In today's video, I look at the fifth generation Maserati Quattroporte. Commonly regarded as one of the greatest Maseratis of all time, the QP V has a Ferrari V8 engine, drop dead gorgeous looks and real practicality. But - will is bankrupt you?

I have absolutely no affiliations to that company, but to support the channel I want to give my user recommendation of Dodo Juice products. I've used them since at least '13 and love their products. I'm not a professional detailer or anything, just an amateur, and I don't have experience with many competitors, mostly just Autoglym's stuff, but for sure the results have been excellent. Their waxes, sealants, clay bar stuff, all of the stuff I've bought from them has been top notch including their 'quick detailer'.
My favourite wax of theirs is Hard Candy: so easy to use, and hard wearing for drivers that drive in all conditions.
I know that in the car enthusiast circles I've been in they have a great reputation, even a professional detailer recommended them to a friend of mine.

I tried to give my recommendation but I guess because CZcams is run by absolutely incompetent people who are so profit-hungry and negligent they refuse to staff properly and instead just use failures of bots to do a horrible job instead of actual people, so my comment got removed. I put it up again but it'll probably be taken down again.

May I ask where you got the aftermarket nav unit? I have owned my 2012 Sport GTS since 2014, have not had much problems, aside from the window regulators breaking one by one lol, and then of course there's the sticky interior.

The looks, the sound, the steering, the handling...way closer to the 458 than it should be. Thanks Jay for another great vid.

My late stepfather had a wickedly beautiful 2008 quattroporte gts with the improved gear box. It was sublime to drive and, to this day, the most beautiful sedan I’ve ever laid eyes on. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for its Chrysler derived successor. In due time, this generation of the quattroporte, which benefited from Ferrari’s influence, will go down as one of the best.

I agree the 2008 Quattroporte GTS was an amazing machine! I personally however think the next (6th) generation that started in 2013 (still in production) looks even better, and most importantly, it’s much more reliable. Admittedly the 5th generation sounds better though.

I love the haphazard Italian interior of buttons scattered around, but most of all I love thats it's not quite as pretty as it should be, almost slightly dopey, like a puppy you feel a bit sorry for. You’ve totally nailed it in this video. Had ours for almost 4 years… ruinously expensive, but it really is the first and last word in V8 super saloons without forced induction. Only thing I’d add is that the seats are deceptively unsupportive, and in auto the ZF loves to change up to 5th which helps expose the torque deficiency… solution is to drive in manual and rev the engine of course :)

Exhaust valves… old ones cut out and new ones welded in (instead of buying a whole new backbox!). Bose amp died, fairly inexpensive to refurb. I treated myself to 2007 M139 at the end of last year. Thought it was a mad idea, being 21 at the time I was shocked I could even afford to insure it. I was looking at S classes and 7 series, but once I realised I could have an exotic, the petrol head in me really took over.
It's not cost me much, YET and that's a big yet. I have a feeling that over the next couple of months, it's going to raid my bank account if the £500 fuel bill a month wasn't already.

Tom from the US...I own this exact car...MY 2012. I bought it pre-loved almost 5 years ago with 46k miles. Now, almost 73k miles. Other than normally scheduled maintenance and a brake job, the only "failure" repair I've had is an O2 sensor that went bad. Daily driver in Chicago area with snows. I love the car; it drives much smaller than it is. Yes, I have a case of the stickies (not real bad but clearly noticeable). I'm an OCD car guy, but for some reason, the stickies just don't raise my blood pressure. These cars do better when driven routinely. Dealer wanted to buy the car when I had the O2 sensor repaired and offered me $18 USD. NFW. I'll take my chances with repairs. Good job, Jay; You are top-notch IMO.

Another common issue you didn't mention was worn engine mountings. I bought my 2009 facelift QPV early last year, and to my mind the 'standard' model represented the best value. For around half the price of a Sport GTS you get 90% of the performance, and with the optional handling pack that mine has, most of the driving fun as well. Even without a valved exhaust, the bog standard system still makes a wonderful noise. Also, it is possible to fix some problems quite easily and very cheaply, such as window regulator repair kits (about £35) and the boot release microswitch (under a tenner) if you're handy with the spanners.

On this one occasion, climbing my favorite mountain pass, I forgot to push the sport button and was quite happy forgetting the added exhaust note...The worst experience I had was the fuel spilling out of the tank on tight righthand bends. The timing of this video is insane. Today I just put a deposit down on a 09 Quattroporte S with the 4.7L engine. It has an unbelievable 5000 miles for $32k. That is insane a Ferrari powered sedan with an original sticker of 150k for that price. Hell a base Camry starts at $26k.
I have been researching these cars for the last few months and your video is spot on with the common maintenance issues and quirks. I have been checking on owner reviews and the overwhelming majority say they have been reliable and have enjoyed their experience. I also own an e39 M5 and I have put a lot of money into it since I originally purchased it in 2013. So I do know about rod bearings, timing chain guides and valve cover gaskets. You just don’t hear about major issues with the QP power plant. Yes you should be able to do your own oil changes and wrenching from time to time. They will all cost money to run. As they say you have three choices to pick from fast, cheap, or reliable and you can only have two.
I much prefer the QP exhaust to my m5 with a muffler delete this engine sounds like nothing else and the video doesn’t do it justice. In person it’s stupendous. I think this is one of the most under appreciated cars out there. If they just put a prancing horse on it they would be 80k all day. Yes the duo select car is crap and should be avoided at all cost but the updated car with the zf is generally reliable. I think because it’s not a manual gearbox car it gets overlooked right now but when enthusiasts start to mis the roar of an Italian V8 they will give this another look. I absolutely love this series of videos your doing. I know it’s a lot of work to do the in-depth research on each car. Your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.

