I was born with a neural hearing loss; I am now 64 and have worn hearing aids most of my life. Hearing aids have changed so dramatically from my early school years in the 60's where they amplified everything - ARRRGHH, to early analogue type aids that were not particularly good or clear sounding to the now very clever digital aids. Some early digital aids suffered interference from shop lights, tv signals/displays etc but that is now not the case.
I am so used to wearing hearing aids that I don't notice them on BUT I know I certainly won’t hear sounds that I would otherwise hear with hearing aids on. Birds in trees are a classic, wind noise in trees, cars, automatic doors and people talking nearby along on their mobiles or with other people. Libraries can be surprisingly noisy too!
I most definitely wear my hearing aids for work, social things ( most times ), meetings/presentations, learning environments, movies and TV - basically when I need to hear people speak AND understand what they are saying and in-turn converse back with them. Other times, I have no need to wear them like at the gym or swimming, so I don't wear them. Sudden social interactions are a little problematic but I get by - lip read, hear some of what they are saying, body/facial cues etc.
Hearing aids are typically designed for speech only and are NOT 100% fool proof for listening to or playing music - I incidentally play guitar, piano and sing. Hearing aids are designed to typically compensate for excessive loud sounds ( protect your hearing ) in a 'music' listening environment by automatically lower the volume down that I absolutely hate. This is my MOST annoying thing/grief about hearing aids. I have read this can/may be addressed but I haven’t followed this up as yet.
One of the best things to modern hearing aids is Bluetooth connectivity to mobile phones - this is so, so good. Hearing aids have listening channels, at least four or more tailored for differing listening environments - coffee shop/restaurants, quiet rooms, windy outdoors.
I do get around without wearing hearing aids on BUT I do so knowing I won't hear everything around me and I consider my safety ( and others ) in doing so. I enjoy not wearing them when I want some solitude and quiet time in my own company and thoughts ... or maybe I have become that way, who knows. I am perfectly okay with wearing and NOT wearing my hearing aids.
Hope this helps people who may be getting hearing aids for the first time. I say do it as you won't regret it and just be PATIENT, it will take a little time, just don't give in.
I enjoyed your story and your video. Best of luck and enjoy life.

Spot on. It shocked me the first time I took my hearing aids out. I thought my ears were dead with them removed - it really shocked me. Great summary of how it is with and without hearing aids.

It’s just nice to be able to “hear” your surroundings. It’s almost as important as seeing what is going on around you. Just the sounds of noises in the home give evidence that the furnace, the refrigerator, and other appliances are actually working. Then step outside and listen to the wind in the trees, birds, insects. I can still hear some folks who speak loudly normally but miss a lot of women with soft voices. Music through my Bluetooth hearing aids is wonderful, especially the highs. Now to find newer aids that assist with speech. I still don’t understand my wife of 50 years unless she faces me and speaks up.

I wore my first hearing aid when I was 8 back in 75. Back then they were pretty basic so when I wore my first pair of digitals( I found out I was as deaf in my left ear as my right when I was 25), there was an amazing difference. So much more detail and depth to sounds. I remember hearing water tricking down into a grill by the roadside. The sound of hydraulics on the bus doors and even the sound of change being given to the driver, It was explained to me that as I'd never heard these sounds before, my brain wasn't used to them and would take about 6 months to work it all out., I had to learn where these new sounds were, what they were and how far away from me they were it took a while but yeah it was an interesting learning curve. I have been told I have no high tone hearing but the hearing aids lower those tones to enable me to hear them. As you say hearing aids aren't a cure but they do help to restore some of the sounds. The interesting thing is, I like taking my aids out as it's peaceful and I'm not bombarded with constant sounds. I wish you well on your journey with hearing aids.

Your video is so encouraging - Thanks for posting.. I recently started wearing Hearing Aids and all of a sudden I can hear birds singing and everyday sounds that I had forgotten existed. I can definitely relate to most of what you were saying. Sounds like dripping tap don't sound like I remember them. So yes, they don't restore the natural hearing ability.
Thanks so much for sharing this video -.so very useful

I have needed hearing aids for many years. First set I got I just hated. Bigger and clunkier than now. Then I got a pair about 6 years ago that was better, but mostly just magnified sound, so I had to switch programs to compensate for the situation. Last Fall I got a new pair, and was stunned at how loud they were. Was told to get used to it, as that was the level I should be hearing at. I mostly loved them, because phone calls could be directed straight to them, which makes it easier to hear on phone calls. However, when refrigerator would come on, or central air would come on, it was so horribly loud! I made appointment at another branch, got them adjusted, and fell totally in love!!! Sounds are so much more 'natural' sounding now that I forget I am wearing them and almost went to bed with them in at least four times now! I still can switch to party mode if in a large group, and that works great! Also, my old ones used batteries that had to be changed out weekly, and now these batteries recharge by Bluetooth nightly! So much better!!! I wear Rexton brand.

