  • This guide is every major click you are going to need to make to set yourself up for the defense of Mother Russia. Included in this guide is how to go to war economy in 1936 and how to make sure you have finished your doctrine tree by early 1942 at the latest. I would recommend watching this video and playing a test game of the soviets at the same time to save time. I know the video is long but I didn't know what else to cut. Would recommend watching at 1.25 times speed.

When you get used to infantry German game, you can play with Japan, who has a lot of naval game and helps you to understand this part of HOI4 better. The way: don't rush the purge, do the civs focus first and then the soviet women one, it gives stability and pp, also take the stability advisor and then by being over 50% you lose consumer goods, you can easily go to 450 factories by barbarossa by doing this

The only trick you need to beat them is to defend until they're out of manpower, and then they crumble. But beating the allies after that is where it gets hard.. Really solid buildup. I was really curious to see what focuses you would do and in what order. Since NSB there are so many good focuses in the soviet tree and too little time to do them all.
    They could reduce the time from 70 to 35 days on some foreign policy focuses to allow the player to go down the industry path as well, since it gets locked if you don't do it.
    I was curious what industry focuses you would pick. It was a pretty funny moment when I realized that the answer to that is: none.

    1. What do you think about focuses like this marxism - center - constitution and then found pcdi then 1st purge. And also build only infra in states that have high slotes until war economy. Then you can convert mils with the war economy buff and also the buffs from pcdi.
    2- Instead of going commintern and spanish advisors first go secure administration and go free trade with the 120 pps. Both construction bonus and research speed? Since spanish advisors can be done whenever you want before war ends and secure admin gives also pp and you eliminate pp spending in forge thing to give cg

  • @XinyangZhang888
    @XinyangZhang888 Před 2 lety +6

    I have 2 main criticisms wrt this guide.
    First, paranoia management. It's possible to keep paranoia below 30% reliably (thus preventing random purge events from popping out, allowing you to keep Timoshenko, Voznesensky and Yagoda while avoiding administration purges) with a cost to PP and controlled purges in the navy and air force. This also means doing purge branch focuses because the paranoia reduction is necessary. As such, in my runs I completely avoid Comintern branch to rush purges, industry and agitprop.
    Second, civ construction. I haven't tested this thoroughly but I don't like conversion because it's basically a marginally cheaper brand new civ. I have tried infra build and civ build until Spain and both runs netted me similar civ counts by 1939 (around 120-140). The difference is that because those extra mils were building guns from the very beginning, you are able to greed a little more for more civs, or you can free up more IC for tanks and planes. Another benefit is that more guns can be lend leased to spain in replacement of doing the mil advisor focus. I also recommend building civs 1 at a time instead of queueing up all together in one slot. This is so half-complete civs with less than 15 factories building it can get 15 civs on it, getting it completed faster and raising total factory output because the civ was completed earlier.

    • @71Cloak
      @71Cloak  Před 2 lety +3

      Spending pp to avoid the purges wikl delay appointing your high command guys by quite a bit. Not doing the comintern focus prevents you from sending military advisors to spain which gives a full doctrine worth of army xp.
      Conversion results in a larger industry in the long run. By 1941 it can mean the difference of at least 15 factories.
      I did a whole video on why building one at a time is pointless. You can view it here: czcams.com/video/IDXQMTQd56c/video.html

    • @XinyangZhang888
      @XinyangZhang888 Před 2 lety +2

      @@71Cloak if you don't spend the pp, you may randomly purge your advisors. I once had a choice to either purge Timoshenko or Zhukov. Timoshenko was already my high command, while zhukov was going to be my field marshal. Or a random event may pop out purging Voznesensky (the civ guy) in 1937 or lose 60 pp and gain paranoia. By keeping paranoia low, you can keep Yagoda as your NKVD guy. This restricts your paranoia gain to 3% max and reduces pp spent later. I agree this isn't necessarily efficient, but it reduces uncertainty. XP can be grinded any where from Finland to China so I honestly don't think stacking high command or doing comintern branch is necessary (Timoshenko will do, and Vasilevsky if needed).
      Do you have a record of your civ count at 1 Jan, 1939? I'd like to have it for reference.

    • @71Cloak
      @71Cloak  Před 2 lety +4

      You get a 30% debuff to conversion from civilian economy that is true but you also get a 30% debuff to civ construction so its a wash really.
      I have run 4 scenarios for the soviets with the ai off to see which maximizes factory count for barb. Building infrastructure and converting down to 20 mils results in the highest factory count in july 1941. 2nd place was converting down without building infrastructure. 3rd place was building infrastructure then civs with no conversion. 4th place was no conversion no infrastructure. So converting does make sense, you can try waiting to convert but it should just slow your snow ball down a little.

      21 width infantry have a couple of non combat advantages over 10 widths. They are cheaper per combat width, require less army experience to create from existing templates, and they require less generals and field marshals. Also I'm going to post a video sometime today that shows 10 widths outside of controlled environments actually take more losses than other divisions.
      Multiplayer meta is still kind of up in the air. If your going to play France or USSR and Germany is going tanks then using 21 width infantry of 10 inf 1 at with support at, eng, aa will stand a very good chance of holding. Especially if Germany cheeps out on his tanks. Otherwise, airpower is the new meta for the most part, afterwards tanks still lose the least amount of ic in the long run.

