Why ITALY is dangerous for spearfishing | The Heel of the Boot, Puglia
Vložit

- Moving on from Sicily we land in the heel of the boot in Italy - Puglia. An area known for its produce, beaches and rocky coastline. Puglia is busy in the summer and that means loads of boats on the water which have no idea what they are doing....
As always, the Mediterranean is a difficult place to catch fish but I finally get into the groove a bit more and get some modest catches for dinner.
Stay up to date!

Nice trip and very nice video mate!
The Dentex where small and didnt really want to get close!
Your dives where good though and you are becoming a true Med spearo with tasty fish for your table each time!
Keep enjoying the true life and thanks for sharing it with us!
Take care man!
Thanks Dimos! Best training ground in the world, loving it!
This is really near my area, if you ever come back we do spearfishing and we could bring you with us on our boat, it's really bot a good idea to dive without a boat people just pass above you.
@@scarface7859 Where are you, Scar Face? We are near to Marina di Novaglie and Santa Maria di Leuca??
I live in Spain it is imposible even with float it’s incredible and it fuckes Ure apnea
The Mediterranean is overfished
In the summer it's even worse, especially in countries like Greece where you can rent a motorboat up to 25hp with no licence and zero experience - and the when the clueless tourists rent the boat, they tell them literally nothing other than don't wreck the prop. Dive float? They don't even know what that is. I had rental boats pass 1 meter from my head a million times, and they were waving at me with a smile on their face, even making a video of me, not realizing they almost killed me.
What the heck! People are dangerously ignorant
I am in New York where everyone who has a license to drive a car can drive a big boat. No separate maritime driver license or classes needed. This is infuriating.
The sailboat, the driver looked so distracted. His only excuse is that he had the sun rising in front of him.
I am diving in Greece and I can 100% confirm this...! It is strange to me how accidents don't happen more often...It was just a few weeks ago a 15yo kid got hit and lost his arm...
Same in Croatia. I've had people drive straight at me to check out my float. I only fish in very shallow water because of them, and if I do dive further from shore I always swim back up along the bottom so I surface by the shore...
not up to 25 but even up to a 100+hp speed boats and no license.
The problem with having a floater in Croatia is that people on jet skis that don't know better see them as marks to race around and aim to turn around them when showing off or racing
I’ve heard of this problem 😡
In Australia too
The beauty of your content nearly balances the jealousy it engenders. Much respect for your ability to plan and execute a career path that meshes so well with your passions.
beautifully said
my thoughts as well.
Boats are no joke. I was recently hit by a panga who didn’t see my float. His bow hit my shoulder and skeg struck my arm. I should have lost my arm (or worse) but by Gods grace didn’t get touched by the prop! A badly bruised forearm is, in my opinion, a true miracle.
I’m glad you are safe and I love seeing the reality of spearing in the Mediterranean! Thanks for bring us along on your adventure!
That sounds horrific man, glad you’re okay now though!
I spearfish and also was the owner of a fishing boat until some years ago. From my experience those floats can be extremely hard to spot when you're navigating with the sun in your eyes. Also it only takes a weak breeze that moves the surface of the water to make it even harder. I always take that into account when I'm diving near dawn or dusk.
That can be. But when if you don’t notice it until you’re THAT close there’s no excuse. When you’re that close and never appear to make any effort to get wider of it at all. And then don’t even make any kind of apologetic hand gesture to the the diver you almost killed, you’re just an idiot.
@@youretotallyrightbut463 I think you're missing the point. The sun can obfuscate those little floats until the bow of the boat hides it from the driver (who is sitting lower than the bow, nearly 15 meters behind the point at which he or she loses sight of the water under the boat).
It's not a good excuse (crew should be spotting in tough lighting), but I also would never dive with such a tiny flag buoy. I prefer the large circle floats, myself.
the boat noises drive me crazy all the time🥲
I am constantly tweaking under the water thinking I am gonna get run over
Unbelievable. I had to push a boat off coming up to the surface last Thursday(3 days ago). Kept diving but I was off a bit throughout the entire day. Got lucky.
wow I never see a British guy spearfishing that good in the Mediterranean , with this good knowledge in mediterranean Spearfishing habitat , BRAVO !!
Cracking Vid Again!! makes my day every time i see one of your videos pop up and its awesome to have watched your diving progression from when you were filming the world championships a few years ago to now.
