    Jay Leno is a special person. He has remained an ordinary guy who made the big time but never let it go to his head. Since leaving the Tonight Show when was the last time anyone saw him wearing anything but his jeans and blue long sleeved shirt with the sleeves rolled up. A true blue gearhead for life. Thanks Jay...…..

    The story of when they won LeMans is one of the greatest stories in motor racing.
    Look it up on CZcams.
    When this car first came out, it was so far ahead of anything else it was unreal.
    What was even more remarkable was that McLaren wasn't even a road car manufacturer at the time.
    The Greatest car of the 20th Century and the greatest car story of the 20th Century.
    The more you learn about the F1 the more it will seem like a fairytale. But it all happened.

      That was a great story but please remember that Ford was one of the biggest car companies in the world at that time. McLaren is a tiny company in comparison and they didn't even make road cars before the F1. The GT40 was made to win at LeMans, the F1 was a road car.
      I don't want to ruin your memory, in your mind it is the GT40 but the McLaren story was something else.

    I remember in 1995 (I think), while walking my spaniel in the Charlestown section of Boston, seeing one of these rumbling slowly down Main Street in front of me, as I stood and gaped, with jaw dropped like a six year old kid.
    It had to have been owned and driven by Boston billionaire Herb Chambers, owner of a string of high-end car dealerships in the Boston area and a true auto aficionado; he owned a large condo at the tip of Constellation Wharf in Charlestown, nearby the U.S.S. Constitution ("Old Ironsides"), where he was evidently heading for home.
    I also remember thinking that those cars were not street legal at the time (which was true). But as the one probate lawyer said to the other, "where there's a will, there's a way".

  • @GlassTopRX7
    @GlassTopRX7 Před 6 lety +40

    In the early 90's this car was unmatched, with a top speed of 232mph, 0-60 in 3.4 seconds 1/4 mile in 11.6@125. The later versions would top out over 240mph and with 10 second 1/4 mile. It remained the fastest production car in the world for over a decade. With a few very subtle tweaks to the body work and wheels it wouldn't look out place if sold today.
    In 1992 the Corvette was running a 14 second and change 1/4 mile with a 0-60 of 5.7 just for perspective.

    • @vika0194
      @vika0194 Před 6 lety +2

      GlassTopRX7 this is not a Corvette. Corvette was never considered a supercar. It was never considered a fast car. It’s a muscle car. If you wanted to use perspective you could have used a Lamborghini.

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 Před 6 lety +1

      The sixties Corvettes were absolutely considered supercars. The term dates back to the 20's however the Corvette has only recently been considered a muscle car as the definition for the term has expanded. The 60's AC Cobra's and Corvettes had no real rivals back when power by their 427 (7L) V8's and were referred to as supercars. The term was replaced with GT cars in the 70-80's and towards the late 80's to now come to mean really expensive fast sports cars. The later is what you are saying.
      The term muscle car wasn't really even used back then although it's disputed when it was first coined and the meaning has evolved with time just like supercar. Originally it only included 2 door mid sized cars with a large displacement V8, designed to dominate the drag strip. A mid sized car with the base V8 wouldn't have been considered a muscle car. Today it includes any powerful car with a front engine, typically a V8 and any car from the 60's through mid 70's.
      That's not really the point though it was just to contrast how huge of a leap it was over a standard performance car of the time. Perhaps I should have chosen the 90's ZR-1. Which only mustered a 5.1s 0-60 and a 13.1@112 1/4 mile with a top speed of 180mph. I chose to use a common car that everyone would be familiar with in it's typical form.

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 Před 6 lety +3

      There was no car at the time to compare it with. One the closest was the Ferrari F40 which cost about half as much. In terms of performance it was closer in the 1/4 mile with a 12.1@122, 0-60 4.2 Top speed was about 33mph slower 199mph, didn't really handle all that well and didn't even have a finished interior. At no time while it was still in production did any car best it in 6 years and it would take the Veyron in 2005 to dethrone it as the faster production car.
      The F1 was actually the first hypercar before the term hypercar was coined.

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 Před 6 lety +3

      The XJ 220 was only fast in a straight line and still slower. Like the F40 it had turbo lag for days. Neither could match it in handling, the F1 is very special in automotive history. It set the bar very high in 1992 in speed and handling with a timeless body design. That's only happened a few times in 100 years of cars.