Right now, my run is stopped I might restart but how come I couldn't just send my planes to Spain like you did?

    If you're going full SP mode, first 5 army XP goes to making a 2w template. Spam it for more volunteers, you can get 18 divs to China. I disagree on OI being the best air doctrine to win the air. SD gets more air superiority mission efficiency and agility comes 100XP sooner than OI. OI is good if you're running interception but vs the AI, you can clap their air if you have fighter 2/3 at a reasonable time. Fighter detection doesn't matter when you have 1000+ planes in an air zone or radar which you need for tanks.
    For fighters, 100% get 5 range, especially for Russia air zones the range is critical for mission efficiency. Guns penalize speed/agi, not enough that guns are a penalty but they're way less valuable than range.

    • @71Cloak
      @71Cloak  Před 2 lety +3

      OI and SD have the same air superiority mission efficiency. They are both 20%. OI gives 10% ace generation while air superiority gives none. Having a ton of aces alone is a 3-5% speed and air attack bonus plus 5-10% agility. The fact that agility comes 100 xp sooner doesn't really matter. If your fighting and grinding air xp your going to blow past that before you even notice it. Air detection is important if you have less than 3000 planes in an air zone which is likely to happen when you are trying to establish air supremacy in multiple air zones. Air detection also plays a role in disrupting enemy bombers reducing the effectiveness of enemy cas. Overall, I still think OI is going to help you win air superiority more than SD in most cases. SD does more with air superiority (ignoring the air support mission efficiency bonus for OI) once you have it but not before.
      5 range is not necessary when playing as russia. You own the air bases within the main air zones you are going to be fighting in. Germany 100% needs 5 range when invading russia but the opposite is not true. With only range 3 upgrades I was getting 95%+ mission efficiency in the Ukraine even when using fighters from northern belarus. When you calculate the damage of fighter 2s with max range (assuming 100% mission efficiency because of that) max engines versus fighter 2s with 3 range 5 engines 2 attack with 95% mission efficiency (it never drops below this unless there are factors that max engines wouldn't fix either) you get the following results. F2 5 eng 5 range do 23.76 damage per 1000 fighters and F2 5 eng 3 range 2 att do 24.18 damage per 1000 fighters. 24.18 increases to 25.45 with 100% mission efficiency which was commonly achieved.
      So no, range is not more valuable than guns once you have enough range to ensure 100% (or close to) mission efficiency. That can be accomplished easily by 3 range upgrades on fighter 2s. Basing fighter 2s no range upgrades out of crimea gives 94.1%.

    • @28lobster28
      @28lobster28 Před 2 lety +1

      @@71Cloak Ace generation is definitely nice, especially if you're doing 10 wings. But you can also just make smaller wings and grind aces faster instead of boosting through doctrine. SD gets 5% mission experience gain and 15% extra air superiority so each plane gains XP faster and has more impact on ground combat. OI gets 20% faster training but most planes are sent into combat green (and I think your series shows that Soviet air debuff doesn't really matter, especially with the air spirit). You're totally right on both getting 20% ASME so it really comes down to aces + training vs mission experience + air superiority. I think I still pick SD.
      Range isn't as necessary on the defense but it's still better than guns. Against the AI you can basically ignore the possibility of ever losing an airbase because AI is pretty braindead but vs players, that's not the case and they'll bring way more planes. Range allows you to utilize more bases to stack into a single air zone and improve your trade in that one zone. Usually Barb devolves into Axis having an overall numbers advantage but Soviet able to contest in a single zone due to better placed bases. Range just enhances the defenders advantage and potentially saves you if you unexpectedly lose a base and have to move planes to a more remote region. I don't think guns are bad, but I would rate gun upgrades about equal to reliability upgrades (which is to say, very meh). Range is also important when you counter attack and need to dominate more distant air zones before you have perfectly placed bases.

    • @71Cloak
      @71Cloak  Před 2 lety +2

      @@28lobster28 "SD gets 5% mission experience gain " yeah and OI gets 5% as well. I actually thought it was 25%, I didn't realize the other 20% was training experience. "15% extra air superiority" This has no impact on air combat whatsoever, this only impacts how much the penalty enemy ground force take when you achieve air superiority. If you have yellow air the stat is largely useless. Most people pick SD for the help in winning the air and for the 30% after having won. If you only care about winning OI will help you more. If you know your going to win (or don't have any planes of your own because of air controllers) then you go battlefield support because it gives 30% air superiority and 40% ground support (OI and SD only give 10). The ground support impacts the bonus your divisions get in combat from actively having air support.
      On losing an air base. With lvl 3 range you can base your entire air force outside of the Ukraine on base surrounding the edge and still have 95.9% mission efficiency. (proof: imgur.com/a/OokqzPd) As I showed before, the math supports 95% mission efficiency and lvl 2 guns versus full mission efficiency and no guns.

