Best Poached Eastern Skiing Tree Run 2019 - Busted on Undercut

  • Watch a raw un-edited vid as we rip a closed tree-run (Undercut) on a pow-pow day, then get fully busted for it by the ski patrol. It's a little long, but worth the wait. Hilarious lecture and consequences enforced by the SP at the end of the tree-run. In the end, and despite the consequences, we just keep on skiing. Karma balancing out for behaving ourselves during the lecture?

    In Europe you can go off piste all you like, but it's at your risk and if you get hurt, you better have a plan on how to get help. People get helicoptered off the mountain quite often. You have to get special insurance to cover you for off piste skiing due to the increased risk. It's hilarious that in the US it's a "serious" offence in a ski resort.

      Even further north in the United States, and pretty much all of the west coast never give you shit for going into the woods, they just have policies that they aren't responsible for any accidents or injuries you may get, and if you need to be rescued off piste then you could be on the hook for paying for it. Only the far East Coast of the US have resorts that are universally known for not allowing tree skiing of any kind, and taking passes for the slightest transgression off their marked groomers... I've even had my pass pulled out here for going 5 feet off the trail in order to jump the berm back onto it like you always see people doing. I also lost my pass before for cutting between literally 3 trees to get from one groomer to another that were separated by less than 50 feet. You can go deeper into WV and find some resorts like Snowshoe that allow glade skiing, or go far enough north to hit Maine and Vermont where its basically the same as the West coast and nobody gives a shit as long as you don't sue after you go off the trail and get hurt. Just like you said, it's the most ridiculous rule ever, and as someone who loves tree skiing more than anything but lives on the East Coast, it's torture sometimes. You don't know the meaning of the word "patronizing" until you've had an East Coast ski patroller with 5 years of experience try to lecture you on how they are saving your life by not allowing you to do something as dangerous as skiing off the trail when you've spent 20 years doing exactly that in places where the ski patrol don't act like the fucking Gestapo

    That's the best condition I've ever seen Undercut in. I don't understand why they close glades when they're fresh powder. Loon was where I learned to snowboard, and i still hit it up at least once a year, but with the new expansion to South Peak the ticket prices are just absurd. That combined with the fact that it's like skiing through a shopping mall means that this might be the first year since I was a kid that I don't go to Loon.

      @SteveO3232 Před 2 lety +1

      They got their ski passes clipped. The passes are what the loft chair attends check to make sure you have paid for the day. There is always a date on them. Some lift attendants don’t even check the tickets. That’s why a lot of resorts have gone digital.
      Also, this lift could have been a mid mountain lift. As in, there’s no exit from this lift. Got to up, to go back down.
      Last thing, if you do get your ticket pulled, you are allowed to ski the mountain to get back to your vehicle. Some players are huge and it takes riding a few lifts to get from one side to the other.

      @@mrsmartypants_1 The patrolman said something about it needing another storm or two, and the skiers replied something along the lines of it being a little rocky. Perhaps it's to keep rental skiers from getting core strikes? It seems that this place does actually have designated tree runs and this would be one of them. It could be just the fact that if the trail isn't open it isn't being patrolled so no one would know if they get hurt. It's most likely just the resort covering their asses and reducing the likelihood of being sued. This is a common worry of smaller hills filled with less experienced skiers, and those who do know what they are doing pay the price as well unfortunately. I don't agree with it, but as a skier reduced to the 200ft hills of river valleys I see it quite a bit. Some patrolmen don't care but its really a crapshoot on whether you get a sub-par tree run, or get your pass taken away.

All the patrollers I have interacted with have been cool and are more interested in educating skiers rather than punishing them. It's also usually true that a roped off section is because of serious avalanche danger or snow too deep to ride safely. Weekend skiers often aren't aware of dangers like tree wells and terrain traps. Both of which are abundant on the PACNW volcanoes.

      because Americans are basically owned by insurance companies and these are stogies that enforce the stupid rules.

      True, but in Europe you also pay for ski patrol to take you out in a sled or chopper. They accept many credit cards.

    Won't be any snow in 20 years and you have to deal with these jokers? A lot of US resorts are on forest service land, which makes this kind of bs all the more repugnant.

      @@nickweldon9410 Interesting take. Entering closed terrain is illegal and it's closed not because the patrollers want to rain on your parade but usually for your safety(no base equals deadfall equals spiraling tib-fib fractures and no one wants to deal with that) East coast is one thing but in Colorado, patrollers are EMTs, usually explosive certified, trained to rescue you in an avalanche, they are experts in snow safety. Personally I wouldn't risk my pass or fines or safety on a bumped-up, dust-on-crust, green circle glade run. But hey that's just me.
