Hi Ben and Jack, thank you so much for the video. I’m a 40 year old musician who’s been dealing with this for about 6 months. It is constant on one side, the volume changes, and sometimes the sound. It’s been the toughest thing I’ve ever had to deal with in my life. About 4 months ago I was at my lowest, videos like this have lifted me up and brought me back to some normalcy. Thanks again-Jay

I supplement this thesis with this ... that when someone is under great stress..there are strong vibrations inside the cochlea and sensory hairs collide with each other..and so they send more different sounds at the height of the brain ... now the question remains how to lift those folded hairs or destroy without damaging those that are not folded .... I'm sure I'm right ..

As a DJ with tinnitus following a set that was just too loud, my audiogram is normal but when I test higher frequencies (12khz) with my own studio tools, I have around 20db loss at those frequencies in the affected hear. Audiograms are not precise enough for a lot of noise-induced hearing loss that can be specific to a few frequencies (they stop at 8Khz).

I’m 35 now and have a similar story leading to how I got here. I always had slight ringing always knew from playing drums and working in Manufacturing it was just normal. Something just triggered it to spike very bad where I B can’t get it off my mind, it’s been a few weeks and it’s terrifying to think of living like this forever. Thanks for giving me hope that it will subside sometime. I’m going to take my hearing seriously from here on out.

Is the secret of tinnitus that when the ear hairs are slightly folded, they touch the neighboring ones and an electrical impulse is sent to the brain ..because how else to explain that someone has only minimal hearing loss and has permanent tinnitus ... and someone who has total hearing loss does not tinnitus ... an example of my neighbor who can't hear anything without hearing aids and doesn't have a bit of tinnitus ... my thesis is that her cochlear sensory hairs have fallen off ... they are not folded ... and they can't touch the neighboring ones ... maybe that's where tinnitus develops

I'm a drummer who didn't start until I was 39 yo. I went to many loud big concerts and local shows starting at age 16. One night about 20 years ago, the guitarists turned up their amps really loud in our new rehearsal location. They did it again the next week. Dudes, you have got to turn it down! That's when it started full-time. Previously, it would diminish after a day or two. It has gotten progressively worse over the years compounded by the occasional times I forgot my plugs. I tried like hell to get my last bass player to turn down with no luck.
It is really loud now and I have been playing less frequently or outdoors whenever possible. I wear noise canceling headphones when I play and have requested more visual cues. When not playing, I keep a white noise machine on 24/7, and a fan in the warmer months to help mask it. I recently saw a headline that said something about tinnitus induced dementia which has me somewhat concerned as that runs in my family. I have to research it and inform my neurologists about it.

Musicians have selective hearing. We can concentrate on what we want to hear. After 50yrs in the job I have a hiss at times but ignore it & playing is OK. Trouble = when mixing. I don't know if a line-in is clean or not. Still, you do it anyway & see if someone else hears something irregular.
Lesson = Music doesn't have to be LOUD to be exciting. More Musos playing smaller venues creates more diversity & more work for all of us.
Rock Stars & their greedy managers have a lot to answer for.
VOLUME is only one part of expression.
Excuse my aging crankiness. Just glad I don't have to play those gigs any more to pay the rent.
    Thanks for this great video.

I live in San Diego and you may not think that the weather systems come in and go out but they're pretty much every 3 days something going on. Maybe one day I'll be able to understand it. It's almost as though I don't want the really quiet days because when the really bad days hit it's even more shocking seems crazy to say.

Dr. Thompson, thank you for all your information, I have few questions and information if you could consider answering. I've had tinnitus for over 30 years caused by a faulty smoke detector alarm. if I have tinnitus in my left ear, should I wear earplugs in both ears? I have heard that earplugs can actually trap the tinnitus sound in and sound also can trigger the tinnitus coming in from your eyes, nose and mouth. When I got to the dentist I was told not to wear earplugs because the drilling and cleaning tools can trigger tinnitus from the inside of you mouth. The worst part of all is I play drums in a bagpipe band and the pitch of these instruments is the worst case scenario. I wear an earplug and industrial headphones on my left ear while practicing music indoors and musicians earplugs called Vibes the rest of the time performing outdoors. Thanks for all your help and work on the issues many of us are having.

I have played electric guitar since 1969. I developed tinnitus through an ear infection about 11 years. In my opinion you should no longer expose yourself to any amount of loud music. Why? Because it can get much worse with additional hearing damage. I haven't been to a live show since I got tinnitus and I have switched to playing only acoustic guitar. Anyone who tells you that you can continue to expose yourself to loud music is giving you very bad advice. Continued exposure to loud noise is a terrible idea. This realisation is a very hard to deal with if you are a professional musician.
