    Just removed VRO from my Johnson 115 last season. Only way to go. Much less smoke, runs smoother and I no longer have to worry about the VRO failing and killing my engine.

      @smokenon5021 There is something else going on. I run with the original fuel pump and get almost 6000 rpm and close to 48 mph on flat water. My motor is newer but that's not the reason.

      @smokenon5021 Hey smoke, I thought about your problem with your motor and it could be a vacuum leak in the fuel line. Check all the lines closely for hairline cracks or loose connections. Good luck

    its always best to get rid of the engine killing VRO.
    it was only put on these engines to help omc pass emissions regs that came in.
    VRO is a great idea, but it was a big failure due to its complexity and cheaply made parts.
    safest way is to get rid of the big fuel pump and go back to the tried and tried old style pump, they never give problems like these new idea crap things, and cost a lot less to service when they need a rebuild.
    OMC new the vro was crap and that's why all the engines came with the yellow plugs to help you revert back to old style premix.
    Strange how the best selling most reliable engine on the market became so unreliable when fitted with vro ?
    the idea is good to a point, but these engines were never designed to be run at 100 to 1 and even less at real low rpm.
    this style is best running at 50 to 1 on average marine work and 40 to 1 racing.

    Would this procedure work equally well on a 1986 Johnson 90 hp motor?

  • @alexyoung2813

    I agree mines an 1986 vro its the best runs clean and 40 mph 18/6 sylvan deal hull.

    Did this create less smoking while running???

    Didn't just disconnect you fuel pump?

    Do you know if it would be the same way on a 1988 mercury 70hp. Thanks

      @01kporter Před 10 lety

      Yeah It should be similar. As long as the fuel its getting is mixed then should be fine.

    What fuel ratio would you run for a 1985 60hp Evinrude and what kind of oil

    • @danielfetchak1865
      @danielfetchak1865 Před 2 lety

      50-1 and a good quality 2 cycle oil. Evinrude or Johnson 2 cycle oil will work.

    I say the VRO outboards from evinrudes are good when well serviced I was an outboard mechanic some 18yrs ago and I had the job of checking these motors at an outboard wreckers and I knew what other people says bout the VROs I knew with my 1st V6 evinrude I'll disconnect the VRO due to my experience with premix outboards I simply run my motors on 50;1 and I knew there is oil in the fuel all the time and that's easier that way even for us old salts we tend to own premix V6 outboards that's the evinrudes 150hp to 175hp too these are the older engines I will run I will prefer to run these outboards on good old 50;1 the oil injection can be a source of trouble on the evinrudes and that's why I prefer the premix this was the right thing to do is disconnect the VRO and simply run these outboards that's the evinrudes and the Johnsons too that's the 150hp to 175hp that's the older ones like the 90deg; models 1986 onwards these are the ones that you disconnect the VRO these motor have a lot of trouble with the VROs that's what I learnt in the trade as a young marine mechanic and I knew these motor well from the time with outboard wrecking shops and I knew what the boat shops says to me bout these motors even the 35hp 3cyl models had that same issues to that's what I learnt as well that's what I knew in the trade and reading magazines on boat motors too and im smart on the evinrudes and Johnsons too that's my view in the VROs I base that view from my time in the trace and knowing what the other says too

      I just got a boat with a 1990 200 xp, when I bypass the vro do I need to by a kit I've seen online?

    • @michaelwalkermw83
      @michaelwalkermw83 Před 7 lety +1

      you can but I prefer the dealers if they have one in stock and If neededyou can get it for that model outboard these motors are high performance outboards my idea is to see how it runs say on 50;1 and go from there and see the kit you are getting contains all the parts needed for the job and I really think the VRO is nothing but trouble that's why OMC had so much trouble with it hope this helps

      +michael walker the previous owner has took the oil tank out. so I'm not sure if they did it the right way. I was told to mix it myself. the motor seems to run ok.other than not being very fast.it's set for a couple years so I might have other minor problems..what should I look for to see if it was done right?

    • @michaelwalkermw83
      @michaelwalkermw83 Před 7 lety

      if needed to check the all the VRO Parts can be removed and also check the ignition if the case I will get the motor checked by someone who knew about these outboards I think the people who did take the oil tank out of the boat did not disconnect the VRO at the motor that's the fuel pump and the wiring that's related to the VRO as well I knew this will need to be checked that's what I learnt in my time in the trade as an outboard mechanic as far I knew that's the logical thing to do is to make sure all the parts are easy to get to on these outboards that's is the Johnson and evinrudes that's my thinking with these motors all I say take your time to know these motors thanks

    • @michaelwalkermw83
      @michaelwalkermw83 Před 7 lety +1

      check the inlet where the oil goes into as well I knew the inlet is on the left of the outboard where the fuel goes too and make sure the oil lines are taken off as well just make sure you check the inlet I have an evinrude manual if you need to know I'll check the manual for you my manual is a Clymer shop manual I will check it out for you via the manual to see the procedures are for the evinrudes its the same with the Johnsons Too as far I knew from my time in the trade and knowing the outboards that's what I knew that is check the left side of the outboard and not where the oil goes into the outboard I'll check that for sure in my Clymer shop manual I will see the article on VRO and related parts hope this helps thanks!! from mick

    So how was VRO an engine killer. How was it complex it is an air motor 100 year old technology and no lift pump from the tank Also if we do the math the video was put up in 2013 the motor is an 1989. By my reckoning 22 years and it is still working. Get off the internet people vro is not the evil entity people think it is. Also don't respond back with my sisters fathers son had problems with his. It is also the only injection system that tells you if the pump is not working.

      putsstuff. can the vro wires being corroded send the engine to slow mode?

    • @mikefuller4539
      @mikefuller4539 Před 5 lety +1

      we had it fail without warning and seize the motor. It started again and siezed and started again and we ran premix.. We only used it for ski-ing and it has been fine the 4-5 years since before finally dying this past fall.. Now on the replacement 60 Johnson, it will disabled before it touches the boat. Pre-mix is easier since all our other motors run pre-mix and its never a worry.