That was 2016… thanks for sticking around 💪
Great to see your videos back up on the tube. Can't wait for more. And no matter what when you get food for your table it's always a good day
Enjoyed your video very much. Your dive trips are interesting. Keep them coming. The fish looked delicious. Take care and wishing you the best from New Jersey 🇺🇸 😎👍
Been absolutely loving the Mediterranean videos, pretty cool seeing how often you're seeing dentex now! 🙂
It gets better later in the trip…
I definitely wouldn't have been as polite to that boat driver.
When he said, “looking in holes is the big key to success.” I felt that on an emotional level 🥲
I aways look forward to your videos mate! Thanks for the upload
The videos are like little vacation trips! Thank you for taking me!
Always well produced and good content!
Love the video Daniel!! You guys are awesome 😁
Same thing with boats here, total disregard for safety, they pass above you and your float, jetskis sail towards your float at full speed to "check you out"...
That Dentex glitch was amazing!
I thought it was awesome too 😁
Very nice video Daniel! We face the same hazards here in Croatia during the summer time. The only way to avoid boats and jet skis is to start hunting just before the sunrise because early morning is the only time when there are no boats. Oratas tend to come and check you out just outside of shooting range so next time it happens try these two tricks... start scratching the stone with your glove or even better, try retreating back with your body while still holding your gun aimed straight at orata. If you do it properly, oratas will interpret that as a non-threatening behavior and come closer.
Thanks for the tips Luka, they are a very smart fish. I think even raising my eyebrows in my mask would cause them to disappear 🤣
You never clean the fish before cooking? You do like asians cook.
Enjoy your time in Poland. Cheers from Poland ;). Love your vids, great content !!!
Very cool video. Dive safe. Thanks for sharing. Cheers 🍻
Geez that was a close call, my worst nightmare!! Nice catch & vid
Fantastic trip, video and tasty dishes. Thanks for sharing. You have to taste our waters.
Glad your near miss was just a miss! I've been doing a lot of lake diving lately, and the jet skiers and boats pulling skiers and tubes are totally clueless, ignoring my flags and floats. Have to keep head on a swivel at all times.
Great shot on the sargo as it turned and pulled away!
great vid. thanks man...peace out
Nice video as always ! The scapon fish (Scoepaena scrofa) is a particular and very noble scorpion fish.
Great catches, nice to see such clear water. Great aim and great cooking
Love your vids and your storytelling, Daniel. If you ever want to go spearfishing in Croatia, let me know😀 since you are doing the Mediterranean tour! I know some of the best spearos. Keep up the excellent work!
Great video..THNX!
Thanks man I love your videos!! I would love it if you came back to malta as im maltese! Looking forward to your future videos!
Nice video as always ! The scapon fish (Scoepaena scrofa) is a particular and very noble scorpion fish. Unlike the smaller scorpion fish, they can get quite big (2/3kg) and taste amazing as you experienced !
Really dope and genuine content with all the videos 🤙
Although I'm not able to do spearfishing I enjoy watching spearfish videos especially yours, wasn't easy to catch fish there but at least you got your dinner 🙂
Pretty cool video and it is amazing to see someone catching fish in Italy but Never Dive Alone!!! peace in every breath :D
The med is very tough spearfishing especially around Italy, Spain and Greece. Well done for getting what you did mate🏆👍🏻
Why is it so hard? Not much fish? A lot of boats?
@@jakeaffleck3307 It is not hard. It is quite safe actually, with no sharks. But it is overfished. No fish left.
Daniel! I haven’t watched this yet but you said to leave a nice comment on the Noob Spearo podcast to support you.
This is it.
You are a great inspiration to me and my girls. We love your channel and you are a gorgeous man. Apparently you do look like some famous actor person- I can’t see it but the girls do.
Please keep up the good work and thanks for the inspiration to dive everywhere.
We love you Mann!
Hey Michael, thank you for stopping by, appreciate it!
Nice vid Daniel. Thanks for informing about those close by boat. Maybe it will make some impact and will add some education for people on boats.
Got surprised when you said Poland as that's where I live but it's not for spearfishing but wedding 😅
Hope you will enjoy your time there
Amazing.. What a blue water.
I feel you! Have been to mediterranen sea of Spain a week ago and getting fish there is a challenge.. the fish are so shy and careful..
