I keep hearing that word "budget"... and keep seeing carbon fiber pieces on a race-spec Mini with two engines... must be one hell of a budget.
You can buy sheets of carbon fibre and build virtually anything you like!(common sense being the driver) Building,(and fitting) a roll-cage yourself can save a lot of money. The rear engine and tranny unit? Who knows where he got them.....a salvage yard, insurance write-off etc? You can save money by doing as much work as you can personally. Buy a Caterham-7 right out of the box as a kit, and see how much money you can save. Time is the greatest outlay, and I can tell you, working on any project like that in the video is very hard going.I'll bet he had a lot of help.::)
***** dude, if you made minimum wage you make more than 15k/yr. what country are you from?
***** Adjust for different currencies. 15k euros is about 20k US dollars
glassfiber with carbon over :)
***** 30 grand is nothing for a race car. New vehicle development for even non-race cars runs in the billions.
I like the passion and pride the guy shows that's missing from a lot of owners.
Like TG USA? They talk like they have a hand up their rear ends.
Agreed, definitely a refresher to see somebody researching and fabricating versus just buying parts.
AMENNN !!! :-))
I agree. It’s because he is 100% invested in the project. Not just invested financially, he is the guy that had to wiggle the thing to squeeze it in next to the other thing and make it work. The pride he has 100% equity in it. He deserves to be proud.
I want to see this on a WRC stage so bad.
WRC wouldn't have it, but it's ARA legal
GOD I LOVE THIS. What lots of people don't think about is how light that car actually is. And 500 hp might not be SUPER impressive to some people used to watching Jay's show (having some 1000 hp and up cars) that's impressive for a little mini. Not to mention whenever you do a 2 engine car, the torque to hp ratio is just unbelievable. I bet that thing pulls like a beast. So awesome.
jay's face while driving that was great, says it all, he looked terrified
"Obviously you are doing this on a budget.." As he holds a carbon fiber rear hatch
lol
hahahha
Thats "on a budget" to Jay ;) haha
Lmao
Hey guys not a pro. How much would this exact twin engine mini cost. As is in this show. This exact vehicle. PLEse an estimate would be great thanks so much
This looks like a really interesting little project, everything looks done to a good standard I don't know why the builder seems slightly embarrassed by it, it looks brilliant fun.
"more money than brains" "done on a budget" pick one, jay...
+MrGnarman Well if you have like no brains it works.
+MrGnarman Why not both...
I suppose so!
MrGnarman it was a big budget?
This is actually a fantastic (hidden) insult.
I want one for no reason. That look of Jay when the tiny car accelerates, priceless.
That's probably the coolest sounding car I've ever heard!
Motherbrain Jr it sounds like a race all by itself
lol with two cars at least... XD
Motherbrain Jr It sounds like a race car with another race car behind it.
A car raceing with itself. XD
+Motherbrain Jr LOL !!!
That blue S2000
Thezkguy it’s on another show.
Although it is incredibly impracticle and seems like a tuning nightmare, that is extremely cool
Race cars don't tend to be terribly practical anyway :)
Hey baby remember me
Damn, that car sounded fucking incredible!
It really did man
Its a beautiful racing car , even Jay leno was impressed by the engineering and innovative thinking this guy put into his project. Congrats.
This guy obviously has more brains than money, you have to respect a guy who does the work himself.
Man, I gotta make it a goal in life to one day walk through this garage and see all the beautiful cars up close and personal. Maybe the Navy will take me west coast one day.
With my “budget,” I’m going to replace the old hood emblem on my 2003 mini! One day, I might even replace my drivers side headlight! We are making big strides over here at the Wilson Garage.
That sound!... 2 exhaust notes in harmony... brilliant!
Two engines.
The sound it makes is basically a lamentation of muscular gods.
500hp in a mini.....my kind of car!!!
