  • How the GL RTW bags hold up is the question addressed. Build with light weight and a minimalist approach the RTW's were tested while traveling through South Africa.

    Good overview! For long-term performance, look up Paolo Cattaneo - he’s ridden for multiple years across multiple continents with Round The World Panniers. A search here on CZcams will also dig up several other long-term reviews.

    I was all over the place with considering size and weight and also have some mosko stuff which is great. However when I was looking for pannier bags I found a good compromise with Kriega. So far they have been good for my needs. The next time you have an option it would be interesting to see how they compare to the variety of bags you have used.

    Only thing I would mention is I would try to fit a heat shield for the exhaust side. Here in Cape Town there was a case of a soft pannier on a Africa Twin eventually ending up in flames from exhaust heat

    35L + 5L x2 front and back. $700 plus $200 for the mounting plates. 14.8 lbs with mounts.
    Mosko - 30L + 5L (and optional 5L more, if you need/want it). $870. 20 lbs for a pair.
    Small panniers, small bike plus ultralight gear = happiness.

      It's a pitty that if you want them to ship it to Europe it cost another 900$ with Fedex (shipping cost from GL website to Poland). Total price become creazy and not acceptable. What I really like is mounting system, big adventage if you want to quickly swap with hard cases...

  • @toddthepanamericanbrooks888

    At 2:19 you say that they are half the weight of your Giant Loop Panniers, I think you meant Mosko or Lone Rider? Anyway the review is excellent and I like that you point
    out they are great for light weight minimalists and that they still hold up well. Hope you liked Africa, I hope to get there some day! See you in Maryland in September!

    Bret, on your previous video about packing your panniers for your So Africa trip, you noted using some organizing pouches. What brand did you use? I’ve been trying to find better pouches for my travels and haven’t found anything really useful yet. I’m looking for smaller bags to better organize groups of small, similar type, items.

  • @jayalicekurtmaya

    Thanks for the review Brett. One thing you didn't really address is if, now that you've traveled with them, of you think the weight savings around up being worth the trade offs in features / price / durability to the Mosko's / Lonerider's - great review otherwise, come visit us in Kenya next time...

  • @ronanrogers4127
    @ronanrogers4127 Před 3 lety +1

    I’ve not seen them in person, but the material does look a little lightweight for longer adventure trips. All these things, like tires as well, are compromises, but while Mosko are heavier, I suspect (as someone who owned the backcountry 40l duffel) Mosko are also more durable. These GL aren’t exactly on the cheap end of the scale.

    I ran the giant loop on my ktm 990 a few years ago and they water logged all my gear even with the inside dry bags. After that they were never used again.
    Moved to Mosko and never looked back.
    I’m sure the new stuff is way better . I really like many of the new companies using a quick connect plate with the soft luggage.

    Commuting, it would drive me insane to the point of having to move to Cali or emigrating.

    The m/c would lose all its advantages in heavy traffic.

    I'm still not sure how we end up with $800 for a couple of bags. I know they are cool and it's certainly not only GL (they're all at it) - but you have to admit, it's kinda nuts. For this money, they should come with an armed guard - to protect the bags, not the contents!

    • @AndrewBoundy
      @AndrewBoundy Před 3 lety +5

      @@HJZ75driver ballistic nylon (1680 cordura) is $16 a yard on ebay. Mounting hardware is pretty common alloy or steel. There's some (fairly basic) R&D, sure - but it's a bag. The reason this happens is because we are nuts enough to pay it. Same for boating, airplanes etc. It's priced for the market, not the value. That's my 2cents anyway - I'm guilty too - I buy $100 plastic 2L bags that are made for $10.