Hi Daniel good to see you enjoyed salento cheers
Another great video just wanted to thank you for getting me into spearfishing, unfortunately I'm in the North of Ireland so getting out is rare but it's still lovely to see what you get up to for the future
Cheers Philip and best of luck for the rest of summer.
I saw that wedding photos and it’s funny that you were like 100km from my home, and I am now just 50km from your home! Small world mate
Love the spearfishing vids in the med
Great video and nice catches. And never forget, ALWAYS with a diving partner
Howzit brother Daniel 💪very big fan of yours 🤣🤣ive legit seen all your videos..youre such a boss !!keep the good work up ..
Cheers Tyler!
Nice vid! Mediterranean + summer = danger. I have a lot of spots I never dive in summer, due to boat traffic. You can't relax, and if you can't relax during spearfishing...
Man You are Nailing it. Keep it up.🐟🐟🐟
Man this seems sketchy , sorry don't trust the , numbers on You tube. Is this real.
We get those mullets in Hawaii as well. We call em Weke Ula (I'm 94% sure LOL) Love the vids Daniel! Helped me a lot in my journey and keeps the stoke high watching your epic adventures.
Good on ya, Dan!
12:01 my absolute favourite fish. You can even grill on charcoal it if it’s big. Absolute gem!
Great video Dan living a great life mate!
Someone has to do it!
hi daniel , the next country is australia , i watched on your ig story . keep the good videos
Man i was like 🤬wtf, a clueless boater! It's not just there it's everywhere, be safe, awesome video, be safe, maybe you should use two floats and two flags for the blind boaters! God Speed.
Great video always!
Thank you!
Sick video man
Good luck, a great video when you want to catch a Dante fish. If he is heading towards you, try not to move your eyes and not look at him so that he can rest assured that he will approach you with good luck. 👌👍

OMG Daniel in the GROTTO!!
That small tub you held up contained Capers in salt? The salt is to preserve them, you wash the salt and use the capers. It’s better than buying them in the vinegar preservative that they come in, that preserve flavour is hard to clear. A good vid. I did enjoy it. Thank you.
Never had that happen to me until this year. Was at 20 meters and heard a high revving engine heading straight for me. Decided to hold my breath for way longer then what I was comfortable with and saw it pass straight over me. If I didn’t decide to hold on it would have ended very badly. The guy got a lesson in some of the most explicit vocabulary in the English language.
That is super scary! Glad it ended well for you.
No one in particular,
I doubt he heard you, but as a means of venting it does make you feel better. . . .
Hey love the content as always. So when we are going to see you spearfiishing in Miami Florida
Very cool video Daniel, hope to see you spearfishing in the caribbean!
Insanely good quality video as always. Would make 10/10 IMBD.
Cheers Isaac 💪
Watching from Philippines 👍
Sup Daniel i love your videos keep it up bro
Thank you!
Another great video! Love following along as you travel around and dive! Quick question; after finding a potential spot (seen in person during a recce), would you consider sharing your process when it comes to reading a new dive site from Google maps/earth/navionics? Would love your input on what is the best sort of terrain to look for, what to avoid, etc and how you use Google maps/navionics etc when researching. Cheers!
I’ll have to make a video on this someday!
Great video mate still the most genuine spearo on youtube, spearing looks tough should be really able to kick ass if you ever bet back to oz.
Cheers Anthony, have been in NZ recently and now in Australia. Everything is too easy to shoot 🤪
Hey mate drop me an email if you are in the townsville area see if we can't find you something difficult to spear can probably guarantee about 2 meters of viz that makes it hard.
As italian i can confirm thist horrible situation. Even worst in summer with a lot tourist renting motorboat without any kind of experience and respect for other people.
The scorpion fish (nohu) is a TOP score here in Hawaii. Absolutely the best fish on the reef, in my opinion.
Super tasty, like lobster!
I live in England and can’t believe how much more packed and diverse our waters are compared with Italy from what I’ve seen on your videos. That’s mental. Who’d have thunk it. 😬
You never know if you never go.
nice catched Idol...