No it's not you gypsy
You are my type of human.
even if they run at the same time. its not going twice as fast.
minis fuckin blo
theres a guy who has a single engine min with 500hp r56, on DMO Deejays channel, very cool stuufffff
The way he looks at the camera @ 10:38 lol
Haha....but how would you describe that look?
its the look what go's well with the words.OH YES
I think Jay might have offended him when he said "More money than brains" because he's obviously built it himself on a budget...I think he should have said "more brains than money" :] :]
I agree with Jay, the guy didn't have much money, and even less brains
I think he said that because it would be a lot cheaper and less complex to buy a single engine that makes 500 horsepower. However, this really isn't the case because it was cheaper to buy an additional 250 horsepower engine than to scrap the engine already in the mini and buy a 500 hp engine. I suppose he could have sold the engine out of the mini to offset the cost of a larger engine, but the cool factor goes way up when you have two motors.
peralez2383 You are calling the guy stupid, but let me ask you, could you build something like that? My guess is no.
Jay said "it's easy when you have more money than brains." He was talking about guys like himself who can afford to build anything they can think of. Point in case, Jay has a rapid prototype machine for making parts that costs more than my house. So, he was complementing this builder on his hard work and what he was able to accomplish on a budget.
EZ Emond u missed it. he kinda throws it at the end of the vid.
he DOES say more money than brains.
he obviously means that this is a cuckoo project and not calling the guy a moron.
the sound of both motors and superchargers when it's headed towards you was hands down the coolest sound i've ever heard.
It sounds like 2 4-bangers racing each other in unison. Uncanny. Great episode. I love the enthusiasm.
The two engines revving at the same time sounds so weird. Must be like a stereo effect with the sound lol
yes hehe also 1 pipe exits at the side and the other at the back, surround race sound
this guy is such a geek about this car.. and i love it. sounds amazing.
It's nice to see someone so excited about a build he did himself, and what a cleverly done project. Props to this guy.
"He's got a mini, he can make it do things for ya". Lol love Jay's one liners
Hey Jay, can you get a car from Vector Aeromotive in your show? Preferably the W8... thanks.
That would be super cool. One of my all time favorite supercar is the Wiegert Vector W8
Damned right!!!!
venom800 supercars*
It had a three speed transmission in it
@@venom8008 gran turismo 2 had that beast on it loved the look of it.
Got a tail light out. lol
+Bob Papadopoulos I noticed that to. Thats probably why its streetlegal :D
+Bob Papadopoulos its a racecar they even say that....."canyon carver" i belive was the term
zachary cuskelly It's a joke. My comment even says "lol".
"Context clues" I believe is a term you need to look into.
Jay is such a classy and chill dude. He had a grin getting in and driving that mini, you can tell he genuinely enjoyed it and was interested.
Hee-hee-heee... You can tell that you really enjoyed this little dual-engined MINI COOPER Jay, and so did we. I have a heart for these types of home grown jobbies myself, (I often do them myself)!
how fast does it go in reverse then.... LOL
$30,000!!! DAAAAAAAAAAAAM
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!
Jerry Maguire I would have to see the engineering inside myself to tell if it's real or not, but I don't image Jay would let a fake car get on the show.
Besides, there's no such thing as impossible
^^ it would be a beast for sure!
Why vtec LOOL
Nikolay Stoykov Because there is a large community dedicated to doing that specific swap
dasdew2 Its 30k for the car not for the car with the mods.
The twin whining coming down the street man thats a sweet ride
Absolutely love it. It's one of those things that sounds crazy and ridiculous, but it actually works, and looks like it works well.
more money than brains... I think its the other way around jay.
Knights2theEnd I was thinking the same thing
Knights2theEnd not really it’s the stupidest shot I’ve ever seen, two engines? What is it a boat. Dumb as hell. So yea more money than brains.
Fantastic! Very different and boy does it looks like fun.
When I was in Germany EuroSport used to show a drag racing series of "rat racers" that were twin engined racers like this, first example I've seen stateside and it's with my beloved R53, love it.
Reminds me of a Group B car, only Group B never used two engines.
That is great, thanks for showing it to us!
its like two mini's had a conjoined twin! BAD ASS!!!
I'm sure he meant more brains than money at 10:35. :)
I love that Jay does this kind of stuff.
Very cool indeed. Jacques has done a great job! Can't wait for the 1.9l version.
That's like a modern day group b rally monstrosity lol. I like that mini a lot.
it should be in that class
The whole way through jay looks like he is thinking "blah! blah! blah! now can I drive it!"
seriously impressive! and it was SO COOL to hear both engines spinning at the same time.. like 3D for hearing.. neato!
