- A playthrough of Namco's 1992 horror-themed platformer for the Sega Genesis, Splatterhouse 2.
Splatterhouse 2 takes place a few months after the epic conclusion of the original Splatterhouse - Rick finds out that Jennifer is actually still alive, and that he needs to head to the hidden mansion behind the burnt down ruins of the first one, put on the mask, and destroy everything in the way.
The gameplay is nigh identical to the first game - you punch and kick a wide assortment of squirmy, oozy gross things that explode in red plumes when they go down. It's also just as brutally difficult as the original, so if you really enjoy the demands of old-school arcade action, this one provides a pretty satisfying second dose.
It looks and sounds pretty good too - I don't think that the presentation is quite as good as the TurboGrafx-16 version (the whole game seems much darker and muddier with less color, the samples have some pretty nasty distortion, and the music isn't quite as memorable or generally pleasing as that that played from the Turbo's PSG). Still, those things don't really hurt the game much.
The game plays like it just strutted off out of the arcade and into your Genesis, and that's awesome. And with it being October and all, what better time is there to play games where you kick undead fetuses and punch demon eyeballs until they explode? The bosses in this rock pretty hard.
It was much later included as an unlockable bonus in the Splatterhouse reboot for PS3/Xbox 360, as well as apparently being the only M rated game on the Wii Virtual Console.

I really like the fact that there's a strong emphasis on using just your bare hands for a big part of the game, Rick's not put off by all these gross and disgusting horrors, he's not afraid of touching them with his bare hands, punching them so hard their heads explode and their bodies break in two.
Its prob a better game than the Turbografx original def. better quality. The Turbo game is a little more pure Horror themed
@@worsethanhitlerpt.2539 I think the difficulty is a big thing that held back this game compared to the TurboGrafx 16 original. That version was just challenging enough to be tough but fun. This game only gives 4 hearts and the bosses are insanely hard, with much harder to identify patterns. Rick also seems slightly less response than before.

I was noticing that last night watching the first splatterhouse play through, when he’s in the damn sewer, up to his waist in filthy water with shit swimming by him and those huge fuckers that come out of the water you have to use a 2x4 to splatter against the back wall. The whole time I’m thinking “okay look, even if I was rescuing my wife and or kid, I’d be scared pretty shitless in that damn sewer”.
@@bubbythebear6891 It's really not that hard; I got to the 7th level on my first try before calling it quits. I'll come back and use the password later to beat it maybe.
The bosses so far have been pretty easy. The hanging fetus were a little difficult, but I caught on on what the game wanted me to do pretty easily. Unless the last few levels are just insanely hard; this game is pretty simple for a game from that era.
This game blew my mind when I first saw it at the age of 7. Not only did I think the graphics were amazing, but the music, art direction and gore was everything I wanted in a game. Even though the game scared me, a little, it was all I could think about. I begged my mom for a Genesis and a copy of this game for Christmas and, boy, was it a memorable holiday.

I remember the first time I played this as a kid. My first thought with the first enemy was “sheesh, that’s some ugly monsters I have to beat”. It was scary. But then Rick tears him apart with a punch. “Oh ok, they’re ugly but they’re made of jelly, its alright”.

See I didnt know this game existed when I was a kid cause I grew up in the early 2000's but when i saw it as an adult I was like HOLY FUCK THIS LOOKS AWESOME!! I immediatley needed to get a copy. I was just so enthrawled by it
I remembered that I saw my brother and his friends play this game when I was little. The first stage boss (the bloated thing) scared me the most and that is when my brother told me to go to my room because it's scary, and then I ran into my room and hid underneath the blanket.

I remember years ago when I lived with my grandparents, I plugged my old Sega Genesis into the big screen tv in the living room and popped this game in. The look of horror on my grandmas face was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen. She made me turn it off and put another game in.

