Almost Arrested by Ski Patrol at Whitetail Resort

  • Almost arrested by ski patrol after going down a closed slope.
    On multiple occasions we viewed groups of 3-4 people going down the closed trail, exhibition, and were confused on the status of the trail. After asking the dude at the top and seeing at least 15-20 people go down the trail, we determined that it was ok to go down, but apparently not lmao.
    enjoy.

    Two thoughts. The run was clearly closed - and it was apparent why because this not so great skiier could barely make it down. Also, this would be a simple trespassing situation (they would take your pass and ask you to leave) and the only reason the cops would come is if you refused to leave and even then they would only issue you a trespass.

    @humanbeing2420 Před 2 měsíci +2

    If a run is closed, don't ski on it. The resort always has good reasons for closing a run, regardless of how it may appear to you. A run might appear to have enough snow to be skied, but that might be a dusting over rocks and grass. They know better than you because they're observing conditions 24-7 and they know how much snow has fallen and where. And even if it does actually have enough snow to be skied, they may still close it for other reasons - they may want to make more snow on that run before it's skied or they may be about to use the run for race training, etc. In any event, it's their mountain and they make the rules. You pay to ski there subject to those rules.

    Good thing the two other skiers you almost ran into in the space of 5 minutes managed to dodge you. I'm loving the enthusiasm but you should take skiing a bit more seriously before you hurt someone or yourself. Not trying to be mean but skiers like you are a danger to everyone around them and with the speeds involved and the large blades strapped to your feet it's very easy to break bones, paralyse someone or worse. I was at Whitetail the same day; it was so crowded that it became dangerous. The ski patrol guy is also full of it - I grew up skiing on the West Coast and they would NEVER waste the cops’ time over someone skiing on a closed trail (the nearest cops would be over an hour away at most west coast resorts). At most, they’ll pull your ticket for the day for skiing out of bounds, or maybe your season’s pass for three infractions. My brother has gotten into some trouble in the past for that sort of thing. Not encouraging going on closed runs by any means, but I’m not sure why the ski patrol didn’t just ask for your parents’ contact info when he realized it was a group of kids.

    The only reason you would be popping out of your bindings like that is because either your DIN is set below what it should be or you are riding much too aggressively for your skill level. If DIN is set properly, the only time you should ever be ejected is when making mistakes riding the terrain or falling.

  • @humanbeing2420
    @humanbeing2420 Před 2 měsíci

    I think the patroller is wrong about PA law. PA law probably provides that if you're injured while skiing on a closed run, you won't succeed if you sue the resort. That's different from saying that it is "illegal" to ski on a closed run. I doubt that police are authorized to arrest skiers who ski on closed runs. But still, no one should ski on closed runs. That run was clearly and unambiguously marked closed, regardless of whether you saw people on it or what you were told by the lift attendant (who has no authority over terrain and should have told you to ask ski patrol).

    This is stupid. You had to ski around a rope that had a "Closed" sign, and you claim the lift operator said the run was maybe open? Whitetail is a joke now days, people buy that season pass so on every cold decent day the crowds flock to the ski area. Even on weekdays. And with the milder winters in the Mid-Atlantic, your window to ski is maybe max 8 weeks. Lines for everything. Not a great experience.

  • @bmorecarefulinbmore
    @bmorecarefulinbmore Před 3 měsíci

    Grew up skiing whitetail and now live in Co. now. Vail resorts makes you take a class to get your pass back after you get caught ducking ropes. Also, it's technically illegal to ski closed terrain in Colorado and is punishable by a fine up to $1,000, so the patroller was kinda right. That said, I've never heard of any mountain actually calling the cops to enforce it. Usually its a talking to, or if its avy terrain they pull your pass for a week or two and send you on your way.