This Mini is so insane looks fun to drive. Great video and kudos to JHack for his ingenuity and hard work.
This guy had the same idea as me but instead I had a 2009 clubman and I would hollow out everything in the front and make that my cargo and on the back end, I’d put in a e46 m3 engine
really cool thanks for sharing jay
This car is great. Nice full walk through and talking about the car, i love jay leno garage.
Jay is a great presenter, he is naturally curious and does not try to dominate the conversation, his guests must feel very much at ease with him.
I'd like to see more of that blue Honda S2000 in the background! Looks neat!
This car sounds amazing!
i really like how you have reinvented your self with these videos!
I love the look on Jay's face as he hits the gas... just priceless...lol
Jay's response the the custom name dropping wing? " let take look at the interior of the car of the car. " 7:15 HAHA Jay's funniest moment ever.
"I put a new engine in my car, but I didn't take the old one out. Now my car can do the speed of light." - Steven Wright
AWESOME build!!..I had a 2005 mini S and often dream't of a rear engine add..great stuff!! :)
The sound of this is the coolest thing ever.
That's pretty cool...
But really it's: "More brains than money" that sparked this project.
Superman To err is human, that's what makes him awesome.
Yeah, he seems like a great guy, and is smart enough to use his money to surround himself with smart people. But I remember reading his 1000hp Toronado project article in Popular Mechanics years ago. He stated that it was originally "front wheel drive and with a transverse mounted V8"; half right. I had a Toronado at the time, and knew that it had an longitudinal mounted engine. Since then I've still enjoyed Jay's automotive endeavors, but know that he is the passion (and funding), not the expert.
Exactly. I dislike that he always repeats stuff the guests say to somehow seem knowledgeable, but I still love the man. I've watched his talkshow since I was like 12 and learned a lot of English whilst doing that too. Nowadays I just watch these. :)
It freaks me out, that the gearwheel is not spinning when I change the video quality.
This is incredibly inspiring! Thank you for posting this
That is one pure evil engine note! Two Roots blowers, two unmuffled four-bangers - twice as loud as one of each, and mostly revving in sync but phasing in and out like a twin-engine plane.
Next stop Pike's Peak!
thumbs up for the apexa blue s2k in the beginning on the right :)
sk2's are horrible. You should be banned from commenting, forever
This is not Lora Kesenci, goodbye
Lora Kesenci seems like you never drove an s2k...best car i've owned yet
Jay Leno is my hero. He’s livin’ the dream.
I enjoy seeing mechanical talent from those who think outside the box. What great funRoger the scrapologist
As a Mini Cooper fan, This is my dream ride!!!
I love more "money than brains" projects
lol definitely suggesting that guy has no idea what he is doing.. I think it's great that he has gone out and done what he wanted but i am with jay on this.. that guy didn't have alot of facts and figures, he came across a little uneducated.. from my point of view anyway..
nathan Field Not exactly, I've heard jay use that saying before on himself. The point being comming up with some crazy outlandish idea and then throwing money at it. The idea that a sane brain would never agree to this and money taking over the decision making process. This guy just put 2 motors in a car and runs them in sync. I wouldn't call him uneducated. He may not be good at explaining things but that is not the same as
not knowing what he is doing. His greatest failure is not knowing he can't do this. So with blind ignorance he went ahead and did what he didn't know couldn't be done.
writerconsidered yeah I guess your right, sometimes I have the exact same problem when it comes to explanation of my ideas :P
...Like The Current USC Football Program? ;-)
Great work! Gutsy. I've seen reviews done later and seems he really got this beast dialed in!
This channel is great where has it been all my life. Being an engineer I Love engines and metal. I just wish I had the money for these projects.
That thing looks like it would beat the hell out of other manufacturers in rally, if it had some rally tuning!
