i ski in maine and atleast at my mountain ski patrol dont care if you duck a rope they just tell you its closed and let you go

There were a few times you almost run into other skiers, keep distance, keep both you and others safe.

I ski upstate NY and if caught ducking you only get a talking to and maybe a pass pulled for 2 weeks. That's what lift conversations and my buddies told me.

If it says closed it's closed. It's closed for a reason. Respect the resort.

I think the patroller is wrong about PA law. PA law probably provides that if you're injured while skiing on a closed run, you won't succeed if you sue the resort. That's different from saying that it is "illegal" to ski on a closed run. I doubt that police are authorized to arrest skiers who ski on closed runs. But still, no one should ski on closed runs. That run was clearly and unambiguously marked closed, regardless of whether you saw people on it or what you were told by the lift attendant (who has no authority over terrain and should have told you to ask ski patrol).

If a run is closed, don't ski on it. The resort always has good reasons for closing a run, regardless of how it may appear to you. A run might appear to have enough snow to be skied, but that might be a dusting over rocks and grass. They know better than you because they're observing conditions 24-7 and they know how much snow has fallen and where. And even if it does actually have enough snow to be skied, they may still close it for other reasons - they may want to make more snow on that run before it's skied or they may be about to use the run for race training, etc. In any event, it's their mountain and they make the rules. You pay to ski there subject to those rules.
