STOP LOSING FISH! How to put two floppers on a spear + tuning a flopper

  • This video may not be for everyone but if you're serious about spearfishing you will want to know how to tune your flopper or barb properly so you don't lose fish unnecessarily. In this video I'm using a solid 2.5mm tungsten carbide drill bit. I've tried other cobalt & titanium bits and none will do the job like a solid carbide bit so don't waste your time. I'll go through the method I use to drill a spear to add an extra flopper or to cut down longer spears that may have been bent which can then be used on a shorter speargun.

    For those without a metal lathe to make a holding jig. You can use a block of wood. For the set screw drill a hole and epoxy a nut in it.

    It is allways nice to see how the speros act and prepare their gear around the world. The square gide for holding your spear is a very clever hack!
    Here I n Mediterranean this kind of spears with distance between the floppers are not very popular. Instead we prefer double floppers but at the same pin.

    Good as always. It’s interesting that in the 50’s and 60’s all spears had 2 floppers, sometimes on the shaft and sometimes paired on a screw on head . These were useless as they were heavy and often spun off a gyrating fish. Some of us favoured custom made long pranger heads. These were very effective on quite large fish provided you hit the lateral line or head. Keep up the good work I look forward to seeing your new videos

    My own tip to never let flopper pass closed through fish is to point the end tip of the flopper upwards from the shaft (raise it above the shaft, 2mm are enough). This way even if the flopper is in closed position it will open either on fish scales or internals.
    Also if you fish close to rocks and caves, fish that tend to hug the walls like groupers, flopper should be as close as possible to spear tip.
    This allows the flopper to open, as the distance between the rock and fish is very little.

    Been making my own floppers for a while since im broke and you cant find these kind of stuff here. you simply go to the local store where they sell kitchen supplies and look for stainless steel "utensils" the cheapest stuff you can find. the handles are shaped like a flopper and you simple cut the handle off and squeeze it against the spear then mount the "flopper" and spear togheter in the vise and drill them all at once so the holes line up. no need to mind the thickness of your spear since it will shape itself after the spear when you squeeze it in the vise.
    You take a cutter and cutout a lil slot in the top so it can fold out properly.
    floppers for 0.1-0.2 dollar each.
    And to everyone... get a drillpress best investment in your life if you ever gonna make something yourself. even the 80-100 dollar once makes your life so much easier.

    Another ripper vid! Some gems in this one! Ive been meaning to get a jig made for some time. Do you just centre the square bar in a 4 jaw chuck for the spear hole and then just very carefully mark and drill the perpendicular pin hole? Theres no room for error on small stuff like this! I'd like to make a similar jig for drilling barrels(handle and muzzle pin holes)

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  Před 5 lety +1

      That’s basically what I did. Use the four jaw chuck and turn the ends flush, then drill the centre hole, mark with a scribe and set square the top. I also have hardened silver steel inserts in the top of the jig for the drill bit guides.

    i have a similar story. when i was a biginner, i was at an offshore reef spearfishing with my experienced brother. he pointed out these 3 folden trevalley, and the biggest one would have almost been a metre long. i dove into line with them and put a shot into the biggest one. the spear went bullseyeinto the centre of the fish and 40cm through the fish, but the flopper didn't open, just sat there, and the fish bolted off with nothing at all holding it back

    Super cool video the more i get into spearguns the more technical and picky i am becoming also LoL but I still dont understand how going through the fish pops the flopper open?

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  Před rokem +1

      Inertia of the shaft slowing down rapidly by either hitting the fish or reaching the end of the shooting line opens the flopper.

      @@DanielMann That is common sense now that you explained it in baby talk to me :) i have 3 spearguns and none of the shaft floppers stay open so im gonna get right on it!!! THANK YOU DANIAL MANN AND YOUR INVITED TO COME SPEARFISH IN THE USA WITH ME SOME DAY IF U WANT? Do bullsharks bother you?

    What type of rope are you using as a flat line. Want too buy 500' or so.
    Loose no ends line only.
    Thanks Dave