Welcome to the club of hearing Lose. My hearing lose started when I was in the military. Now 50+ years later I have different types of hearing problems. I have PTSD (military), I had a TBI Traumatic Brain Injury 🤕. Both have the same symptoms ( not sure what symptoms are involved at times) they affect my hearing one way or another. Oh yeah I also have voice recognition problems.I am rated at 60 percent hearing lose. So with the loss of hearing and voice recognition I am screwed up were I just can't tell when someone is talking with me. Since I can't tell I usually don't pay attention to sounds that are people trying to talk with me. They end up getting mad that I am ignoring them. I end up trying to explain what problems I have hearing voices/ words. Most will try yelling and I have to tell them that I hear them but can't understand them. I inform them certain words sound like noise to me. They usually still don't have any idea what I'm talking about. It took me a while before I was able to understand myself. A lot has to do with my PTSD and TBI. Don't ask as I am still trying to figure it out myself. As l am 71 years old I will probably never quit understand. Take care and don't drive your husband crazy 🤯. He has to be a very patient person willing to stand by you. I have my appointment with my audiologist later this month for the fitting of my first my hearing aids. I have had issues all my life with various surgeries but have avoided wearing hearing aids. I’m 60 now and have finally accepted that I need them so am both a little sad that I need help but also looking forward to hearing things that I have been missing for so many years.

I like taking my hearing aids out occasionally. Under certain conditions I am more comfortable not wearing them. Like you, I was initially shocked at how much I could hear. But back home I quickly realised that some sounds are very intrusive when I want to just sit in my chair and read a book. One noisy thing is the fridge. Another the humidifier. Neither of these do I hear at all without the hearing aids. So for me, it's a relief not to wear them. Also, when I'm working at my PC writing software, having no extraneous noise helps concentration enormously. But it's when I'm in an environment like shops or the library that the hearing aids really become essential, because for years understanding people was difficult if I couldn't see their faces and read their lips. The pandemic in this regard was especially challenging, as practically everyone wore a face mask. I wish I had had the hearing aids back then. I've only actually had them for three months.

Thanks for posting your video.and your experience. I have bilateral hearing loss. About 30% loss in both ears. I've dealt with it since I was an infant. Several ear surgeries and hearing aids later, I now have 2 cochlear implants. Osia 2. I was self-conscious of them at first but then decided to just own it. I shaved my head to make them more visible and normalize it. I also did some amateur stand-up comedy discussing the humorous issues I dealt with when I first got them.

I felt almost the same. When I was first diagnosed with hearing loss, I thought „no way, I don’t need hearing aids. I can hear the birds sing.“ But I didn‘t know how many birds there were singing… 🤷‍♂️ Now (2 years later) I am happy about my hearing aids and I don‘t like taking them out at all. Even with swimming I feel the same. Not in the ocean (that is ok), but in the pool. I just miss sounds there…..

I experiens no problems with wearing them. However i have difficulties with the sound level. It will take time to get use to it. You mentioned that the brain has to get used again to the sounds that i did not here anymore before. U are ar right. On the next checkup the volume will be increast to the next level. It will be done step by step until we have reached the soundlevel we need to be. Thank you for your video

A lot of good observations here. Thanks. I've been wearing my new Resound Omnia aids for a little over two weeks. It's quite a change in my life. Not as bad an experience as I thought it would be and not as good an experience as I thought it would be. But a necessary experience. One thing I envy you for. You put those two aids in your ears in about 10 seconds. Takes me about 2 or 3 minutes of fiddling around. I'm wearing small domes but they're still tricky to insert. Hopefully I'll get better at it. Maybe my ear canals are really tiny. By the way, I'm 79 years old.
We have an inground swimming pool and next summer nothing is going to keep me from swimming. I'm sure if you loved swimming before you're be back in the water real soon. Good luck...just subscribed.