Considering you need to desperately research the ENTIRE arty/aa/at tree, taking 15% on the arty advisor is better 2) Rocket arty tree is 500 base days of additonal reseatch 3) Rocket Artillery doesnt get the hardness bonus that Mot Inf/Art/AT/AA get, however truck drawn rocket artillery does (but truck drawn RA don't get the extra 30% soft attack, but the normal rocket artillery does) - never understood the difference between Rocket Artillery and Truck Drawn Rocket Artillery. Katyushas are also much more expensive than arty III and a truck (12 IC vs 7). The extra cost, extra research doesn't seem to be worth the slightly extra breakthrough (4 per battaltion) and soft attack (10). Yes, there are some small extra bonuses in Rocketry tree, but SOV can't afford that to make a difference with Germany. Maybe, after, if you want to take on the West. Now Germany, if you were wanting to get into Rockets for Strat bombing and get Jets...that might be worth it as Germany can afford the research.

    pretty good guide, although i think you should not convert right from the start due to the "consumer economy" -30% converting speed, but instead should build infra right up to the spanish civil war where you can change the economy law, besides, going for the left side of "the five year plan" is HUGE, with proper timing, you could have production V and industry V in early 1941, and a whopping amount of 450 factories total (no kidding) - but you have to also choose the "focus on civilian industry" decision from foreign expert ofc. Furthermore, reliability on Soviet plane is ESSENTIAL, since the "Soviet airforce" debuff increase your accident rates substantially, with 80% reliability, 20-30% of your air casualties alone is caused by accident already - so i dont reccommend you getting it as far down as 40%, and in operation integrity tree, you should get it down to the second last doctrine - since it gives you 20% air mission effciency -> help you win the air war even harder

    • @71Cloak

      So I just went back to check the save and looked at the Ukraine which is the main air zone the fighting occurred in. Air Accidents suffered over the course of the war in that air zone was 125 of the 930 total fighters lost. 125 fighters is about 5 days worth of production. Adding in all the other air zones only brings that number up to about 250-300 which is largely insignificant when I ended the war with 6400 fighter 2s in stockpile and another 5300 deployed.
      If you care that much about industry bonuses just spy on a country like Bhutan. If you steal from them early and often you can get multiple 300% industry boost.

    I have the opposite problem, I've literally built up my frontline so strong Germany declares then waits for me to attack because it's suicidal for them. Evidently you can stack enough manpower or have enough forts that Hitler will just air battle the Soviets.
    The 42 thing is impressive but trading off the Navy if you have any dreams of enslaving the world to the Utopia of Communism is the problem I've been working on. Sometimes in my own games the Nazis match me for airpower but I see you and I both end up around the same amount of fighters. I tend to agree the debuff to the Soviet airforce isn't that bad.
    Never tried light tanks with much seriousness but once we got past the 7-2 world I tended to avoid making the unhistorical divisions since the game now allows historical divisions to work.
    Your fear of the purges, I dunno frankly yes if you don't care about the Navy you can pretty much avoid all of it. I've let Stalin have his way with everyone and the only one that truly is painful is the Junior Officers getting purged but even then it's still easy to hold off Germany.
    I kind miss the pre NSB Germany, now that AI could fuck you up. NSB made everything far to easy against the Germans and I do find it pathetic the AI allows you to just not have a navy and never takes advantage.

    Could I persuade you to give some general feedback on the alternate Soviet paths, specifically the Right Opposition? I consider it to be the most moral possible government for the Russians available, and it has some really interesting changes available, so I'd love your take on it.

      What do you mean by moral

      @@x999uuu1 Stalin is a well documented monster of a person. Trotsky was a True Believer who, imo, would have been just as brutal, as he wrote often and emphatically about how he approved of mass violence to further his goals. Many of the Right Opposition leader candidates were still opportunistic and ruthless creatures, such as Zinoviev. Bukharin appears to have been, from what I've read, the only senior Old Bolshevik who ever publicly expressed distress or remorse for the brutality of the Russian civil war, whereas the others generally maintained that their vision was worth any price in blood and their opponents deserved death and worse. That's what I mean. I think Bukharin might have been the most moral leadership candidate, especially since you can avoid civil war, so you end up saving many of Stalin's victims with that path without another horrific civil war

    I justified on Yugoslavia, conquered Czechoslovakia, Romania and Yugoslavia. Spammed fighter I, Germany declared on Czechoslovakia who was my puppet. Conquered Germany. Spammed mechanized infantry divisions with 1 tank for armor bonus; and went mobile infantry mobile warfare, completely crushed allies, blew up their entire fleet with TAC bombers and invaded USA and UK. Kill ratio: 1 million USSR, 20 million allies

    This guide not working. I did exactly the same steps and did't work. I send volunteers to Spain. No Air volunteers options. This force started a battle what never finished. Cannot break the front line, the Fascist won.

      Well winning was predicated on having air superiority. Sending air volunteers does require a dlc. I think its waking the tiger.
      Sometimes you win spain sometimes you lose. It doesnt matter what matter is the army xp and traits gained.
