      they decided to target the upper mid range value market because they just didnt want to try to compete for the top spot..... Something they never really tried to make up for till the HD7970 came out.

      Yeah that and ancient laptops. Laptops in particular it gets really hard to sort things through just based on how much they vary from generation to generaiton compared to their desktop peers and it's especially hard to test because you can't just have a test bench and swap things through controlling for variables. This becomes more important when you've got people buying old used hardware for whatever reason.

      Oh God lul, yeah I'd imagine. I've had some much older games where the vsync didn't work and for some reason Enhanced Sync didn't either, and so I was basically regulating my game's performance by just downclocking the GPU into something ridiculous like 0.9v and 1300mhz, and still getting almost engine breaking framerates at 1440p. I wonder how many other people have done that. Thank God for Adrenalin, being able to just set custom profiles for each game is incredible. I've got some that really push it. Meanwhile even Witcher 3, The Ascent, and Division 2 all get something like 85fps+ at all ultra settings. Very first thing I did was benchmark Ashes of the Singularity. And then it blackscreened lol. Spent a day trying to figure out which undervolt scheme to use until realizing I could just turn FreeSync off and it fixed the problem. It gives such crazy performance and is so overvolted from the factory I basically just leave it undervolted all the time and probably the only game I'm super looking forward to that'll tank at ultra is TotalWarhammer 3 (TWH2 even drops below 60fps occasionally).

      iGPU stills sucks donkey balls though. Like I was kept being told by how "great" APU's supposedly are now, and then I look at the benchmarks. :|
      It's playable in a sense sure, but even a GTX 770 from ages ago completely blows it out of the water. Moreso on Iris, Jesus Iris sucks. I don't think I'm taking iGPU too seriously until the new RDNA2 lineup. That might actually be powerful enough to properly game on. 720p low isn't what I'd consider "being able to play the game" especially when it's still in the 30s fps. 900p sure, maybe even 768p I could vaguely put up with on high and with good framerate results, but Vega 8 even is just shockingly bad unless it's really old. People talked about it like it was playing on a 970 or RX 570 or something.

    • @pandemicneetbux2110
      @pandemicneetbux2110 Před rokem +1

      @@sweetsurrender815 I am saying that those bold claims about "iGPU is just as great as dGPU almost!" are copes or full of crap because I saw those benchmark reviews on things like Xe and it sucks AZZ compared to even a much much older graphics. Like, we're talking about comparisons to a dusty old laptop GTX alleged 770 tier, or a GTX 960m at best. I can't recall the stats correctly atm but basically it's a comparison between something doing 720p low settings on a brand new APU vs 1080p med-low settings on an old budget graphics card.
      I'm not saying 720p is bad on a small screen either obviously, wtf you need 4k on a handheld, but it's just that it's an apples and oranges thing to me. But then I am also guessing that's just because I actually used to game on just all CPU back when all the rich kids had some Voodoo whatever going on and we all had our Pentium II's. So, yeah, we're talking about playing triple A gaming on Pentiums type of memories. So if I can then go and say well here's your graphical accelerator card, and it's a 7700XT, and then here's your 13700k, or even just here's a GTX 980 vs a Zen4, and the now old af GPU is beating the tar out of the CPU then I can't really take that seriously. I'm not shitting on people on a shoestring budget mind you, nor on these advances, just that APUs got way more hype during the shortage than ever deserved, and now prices are stabilizing that even if you had a 5700g or something like that it makes sense to just spend a hundred bucks on some used graphics card.

    fun fact, that 649$ MSRP only lasted a few weeks before it was cut to 499$ - AMD's HD 4800 series was insanely competitive for the price - $299 for the 4870 and it matched the GTX 260

