive $200,000 and a recording contract. So Scott had a dream of The Trio going to L.A. and appearing on _The Sing-Off,_ and he managed to talk the other two into it.
But then they found out that the minimum size band allowed on _The Sing-Off_ required five members. Ben Bramm, a friend of Scott's and one of the arrangers and coaches employed by _The Sing-Off,_ suggested that they'd do well to add a bass and a beatboxer, and recommended Avi, whom he knew from the amateur a capella community, as the bass. Avi agreed (even though he'd been offered a job as a bass in a professional opera company - do we see Scott's considerable persuasive skills at work again, or was Avi's heart truly in a capella rather than opera?). For a beatboxer they looked on CZcams and found a channel with a guy demonstrating his skills at something he called "celloboxing," which is beatboxing while playing the cello. That was Kevin.
Mitch had to skip his high school graduation ceremony to audition for _The Sing-Off,_ and Kirstin and Scott dropped out of college. They appeared on the show throughout its third season (2011) and eventually won. The videos are all available online, and are well worth watching. They range from cringe-worthy (dancing badly to songs that didn't need dancing) to spectacular.
The producers were aware that Mitch and Scott are both gay, and they *didn't* want that to come out on their family-friendly show, so they made some really stupid (IMO) decisions about how to prevent that from happening. The biggest one was based on their belief that Mitch's high range was effeminate and their fear that if Mitch were allowed to fully display his range it would lead to the revelation that he's gay. So they made a rule, which applied only to season 3, that each group had to have a designated lead singer who would *always* be their lead, and they told Pentatonix that Scott had to be their designated lead. This rule resulted in poorer performances from the other groups, and did, indeed, succeed in preventing Mitch from displaying his high range except as part of the harmonies, where people could conclude that they were hearing Kirstie.
But Pentatonix found ways to push back against the rule. They'd perform a medley of songs from a female artist, for instance, where Kirstie *had* to be one of the leads. As Avi and Kevin began to be noticed by the judges they began increasing the stage presence of Avi and Kevin, even going so far as to give them a delightful duet in their 11th performance. Also from the 11th performance they did a mash-up of "Since U Been Gone" and "Forget You," which they presented as a break-up argument between Scott and Kirstie, which required both Scott and Kirstie as leads.
This all came to a head with their 12th performance, the last one before the winner would be picked. In this one, the judges picked a song for each group, and the group had a week to come up with a performance. For Pentatonix the judges selected "The Dog Days Are Over," by Florence + The Machine.
Pentatonix was having a bad week. They were all exhausted, and Scott had a cold which was ruining his voice. Their dress rehearsal was an out of tune disaster. They were convinced that this performance would result in their losing the contest. There was just one thing they could salvage from the disaster - they could *finally* give Mitch his proper solo and introduce the world to the wonder that is Mitch Grassi's voice.
They had an excellent arrangement and had done some fantastic choreography, so they went with that and did their best, in order to give Mitch's solo the best possible setting, and then they absolutely nailed it. Scott's voice gave out entirely with the last note of the song, but it didn't matter - it wasn't official yet but they'd just won $200,000 and a recording contract.
And a week after they signed the contract the record label dropped them, saying that they didn't know how to market a capella groups, but this comment is already too long so we won't go into all that.
By the time they made their "Daft Punk Medley" they did have a new recording contract, with a minor label, but their operating budget was low. For this song it was $400.

The breath control required is extreme of course, but listen to this part at 11:36. Large intervals, uncomfortable range, difficult rhythm, staccato attacks, all in just one section. Live performances of this are pretty impressive, even though they often don't completely nail it, it's just such a difficult song.

Rockapella did the Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego theme song in the 90s, so that was much earlier than Pentatonix

There were several acappella hits in the 80s, but it was usually backed by either a drum kit or a drum machine. Notable songs include Afternoon Delight by Starland Vocal Band; Don't Worry Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin; The Lion Sleeps Tonight by The Nylons, and Only You by The Flying Pickets. There are also a number of spare arrangements with only one guitar by bands like Crosby, Stills and Nash and the Mamas and Papas that feel almost acappella. But I have to admit that if beatboxing was a thing when The Nylons were at the top of their game, it would have added some extra awesomeness.

I think PTX was the introduction to acapella to most of us...you should check their cover of Hallelluyah o Sound of Silence...those are amazing.
    As always...great vid 😇

Avi seems to be doing some of the beat boxing here, and the push of breathes for the wind sounds in this video, and i think he does something similar in PTX's cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. Kevin kills it though

This isn't true. They spent $400 on props and filmed the video in the kitchen (the audio was in a closet)... but purely because their scheduled studio time fell through. It was professionally filmed and edited, though, by Fifgen Films, for significantly more than $400.
Also, pretty sure Starships was their first "real video". And their early non-official videos were the ones shot on an iPad 😉

If you enjoy the way they handle those intervals, you should check out their version of Gold by Kiiara (it's an Avi one too), I couldn't see it in the playlist so I don't think you've reacted to it. Also, Valentine is interesting, too.

This was turned into an arrangement for marching band! The French Army Band played it for their president and the former US president back in 2017.

Thank you for giving Kevin the love he deserves!! 💜 Plus, next time you watch this, pls note that they almost never blink!! Only Kirstie blinks a few times. And I know those contacts were very irritating to their eyes. They bothered Kevin so badly that he ended up just having to wear the sunglasses instead!!

I really wish that someone would react to the OG a cappella group Stright No Chaser(formed in 1996 and still touring). They are well known for their comedy version of 12 Days of Christma, Who Spiked the Eggnog as well as covers like Marvin Gaye by Charlie Puth.