And then came job and family. Luckily hearing aids have gotten smaller, better quality, better reliability. I wear Costco Kirkland Signature. I've been wearing my hearing aids for around 5 years now. As you say, they do not make your hearing "normal" again, but they are a great help (aid....). I prefer to leave my hearing aids out when I am at home (much to my wife's dislike) because I just like the peace and quiet. Yes, there are many things I don't hear without them, most noticably the birds (obviously I've lost a lot of high pitch sound). Bluetooth is very useful for the phone, but I prefer headphones when listening to TV, computer, tablet etc. I still do a lot of lip-reading even with my aids in. Just my experience. Thanks for your video, it's always good to share experiences like these.

My hearing loss is principally high frequency (from too many explosions, gun firings, artillery, etc. during training at the time of the Viet Nam war....I never went to Viet Nam). I got to the place in recent years where I could hear that someone was speaking but could not articulate what they were saying...even over a PA system. So I got them principally to overcome that problem and it did take care of that. My two big adjustments were hearing myself talking or breathing or chewing....which was never normal. The second problem was that I'm a classical music guy and music (from natural instruments) just never sounds right and my stereo still sounds better without them. I did get a 2nd setting from my audiologist (that he called the Hi Fi setting) which helped balance things a little but it is still very unnatural and more so in the car with my B&O car stereo. So I still pretty much use them for occasions when live people are speaking and also in my home theater so that dialogue doesn't get lost in other soundtrack sounds. As you say, it's not a cure. Mine were about $1,700 so they aren't of the cheap variety (though there are a lot much more expensive). Finally, keeping wax out of the tubes is a real challenge. I attempt to clean my ears (and soak up the water) after every shower....but about once per month the hearing aids get plugged. But I'm not sure what more I can do about that.

I'm right with you re the military training - that was the beginning of my hearing loss as well. The only way I've found to ease hearing myself breathing etc was to take out one hearing aid - it seemed to stop the 'head in a bucket' feeling. Hang in there, cheers,

I am still trying to get used to singing with them,… ive had soo many other hearing aids and I am still trying to work with the ones I have to work, but getting there,.. I have an issue with domes and molds and trying to figure that out.. although I love how natural quality the phonak is, but my audiologist must fix the fact that I feel a bit occluded with my new molds that I just got and need them to sound a bit less occluded/congested with my voice because I’m a singer and need that addressed a bit (not sure if it’s just my allergies a bit but it’s probably also my new molds,.. but other than that the quality is amazing and sound so natural otherwise.. i think my vent size is fine, my audiologist has done REM’s on them with my other molds, but then I had to switch back to domes while I waited for my other molds to come in. The domes felt a little more open but I know I need the molds for the best fit and quality..

I've always had my hearing loss since birth and I am now 44 years old. I never really thought about things I don't enjoy due to not being able to hear without my hearing aids. I don't go swimming, I take quick showers, I don't exert myself much due to sweat has been an issue in the past, and windy areas I don't care for due to the noise against my mic. My current set of hearing aids reduce noise automatically quite well so windy situations are far less. Though I'm excited to upgrade with the new water proofing. I may not be so concerned about exercise causing sweat anymore. Thank you for sharing!

My hearing loss is sensorineural, not conductive. My right side slopes from normal to severe and I use a hearing aid on that side and I am deaf in my left ear and have CI on that side.

It's kinda funny... I HATED my HAs growing up, and would never really wear them. My loss very slowly progressed, and when I was in my early 30's, it started really going down. I had gotten so used to, and comfy, being deaf, that it's the opposite for me... my HAs are a shock for a little bit, when I put them in. Because my loss is basically profound, the difference in sound is jarring, especially turning them on and taking them out! I've been trying to wear them more consistently lately, so I can actually hear shit. 😆😅 The other day, I actually heard birds in a tree, and in the relative quietude of my kitchen, I heard my cat, Stimpy, lapping up his water from his bowl! Brushing your teeth?? Weird!! And, our cockatoo, Peaches, sounds like Marge Simpson yelling, when she screams. 😂🦻🤯🦻

I do not know what HA you use, assuming one of this 5-6 brands of hearing aids, where you could even remotely adjust, fit for your needs by audiologist, and improve the performance. Because of what you described and shared with us shows you can use a better fitting for your needs.