    • @pandemicneetbux2110
      @pandemicneetbux2110 Před rokem +1

      Ohhh ok it was this one. Yeah I couldn't remember if it was the GT 240 or whatever it was, but I do remember that tale, on how basically nVidia being nVidia tried to price gouge the fuck out of everyone and scam gamers as usual only their performance was so incredibly poor they got forced to slash the prices of their $650 flagship card to match the better performing AMD $400 card (my memory was something about AMD's $400 card being better than the $650 nVidia, thought it was 200 series). That kind of shenanigans is why despite wanting an nVidia I eventually decided to go with a 5700XT after seeing how it actually performed and realizing getting the 2070 super just for the SLI was stupid (way more stupid than I realized at the time, I did this in mid-2020 lol) and not wanting to get the lacking-SLI-2070, which many of nVidia's Turing cards just didn't look too good, not even the packaging gave a premium feel despite the price (MSI and EVGA were packaged like GI Joes iirc), and wanting a triple fan the only one that really appealed to me was the EVGA one but it cost over $600. So meanwhile the 5700XT Taichi was on sale for $430 plus $20 MIR so I could pay $160 more for the dualfan 2070s that also didn't look good, pay "only" $100 more for the featureless black brick Gigabyte, or get the ultra premium looking Taichi...and lose like 2fps at worst. Apparently it's at parity with 1080ti and 2070s. So the only other thing was RT, but performance was so abysmal on Turing you literally needed upscaling, and DLSS 1.0 was a complete joke.
      Really the more I learned what I was doing the more I realized nVidia's not just expensive because "it's better" anymore, it's just a scam, and even when it was actually "better" like Maxwell it was still a lawsuit worthy 3.5gb worth of scam. I also realized how much I was gaslighted by casuals because for instance I once blamed my sudden weird artifacting on a HD 7570 on "bad AMD drivers" only to realize it was because the fan was so clogged with dust it was overheating because the fan literally wasn't spinning. I cleaned it and worked fine again. I'm not denying AMD hasn't been the best but cmon, I'm going to be a lot less forgiving towards nVidia's bad drivers on a $1200 2080ti than a $350 AMD card, and it's clear to me nVidia does have driver issues, this generation more than AMD (RDNA2 didn't have driver problems but oh boy did Ampere have problems). Basically I just reached the epiphany I was being conditioned to think they had bad drivers so I'd blame any problem I ever had on AMD, despite the fact I've actually had 3 AMD discrete GPUs and their drivers were fine. Software used to suck, but so does nVidia's.
      Moral of the story, don't let the corpos gaslight you into paying more than what it's worth. Turing was already way overpriced back in 2019 and 2020, and the MSRP for Ampere was just nuts. They only got away with this because AMD didn't make a lot of really good high end cards for awhile, but now they do again, and people don't buy up the stack usually anyway and their lower end cards like 60's just flat out completely suck. Yes, the 3060 sucks. The alleged "RTX" 3050 mindblowingly sucks balls hard, at $360 on newegg, when a better perfoming RX 6600 costs like $250 despite the fact even a 3060 is typically slightly weaker than a 5700XT and none of those cards can properly do raytracing anyway because they're too weak.
      I called it in late 2020 too when I told people those TDPs were a worrying sign that pointed to feeling threatened by AMD, but I thought prices might be competitive HA. Now I look at the TDP of Lovelace and to me that's basically just like nVidia's already saying "it's over we lost." They'd do anything to keep AMD from taking the fastest halo product crown, because that's how they got people like me to rationalize buying a shitty x60 card, by wrongly associating that fast $2000 card with the overpriced 60 card. It also has to do with why they usually refuse to drop prices and instead focus on "features" like Hairworks and gaslighting people over talking about the actual raw performance, or getting people to rationalize paying $160 more "for the peace of mind of their drivers" when AMD's drivers are actually fine.

    The GPU situation in mid to late-2021 was so bad I was considering getting one of these since they were still pretty cheap by comparison even to Fermi cards. Nowadays it shouldn't even considered (like Fermi also) except to collect or benchmark. The legacy it has is that it was a huge jump from the GeForce 9800 GTX. Amazing performer for its time.

    Around 2014-2016, I purchased two of these to stick in my original gaming computer that i'd held onto since I was 7 years old, my father and I built it together. - I upgraded it to a core 2 quad Q9650, 8 GB DDR2, and TWO GTX280's! The SLI experience was sub par, but when my friends came over, they played most of these games on those very cards! I eventually upgraded the cards to a single GTX 1050ti so we could play ARK, but otherwise, they held up pretty decently back then!
    I'd love to see 3 or 4 of these cards in SLI!

      I know it's always been kinda a buggy meme machine, but I really do wanna get an old af SLI system set up one of these days with the same appreciation as another guy might have for restoring a classic car or an antique gun. I think if I got ahold of someone's triple SLI I'd just refuse to touch it. It was clearly meant to be the pride and joy build with SLI, and even if it's a better single GPU I just feel like that'd be devaluing it, you know?

    Such a trip down the memory lane with these games! 😁 I was wondering how I was able to play all those games so well back in the day and went to my closet to dust off my old PC. (Yes, I still have it for some reason 😅) and it had Radeon Sapphire HD 6950 2GB card! A bit newer GPU for sure. It was paired with i5 2500K and you are not going to believe this, but a whopping 850W power supply! 😂 That tentacle monster took basically 80% of the space inside the small NTXT case! I think it was caller Lexa Blue Line or something! Motherboard was Sabertooth P67 or something. Back in the day, it was such a great machine. Played thousands of hours with it. Definitely didn't know what I was doing back then, but that's where it all started, building my own computers that is. My first PC ever was a DOS machines before I even went to first grade. 😅 It was given to me by my big brother. Had a few store bought PCs and laptops in between.
    Nowadays my system is Ryzen 5 3600 with 1660 Super on a X570 Tomahawk WiFi, resting inside of Bitfenix Dawn TG with 750W PSU and M.2 NVMe SSD. Planning to upgrade to 4080 Super and possibly either 5800X3D or jump to AM5 and go for 7800X3D.
