Acknowledging that N. Korea is in the league of nuclear nations is sobering enough. That they now have the clout to negotiate is paramount to survival. That they expect concessions, to achieve their goals is part of the dealings. The variables are huge. Trump thinks diplomacy is a four letter word, in his choice of Department of State to granting money for diplomatic purposes. This might be the right time to act, but not with how Trump deals.
Stevie- C - that is exactly the point. Russia and the US have not only lost whatever momentum they once had in pursuing true nuclear disarmament, the Trumpster wants more nukes. It has never been safe or appropriate to give the POTUS such absolute authority to launch missiles that will cause irrevocable damage to all of us, including the country stupid enough to launch them. Nuclear weapons backfire on the user. Trump’s ignorance and vindictiveness and impulsiveness has just made it finally clear to everybody how stupid it is to give the President such power. He does not have to consult with anybody. He does not have to get approval of Congress, not even from a representative committee. People who think the military won’t follow orders are grabbing at straws.
Nuclear weapons are not like snowballs. We do not become safer by stockpiling them. They are dangerous during manufacture, storage, testing, use, and disassembly. People have died as a result simply due to extra cancers.
Even our conventional WMDs today are so powerful that there would have been nothing left of Europe to rebuild if they were available in WWII.