Im in the UK & currently have NHS Bluetooth hearing aids with batteries. The domes really hurt my ears, so I was given smaller ones, which fell out. I have since purchased closed domes which has helped, but trying to get my aids adjusted is like trying to talk to the Pope in person.
I am so frustrated at the moment. I can't hear without them, I can't hear with them. If I put them in my ears too far, they hurt like hell but everything sounds amazing. Loosen them a little and it's just like somebody's put their fingers in my ears. I truly wish I could afford private hearing aids, but at an average of £2500 - £3500 per pair it's simply not viable at this moment in time. I am hoping eventually to get back to the original audiologist I saw, who seemed to understand my problems. The male audiologist who fitted them for me was clock watching & couldn't get me out of the room fast enough. He said it was my fault the domes were hurting and he could see no reason why they should. When he inserted them, it was so painful I could seriously have cried on the spot. I feel so frustrated, but am determined to persevere. Sadly the NHS isn't the wonderful institute it once was, having said that I'm grateful to have any hearing aids at all.

Hi Toni, I am sorry this has been your experience so far with the nhs as I have just had hearing aids fitted myself and I have the same problems. I described it as having small pieces of gravel inserted into my ears. The person who fitted them for me just rushed it, but I went back two weeks later and got a brilliant audiologist who listened to what I said and fixed every problem almost instantly she just had every answer to every question I had. Maybe try your Gp and see if you can be referred to a different audiology department at another hospital. I am currently trialing two different domes one is small and sits inside the ear canal and one is larger and sits right on the edge of the ear canal. I prefer the small one with a closed dome as I have low frequency loss on that ear. Don’t accept the poor audiologist try and get someone else you don’t need to be in pain to hear.

I have just come across your you tube channel! I am from the UK,I have worn hearing aids for over 30 yrs! Until 8 wks ago I had a severe to profound loss, but now its slipped in to the profoundly deaf section of a hearing chart! I have a 110db loss! So now I only hear a few muffled sounds & a few words!
Do you suffer from hearing fatigue? I do so more now! Here in the UK we get free hearing aids & batteries! I am on the waiting list for more powerful hearing aids! But they can only amplify what hearing is left! But a cochlear implant might be needed next!
I find people treat you differently! As you can see from my profile picture I decided to get blue earmoulds to show off my hearing aids! At least you can cover yours with your hair! Please forgive me for asking if you have shown your hearing aids in other video's but what do they look like?
Do your family find it hard to communicate with you? And how severe is your loss please? Sorry if I am being nosey but you make some interesting points! I can't hear your voice so I use closed captions! I hope you & your family had a great Thanksgiving Day! It's even harder if you have lots of people talking at once! Do you think you may have to have a cochlear implant further down the line? I will have a look at any other of your video's over the weekend! 🧡

Thank you so much for commenting!
I 100% suffer from hearing fatigue and brain fog. I have to remind myself to take hearing breaks often. Here in Canada, we don't get free hearing aids but we do get a small subsidy - it is not much but helps a little.
I have not shown my hearing aids off too much on CZcams yet but I do show them off on my Instagram @hardtohearit. I don't qualify for a cochlear implant yet but that may change eventually.
I have only had my hearing loss for the past 5 years so everyone is still adjusting. My hearing loss is moderate to severe depending on the decimal. I have my next hearing test next week so we shall see how much it has changed since the last one.

Do you find that you get your information in different ways ? If like me you avoid having unnecesssary conversations and all the stress that goes with communicating . You may notice that you are far more observant than most people . There are many ways we learn things , such as seeing body language . Take note of how observant you really are .Lipreading is a good example . Like a blind person sees through their fingertips . Well deaf people are very observant . Hope this helps a bit .

my hearing has deteriorated over the last few years so I'm considering hearing aids. Yet, I've talked with friends who have bought hearing aids, including the $6000 version, only to complain about the loss of music quality, the problems of hearing conversations with background noise or other conversations.
I've watch videos of the audiologists who give you an idea of what the sound is like for different brands. Some are so sharp sounding and others are better. Then I read reviews of the tuning by audiologists who are less than competent and adjust the spectrum to sub-optimal performance.
As an electronic engineer, I've worked with DSP chips for various applications but not for hearing. But I know how crappy this chips can be 'tuned' without a solid understanding of the principles involved. As my hearing gets worse, I don't know if I can trust a brand or a person to improve the quality.