Absolutely no way, WRC or Rallycross cars are absolute freaking bonkers, just on another lvl!!! In the case of rallycross cars even more powerfull and by the way anything else than build on a "Budged". I can tell you for shure, even Jay Lenos face expressions would have looked different driving one of these. ;) But still a great build thou. It's his own, as long as he loves it he should go on, with this one. :D
If you want to see some great rally cars. Theres a teenager in New Zealand who built a Peugeot 206 with a 2011 Ferrari f1 engine thats rear engine AWD and sounds like a monster down the tracks. From first hand experience and a couple of ride alongs i can say that its truly a passion project that paid off massively
I haven't seen a twin engined car for years.
The last one I remember was a 900 bhp golf gti about 20 years ago.
I always wanted to do it in my old skyline but never got to.
So, Yoda is a car guy.
+Mariux - car and drugs, nothing better.. lol
Rafael Ferreira xD
When I was in high school a twin engined Mini raced in the Targa Florio. I don't remember how it finished, but it was one of those really cool ideas like the Formula 1 4wd Ferguson P99.
This man has made the car that (as a former automotive R&D guy), I have had in the back of my mind (waiting for me to get rich enough to be able to essentially throw tens of thousands of dollars away like used confetti), since the mid 1980's. Having electronically controlled throttles are the key to making any twin engine car project reliable enough to be anything other than a toy with the intermittent embarrassment option as standard equipment.
Great job! 🎯
i think jay should run top gear usa ;D
didnt think many people would agree with me! he should deffo do now he leave tonight show!
james hartley
I would agree with you, however even then I am not sure it could live up to the original. Seems like even the other TG's such as Germany and Australia suck as much if not more than TG USA.
xSleek34x
to be fair they are all good not all to my taste but hey something different! its like when TG USA made the truck episode after UK but i think USA one was so much better while the UK mainly just well pissed about lol. you know what i mean haha big thumbs up to all TG teams
Wrong
james hartley Top gear can tell the truth about the cars they test because they are funded by the BBC which dose not rely on advertising to generate revenue as it is funded by the tv licence fee in the UK thats why they can take the piss like no other motoring magazine program
We need moar! Aweaome build I wanna see lap times.
Gotta love a budget and creative thoughts and killer u turns.
That looked awesome! Please do one racing it on the track. The ultimate driving toy
Jay, granny shiftin' not double clutching like you should.
Shogun Festiva in the background of his shop!
WOW! It even sounds like an old Mini! Nice
This is one of my fav episodes ever.
PS: J seems to be high lol
And also in the "O SHIT I am so going to lose my license" state of mind.
If you look back in your racing history, the Fittipaldi Brothers, Emerson and Wilson raced a twin engine VW Beetle back in the 60s against Porsches and Ferraris in Brazil. But the just bolted two 4-cylinder engine together and made it mid-engine. And back in the pre-war GP days Alfa ran a Bi-motor GP car.
You JUST noticed? Dude is stoned in every show
It's a natural high, it's called adrenaline rush.
Sounds awesome!
popdog200 Sorry bud, I forgot, people can't have opinions. Only slow downhill mountain bikers can.
I love the way popdog is the only one who likes his own comments.
look at jays head as he hits the gas in the beginning...awesome
Race cars like this always amaze me
Who saw that cool S2000.
me hahaha
Perfect gymkhana car
Jay, I really love your show... Jay Leno's Garage.. of course, lol. You're good on the the Jay Leno show, don't get me wrong, but dude, you really do all of us gear heads a huge favor by showcasing some of the most amazing cars we've ever seen, not to mention, you have an awesome collection as well, please keep it up good sir!!!
Awesome! That thing can rip and carve!
Matt Farah, please get this in Tuned
lets see that s2000
What a fun project. Sounds great!!!
As someone who has a stock R53 mini cooper S, I find it so strange hearing a familiar sounding startup but with a vast difference once the engines begin
"obviously you're doing this on a budget" says Jay as Jaques removes the bespoke carbon fibre tailgate...
apparently not what we would call a budget lol
onlyoneidiotlikeme Actually, you'd be surprised; Jaques has quite the background in composite work. He did all of the carbon fiber work on the car himself, including the molds for that tailgate. So I guess time is where the big expense was!
" I took tow 1 liter motorcycle radiators ........ I figured they would have about the capacity I needed for a 2 liter".
This guy is sick. Wonderful job.
Really enthusiastic about his work. Fun!
the old twinis are awesome this is brilliant work too on a good budget.
