- My Kenmore Elite washer wouldn't drain and I was getting OE error messages so I manually drained it, replaced the drain motor and bought a fun new tool to expand the spring on the spring clamp which holds the door boot in place.
The tool is called a tension spring expander and it's super simple looking. I'll demonstrate how to use it.

Man, I've been fighting with this bastard spring for the better part of a week and even with this tool I can get the spring wire in place. Taking the machine apart to get the gasket out was easy peasy and putting everything else back together was a breeze but this spring is driving me bonkers.
You did a great job, I'm impressed
Best tool ever. I tried all the hacks and this tool by far is the best. Thanks for the video, it saved me my sanity
I cannot thank you enough for posting this! No way did I want to spend $75 plus on the LG tool as this entire repair (drain and recirculation pumps) cost me only $50! I fought with the ring for about two hours and finally gave up, and began searching for another solution. That’s when I happened to find your video. Then I went in search of the tool, which was the toughest part of this repair. Only one online company seems to have them - everyone else is out of stock. It took a week to get here, and was $30, but well worth the price as it took me two minutes to put the ring back on. Thank you, thank you!!
This makes me so happy. I’m lucky to have a supply store really close by. These aren’t complex machines. Ive never had a repairman show up to fix one and thought that he knew a whole lot more that I did. He just has a bigger toolbox and a higher hourly rate.
@@JessicaGottlieb Do you live anywhere near Santa Rosa California? I need borrow your tool!
great video. Thx for sharing. Your 'can-do' attitude is inspiring!
I love it when a woman can do her own hardware repair and then teach you how she did it.
Thanks for your video it was a great help, there was no way I could expand that spring by hand. The tool you used gave me the method needed and as I work in a engineering it was quite simple to make my own from screwed rod, nuts and bits of round bar.
Mission accomplished. I used paper clip binder to hold the spring at the 9,12 and 3 o'clock position until I got the spring back to the unstretched position. Thanks for the tutorial.
Just recieved this today and was about to return it. I was expecting the scissor version. Thanks for the video, will used it tomorrow. Wish me luck...
How did it go Jay?
that tool work good for me to
Can you use a pair of flier to hold the round nut then use either electric ratchet at the end to stretch or release the spring?
I need to borrow your tool. Been fighting this spring clamp for two hours.
uggghhh the worst!
Omg. Ditto. I really don’t want to buy a one time tool. 😆
Fantastic you go girl!!!
Thank you!!
You are the bomb! No ring, no man? You would be worth a lot! I got to get me a tool like that....
Wow you’re awesome... ❤️
I did them all with my fingers over the years and you have to put so much pressure on them it mashes them red. Some other brands are much easier but a few are impossible without a second person or the tool
U can do that with a flat head screw driver and a knee. The tool is for the interior tub spring. :)
This looks great! Thank you. How did you get the spring off?
The spring is part of the clamp - you just kind of expand it until the whole thing comes off, the spring stays attached to the metal clamp, it just gets wide enough to be able to remove it.
You just saved my life I n you e to borrow it too lol.
Ya siento que te amo
If I break my washer, would come and fix it? Your hair looks marvelous. You have made me so very happy, I’m so glad you came into my life. (Blood,Sweat, and Tears)
Nice job , where did you buy the tool from and how much ?
I got it from a plumbing supply. It was under $30 after tax.
Actually I do these everyday by hand sometimes I use a needle nose😊😊
Thank ya ma'am!!! ☺☺
Ok, the spring loves to pop off on these if you dont get the 2 ends of the spring on the tool as far as you can and then spread it open...Good luck
Can I borrow it please? BTW, There's another method on CZcams using zip ties...
Can you post a part number? :-) :-)
Tawna
Where'd you get the spring tool?
At the appliance parts store.
Thx
When I go to the Appliance parts store for the tension spring expander, what do I ask for? who makes it? is there a part number? you hand moves too fast to read the label on the packaging. do you have the UPC? or can you post a pic of the label??? TIA (or does anyone else who might have one post info? TIA
just ask for a tension spring expander. it's so long ago I have no idea what part number it was.

If you want you, I'll send you mind. Don't see that I would use it again ( but it does work great ).
If you were a appliance tech. You would have made 344 dollars for doing that. I just did yesterday
My god I'm in the wrong career.
@@JessicaGottlieb lol
@@gregbgregb8487 and you're bragging about it? You're the reason everyone hates appliance techs.
@@fortunatoluchresi8889 that's a good price because that's a job. And those door bellows cost around 150 plus tax for some.
@@gregbgregb8487 I was referring to the replacement of the spring, not the bellows.
Don't buy it for Samsung! Their wire clamps are to cheap. The points on the tool will slip out of the loops on the wire. Use 2 flat tip screw drivers. Start the clamp on the left half of the boot and put one screw driver under the wire at the 2 o'clock position and hold it with your right hand. Raise the screw driver handle up to lock the wire in the groove. Put the other screw driver over the clamp on the right side of the spring with the handle down. The blade of both screw drivers should be in the groove of the boot. Slowly and carefully slide the bottom screw driver to the right and toward the top screw driver. The clamp will be pushed into the groove. It takes some practice but it works.