This game was perfect. Awesome graphics, music, characters, sound effects, and simple & responsive controls. Absolutely excellent horror atmosphere.
One nice touch in the first stage: The Deadmen quickly realize that Rick is a threat they can't beat and run, even though they wind up running directly into (and get eaten by) the first boss. They're more afraid of Rick than they are getting eaten!
What a time to be a kid born in the 80s and growing up in the 90s all the cool ways to see games level up and all of systems and arcades to play with. Even though I only beat the first one and the newest one I still liked this series for the plot and music. Wonder if there will ever be another era like this in the future.

Because that scientist is none other than Dr. Henry West. The sole reason of West Mansion's existence and the core villain of Splatterhouse.
@@Bigguy2345 Tbh All things considered the Terror Mask is the true villain of the entire story, all its powers were used to bring the monsters into the real world, it also betrays rick at the end of splatterhouse 3.
One of the best games i played on Sega probably the best.

How our grandparents got to school
The reason I love this series is because the main character doesn't run away from all these terrors like most horror games. He f***g smashes their faces with his bare hands. " You think you're scary ? Maybe you'll realize how scary I am after we're done". If anyone knows any similar kind of game where you are a one man army do tell me please.

Oh yeah this game is really traumatizing back in the day. I just now started playing it again on this multiple games in one cartridge and it still kind of gives me the creeps.
Out of all of them, Splatterhouse 3 has to be the most unsettling in my opinion. Fun times!

That one heart final boss battle had me on the edge of my seat.

The Jolly DJ splatteehouse is really awesome, the only bad thing about splatterhouse 3 is that you get a timer and one of ricks family members can be killed.

@@systemshocker2875 Japanese version has limited continues and no passwords. Normal mode gives you 5 hearts instead of 4 and Very Difficult mode gives you one heart instead of Game Master's 2 hearts.
The story is different too, and much more coherent with the first game's story since Jennifer did die. So it makes more sense that Rick tries to bring her back to life.

Splatterhouse 2 is an excellent follow-up to the original game on the TG16. It may not look as good, but it plays just as well and is far, far grosser!

Not sure if we talk about the same games here cuz Splatterhouse 2 looks much better than Splatterhouse on TurboGrafx-16!
Splatterhouse 2 runs in higher resolution, has all kinds of parallax scrollings and nicer graphics overall.
Splatterhouse on TurboGrafx-16 is not bad but it's technically worse due to TurboGrafx-16's limited GPU and weaker sound chip. Some sections look downright NES level such as the intro or 2nd boss fight. Also while it doesn't lack parallax scrollings in the sense that the arcade original game didn't have such effects to begin with, on the other hand the TurboGrafx port lacks all the foreground assets which can be seen here and there making the game even flatter than the arcade.
btw did you play the arcade version? If not, you should! The sound in particular is on a whole other level and vastly enhances the experience. Also the graphics are much more detailed and all. The TurboGrafx-16 port is a valiant effort but the arcade version is just something else.

The Splatterhouse series was the last legit set of scary video games. All new "horror" games are just jump scares....
Technically this is better than Splatterhouse on TurboGrafx-16. Splatterhouse 2 on Genesis runs in higher resolution, has nicer graphics, all kinds of parallax scrollings and meatier audio. It's a pretty good side scrolling beat 'em up that I only wish it had better sound FX when hitting stuff or using the chainsaw. Splatterhouse 3 made some improvements in the sound departement but also plays differently with 4-directional movements and is probably my favorite in the serie.
None of those things make a game better. The only thing that matters is the gameplay.

This one was always my favorite, sure the first one was scarier and still amazing but this one expands on the story and has a cooler ending. I also love the 80s-90s evil dead horror style of the first 3 games.

- Scarlet Johansson is adorable to be Jennifer Willis!

Splatterhouse are a pretty cool horror based game series. I don't remember ever seeing these games back in the day. Maybe they weren't distributed to Australia. Someone else might know and is welcome to correct me.
I wouldn't be surprised. The arcade version of the first game was toned WAY down for home distribution in the US, and even then I believe it was banned from Australia and most of Europe.

Great game. Spent many quarters on the first Splatterhouse in the arcade. 2:46 - 3:41 miss the "thunk! thunk!" sound effect of the original for this section. Other than that artwork and sound effects are great. Would LOVE to play Splatterhouse 1,2&3 on the PC