Congrats you have been selected among our shortlisted winners from our previous giveaway, Contact the number above ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^✅
Excellent shot on the first Sargo
Thank you 🙏🏻
Great video. We are lucky enough to live in Salento, the tip of the heel of the boot. I try my hand at spearfishing here and yes it is challenging. Your videos actually helped me get into spearfishing so it was especially poignant to see you down here! Where did you find it most rewarding around Puglia? We are based very near to Santa Maria di Leuca (the southernmost point). Thanks again!
I only got to dive twice but Porto Tricase was where I had most success.
People with their eyes painted on driving boats appears to be a cosmopolitan occurrrence. Even a kayak isn't visible enough some of the time.
Nice work on the goatfish plugging but that was mint!
Cheers Owen!
Hey Daniel, awesome video as always, I really enjoy your content, but I was wandering how do you pick fishing spots, what goes into picking it and what makes it a good spot?
I’m mostly looking for diveable depths, interesting features on the charts, accessibility from the shoreline and locations away from people.
@@DanielMann sorry if im bothering you, but what do you mean by interesting features on the charts? im new to spearfishing :)
Great video Daniel. In Italy people with boat don’t respect the distance and don’t pay attention around them. It’s very dangerous
I think it’s not just Italy, all places in the Mediterranean.
very nice, love to do spearfishing one day.
I'd like to see you go north again and go for some....HALEEEBUUUUUTTT!! 😁😁
Great vid! Can you share how you select diving spots using charts? Thanks!
If you take the flipper of your spears they become a lot easier to remove from the hull of boats that get too close, makes a good shark gun too
Yep, in Croatia it's absolutely mad during the summer, tourists rent a boat with 100-200hp and act like idiots 15m from the shore, it gets scary sometimes
lots of work for such small fish lol
you need to come to the Carrabin. nice video though i really enjoyed it
After seeing this I've decided I'm to going to get myself a huge flag which written in both languages! There is a popular snorkling area near me that's had to be surrounded by rope and buoys as so often boats will plow straight through it which will foul their prop and they are then severely fined.
I prefer to spear fish under my boat and I'll surface just by the ladder because some boaters are so dangerous.
I also like to go spearfishing at blacksea and i see a lot of scorpion fishes.I never bothered with cleaning them and i give them to my older neighbors but i heard the soup is delicious. And Mediterranean is amazing i tried spearfishing first time when i was 13 and i shot my first fish after 5 min. It’s full of amazing fishes. But the problem is constant tourist boats roaming around. You need to get up and check every 30 seconds if there is a boat coming. Now i’m a student in italy and hope i can go for a spearfishinf to south.Amazing catches 🔥
There are no fish in Italy any more it seems, that was dead ocean I was loooking at
scorfano or triglia are ideal for fish stew. with scorfano you can also make pasta sauce, fry some garlic and cherry tomatoes add chili and basil splash of white wine and drop you scorfano in. cook for 15/20 minutes take the fish off and add your pasta 🙂
Sounds perfect. In New Zealand we find some scorfano over 2kg 😳
@@DanielMann nice :-) it is hazardous to fish my mum ended up in hospital cause of its poisonous back spike.
Firstly - as always love the videos - HALLLIBOOOOOOOTTTTT - but I have a Question - when you do shore dives how do you change the GoPro batteries (also how do you stop the go pro strap not sliding off head when you dive). I do shore dives and wondering what the trick is to prevent the salt getting in there. Thanks and HALIBOOOOOTTTTTT
I usually pass the snorkel over the gopro strap, so in case it falls, it get caught by it. As to the battery, I put my camera in auto-shoot mode and auto-off after 30s. As soon as it turns on, it starts filming, so I just turn it on right before I dive, and stop the video when I resurface, it'll shutt off on its own. You need to keep fiddling with it, but I've learnt to use it like that whithout ever needing to take it off. I still use the old gopro 3 though, not really sure if the new ones work the same way. You still only get 90 mins of battery, but at least you're filming the good stuff only and not wasting footage
Exactly what he said ^
@@DanielMann I need to be honest, the snorkel trick I learned from one of your older videos :) Cheers and thank you for all your videos.
We all learn things from different people which is great. If it means one less person losing a GoPro in the sea, spread the word!
