One tip I would add re: religious holidays in all Muslim countries, including the Maldives. Fridays are the main holiday of the week (like Sundays are in Christian countries), so that means Friday and Saturday are the weekend, and workdays are Sunday-Thursday. Ramadan, the month of fasting, is a holy time when Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, smoking, and swearing from dawn to dusk. In some Muslim nations, it is actually illegal to eat or drink in public during Ramadan, even if you're not fasting or not Muslim. However, Ramadan is not a holiday (it's like Lent, really)--people go to work and school while fasting. The real holiday is Eid-ul-Fitr which celebrates the end of Ramadan. Most schools will be off for a week or two--the last week of Ramadan is particularly holy, and Eid lasts for three days after Ramadan is over. The other big holiday is Eid-ul-Azha, which happens on the 10th day of Hajj (when Muslims perform pilgrimages to Mecca). Eid-ul-Azha is based on the Bible story of Abraham and Isaac, so if you're Jewish, Christian, or Muslim, you probably already know the story. Eid-ul-Azha is also celebrated for three days. So, most things are closed during that time as well, including schools, work, banks, and shops.

Restaurants have limited hours of operation. They are not open all day so you would need to plan accordingly