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 Před 6 lety +2

      You do realize that most supercars today hit 100 in under 7 seconds with hypercars under 5. We are pretty much at the traction limits of tires today.
      As for ring time I'm not aware of a official one, and with their value in the 14 million range today I doubt there would be one in future. Plus the advancement in road tires today has led to much faster times today and it improves pretty much every year. Today's competition street tires are better than race tires from 2005.

    I love that it's story started with a few guys sat 'round a table assembling a nice-have list.
    I love that when it arrived on the scene in the early nineties ALL of its rivals who had been snapping at each others heels to claim greatness (the Diablo included!) were blown out of the water and that the industry had to sort of recalibrate itself.
    I love that it pretty much remained unchallenged for the best part of two decades and when the day that the Veyron arrived many remained unconvinced that the F1 had been relegated to being Number 2 in town!
    And it looks amazing! Still!!

    There’s a video on CZcams from another F-1 owner that says that it’s an incredibly expensive car to own. Not just the price but that even if it sits in the garage and doesn’t move it costs money. Parts have time and mileage limits before they have to be replaced. I’ve seen this on aircraft but never on a car. If you want to sell the car you must have kept up with the required maintenance and parts replacement. There are only 2 places in the US where the F-1 can be serviced! The car has to be trucked there and the service performed,plus for some items like new tire it has to be run on a race track by a certified McLaren test driver. Obviously Jay can afford this,and I guess anyone buying an F-1 would know or quickly find out. Paying $70+k a year for upkeep is unheard of.

But what’s even more amazing is that for $20,000 give or take you can buy an excellent car that will get you everywhere and last a long time. My point is: the best car of the 20th C. would likely be a Volvo that can drive a million miles, or the VW Bug for being inexpensive and reliable, or Toyota which gets the bast customer satisfaction ratings ever by far.

    I'd vote for the 1961 Jaguar XKE. Enzo Ferrari called it the most beautiful car ever made. Top speed was 150 mph, 0-60 under seven seconds with rack & pinion steering, independent suspension, etc. In 1961 the XKE's design, innovations, and performance revolutionized the auto industry. The McLaren is an amazing car, but I think in terms of impact you have to consider the Jag. Plus it was a car that only the super rich could afford.

    I can't disagree w/Jay re the F1 but I think you can't talk about significant cars of the 20th Century without a nod to the Model T because it was the vehicle that put the ordinary folks on wheels and gave mobility & a sense of Freedom to millions - it's impact was worldwide.

    Lots of debate about how to define “the greatest”. Well you could choose “which is most reliable”. And pick some car that can do a million miles. Or you could choose which sold the most. Or which was first in mass production. Or which was sold in most countries. Or which has most examples still running after 25 years. But in this case, he is talking about the greatest based on a combination of it being leagues ahead of its direct rivals in its category, even creating its own category and staying there for so long. And so many people who enjoy the pure experience of driving wanting this car more than an other for the longest period of time

      Boyd W - Dr. Richard Schulze - The American Botanical Pharmacy - 1-800-HERB- DOC, HERB-DOC.com. Raw garlic alone or colloidal silver, will do the trick. Turmeric or hot pepper will probably do it, individually. Incurable diseases were whipped some time ago. You're not supposed to or allowed to know that. Go ahead make fun of it and me because of course the doctors always have your best interest at heart. I hope you don't believe that last sentence is true. Allopathy is about covering up symptoms. If they alleviate the symptoms and you feel better, you. aren't cured and will remain a customer. It's a money making machine. Why do citizens of the USA pay ten times as much as any other country in the world for lousy pharmaceuticals? The disparity in cost is probably worse than that in 3rd world countries. Natural methods generally only have positive side effects. That can't be said about pharmaceuticals.

      I got Lyme disease between 1981 and 1984. The longer a person has it, the farther it gets into harder tissues like tendons and possibly bones. April 2015 to January 2016 I was on Metronidazole and Minocycline. Then I was on nothing for four months when Lyme returned with a vengeance in May of 2016 when it attacked my nervous system. I started having trouble walking. So if there is something that will completely cure me from Lyme disease that I have had about 35 years it would be a miracle to me.

    I had the opportunity (chance) to try one here in Europe. That's a wonderful car BUT being low and in the central position makes the driving quite tricky on nanow roads. Same driving in town, it was hard to drive in narrow streets. I'm used to driving left and right hand drive cars, but being in the middle is odd.
    That said, it was my first & only time that I drove such car, so I was quite scared and extremely causcious. I've never been that nervous driving a car!