A base Camry won't multiply it's price in running and repair costs in one or two years 😂 So funny how people are still that dumb to look at the sale price not thinking about WHY the sellers are so desperate to sell the car for that price. With 5000 miles the car most certainly never ran properly.

    • @ryanrobinson2401
      @ryanrobinson2401 Před rokem +1

Having ran two of them, the first one was a money pit that had all the known weakspots
to put right, my second one was one of the last made, but i still had an expert fully inspect it.
Avoid the early ones like the plague, they will cost far more to repair than they are worth.
If you asked me to recommemd one, it would be with great caution, they are a great long range
cruiser, but that nagging doubt over reliablity is always there.
If you want reliability, these are a big gamble, you need to live within a sensible distance
of one of the few good experts that know these cars backwards, if the service light is not
reset correctly, you can brick the instument pack.
Like most italian cars, when they are running right, they give you a level of satisfaction that few
others can, but when not if they go wrong but when, your wallet will cry.

Big smile on my face watching this and knowing how much love you have for them has rekindled my love for mine. I have had a 2007 Sport GT
Automatica for 1.5 years and apart from a cardan shaft bearing rebuild by a specialist (which the selling dealer covered under warranty) I have only had to replace a couple of lower suspension bushes and the anti roll bar rubbers to cure a rattle over bumps. Maybe I'm lucky but I have spent more money fixing problems on newer everyday cars with similar distances driven. I agree an inspection is a must so you know what's wrong and what needs replacing soon so you can budget for it. Also a full service history preferably with receipts so you can see any bigger jobs that may have been carried out already. I treat my Maserati as my pride and joy and like to spend a bit of money on it to fix the slight imperfections. There may be hidden problems that rear there ugly head on things that appear ok until you open them up but that's the same for all cars and as the man himself said can cost an arm and a leg to replace on a Maserati. You don't need to be rich to buy and run one you just need the right mindset that you don't mind or even enjoy spending money on it to make the best value Italian GT car that little bit better.

I have one, a 4.7 GTS like this one. Just allow 2-300/month for running it, no depreciation to speak of and you’re good. 99% of population are scared of running one so spend 400/month on a new bore box instead!
Why do that when you could have the best looking, best sounding exotic saloon of all time!

I have a 2007 Sport GT with the ZF Automatica gearbox...and yes I've replaced engine mounts, front suspension bushings, A/C compressor., cam cover gaskets, knock sensors..had issues with the front struts, suspension sensors, rear door locks....even rats eating the wiring! I fixed most of the issues myself.....BUT what a gorgeous car, and as he says, the grin is there everytime I start it up. One thing he didn't mention is the handling, with that great weight distribution, the QP actually handles better than the GT...put it in Sport mode and DRIVE it...fantastic...and the looks and comments from the public...they wonder what it is...and when they see the badge on the boot ....says it all. I love it!

Jay Emm did a fairly good summary. I did a pre-purchase inspection to start with, after this time the rusting thing still plagues the car. It’s heavy so definitely check the suspension for wear after this many years mine is starting to creek a bit. For the longest while I had electrical issues that came down to a bad fan relay, that fixed a bunch of stuff. I’m just now starting to get the cold start rattle it’s for maybe 2-3 seconds then the car runs fine. All in all I was told the car would kill my bank but I have a good independent shop that hasn’t ran into anything that was too horrible yet just a bunch of little annoyances

I have a QP GTS closing in on 60k miles. It's never been and won't be a daily driver and one would be foolish to call it reliable - it's not.
That said, it has never left me stranded or stuck me with an insane repair bill (I do the basic fluids, plugs, etc myself). Post 2010 models fixed the cam variator, which leaves the motor quite solid. It devours tires and control arms and has quite a bit of parasitic battery drain.
In terms of utility it's pointless. In terms of beauty and intangible "passion", it is a masterpiece. I adore it.

I've got one 4.2 Sport GT. (Color Bordeaux). It's a very pleasant and confortable car. People are usually interested and respect it, pleased to see the motor, hear the exhaust sound, etc. It doesn't have much Kilometrage (83000) and i have no problems with it except park sensor random fail. It is confortable, silent inside, exotic and beautiful. Driving it in a cool way will not burn too much gazoline (10,5l/10 on motorway). But my other Sedan, car, an Jag X308 Daimler V8, has a better charism, people are always smiling and often thumbs up, it is also more confortable and enjoying inside, but may encounter several issues with ball joints, rubber, bearings, tires and many things due to its weight. Both are two major pieces of car historical patrimonio, and that's why i can not imagine to get rid of them.

I have a Sport GTS in Black over Cuoio leather with Piano Black paneling and titanium multitrident wheels; it is beautiful, understated, and quite a rare spec. I think the carbon interior only works if you have the black/alcantara interior spec'd (otherwise it is too busy to my eyes). The cuoio leather really adds to the presence and "specialness" of the car every time you get into it. And the multi-trident wheels (as you have) are perfect for this car.