Summer in the med isn’t really very fishy because a lot of fish move to deeper water by mid july to august. Once the water cools down fish come back to the shore
Great video Dan, I'm further up near Porto recanati if there are any divers out here please reach out, its super difficult to get any fish in this part of the Med "maddonna"
" That pan full of fish looked delicious 👍👍🇺🇸 "
How wonderful that you and Hannah share passions that lend to shared adventure; wherever they may be in the world. Speaking of which, I hope you will one day make it to Hawaii for Ono and Ahi fishing 🎣. Cheers 🥂 for your videos; they are always refreshingly honest, creative, and inspiring. Stay safe in water!
Thanks Anton, I’m sure we’ll make it to Hawaii in the future.
I got screwed up mentally after a close encounter while freediving in Croatia. Boats are suppose to keep clear 200 m from shore... but they don't. I was about 30-50m from shore. I got almost warning because it rounded the cape I was diving on, really close and at full speed. I went for the surface fast because I did not have enough to wait a minute either. As I popped up it passed me at most at a 4-6m distance. The 5 people in the boat nearly snapped their necks clean off as they where quite surprised staring at me when they whipped past me. They where doing probably around 30 knots. My day was ruined because anger and shock got all mixed up bubbling inside me. I still get a uncontrollable sinking gut feeling just watching videos of divers at the seabed, seeing ships passing over. I just need a few strategic bobbing sea mines surrounding my dive site next time... for educational purposes of course. Croatian coast guard/police was not happy with me earlier in the same week. It was very shallow waters so I needed to be maybe 75m from land to get to 20m depth, I was freediving followi g a gang of scuba divers. The police/coast guard shouted at me to return to the dive boat... They got to the boat before me, where the proceeded to entangle the dive warning flag line into their propeller! Then the cheeky weirdos asked me to undo the damage they caused. I told them to turn off the engines because A.) the diesel exhaust fumes was pooling over the surface around the ship, basically killing me, B.) I'm not going anywhere near the propeller with the engine running. They argued that engine stays on as they might need to manouver on short notice. "Sir, your propeller is completely entangled with 40x turns of 8mm rope, you're not going anywhere, you deal with it then". As they saw me paddling away they turned off the engine not even 3 secs later. A few dips around the prop-shaft and some cutting with a knife and the kill joy police could be on their way. Geez, I have more horror stories from those 2 weeks diving in Croatia.
Great channel and video, although I have to mention to points: 1. the fish look waaay overcooked, 2. that's the very wrong gun to use in this case, that's why for this type in mediterranean we also have a 2nd small air speargun with a +3 points tip
Hi Daniel,
Sorry about the near miss, I would have thought that sailors would be a little more responsible.
Next time, can you tell us a bit more about what you look for on charts when picking dive spots, I’d be really interested to know.
Thanks for the vid. Keep diving everywhere.
Ali
Cheers Ali, I’ll have to do a video one day on finding new spots!
@@DanielMann Can’t wait! Enjoy Turkey btw ;)
Even from a slow moving sailboat it is hard to see small things that is low in the water when there is larger waves. When we was out sailing in a 28ft sailboat we several times almost hit people in kayak because they was really hard to see (did not see them until we was only maybe 60 - 30m distance). When there is waves things that is low in the water dissaper totally 50% of the time until you are really close. If the waves is large enough the wave pattern can lead to it being 100% hidden until almost hitting it if you are really unlucky when your sailboat is small.
Same experience here with spearfishing mostly in Sardinia, Italy. Never trust your dive float and flag alone! I even had people cruising by super close to my float on purpose to check if something interesting is happening around that float. Always listen for engine noise and check where its coming from! Hey but otherwise, you have two of my favorite species from the med on that plate (triglia and scorfano). Keep on diving everywhere and thanks for sharing it with us.
In open water certification they teach you not to rely on hearing to locate boats as the speed of sound in water is vastly different from the speed of sound in air (which is confusing to our brains). Can one really rely on their senses to detect such dangers, especially in reduced visibility?
Maybe use a scuba diving surface marker buoy attached on a double ended clip or something to your buoy with a pound lead attached to the bottom😂 you get ones that keep air inside and it only escapes through a dump valve that seals off
Congrats you have been selected among our shortlisted winners from our previous giveaway, Contact the number above ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^✅
that looked like a nice deep dive. How deep are you comfortable solo diving without risking a shallow water black out?
hi bro, loving your videos, thanks ! what is also (very) dangerous is to freedive/spearfish alone :) let your followers know it, cheers from marseille where you're most welcome =)
