- Our never ending search for economical Hot Rod fun has led us to flog on a stripper Cherokee XJ,, and as it turns out this thing is the total contradiction of the idea that working with Jeeps is an expensive proposition.
Here's a rundown of all the parts we've secured and a running total of how much bread we've laid out so far.

Please Tony, make a run before any modifications so we can see the improvement
Absolutely! We plan on documenting every run and every modification along the way.
Yes I agree
Yes!
@@UncleTonysGarage Also needs stick figure family stickers for Tony and Kathy and the doggies, except Winnie could be one of those Duster whirlwinds with eyes. :)
You CRACK ME UP, Uncle Tony.... You add up the current cost of
Mission Improbable on a loaf of BREAD
without even comment on it. YOU ARE A HOOT! I LOVE IT!
i loughed so hard when i saw this 😀
great stuff
At least he didn't write the numbers in butter.
Eh, you may have to eat some of the costs, but still not much dough invested. Looks like it’s the breadwinner !
We don't knead any more puns--but I love them anyway.
That price breakdown list looks delicious.
HEH HEH!!!
This way he can EAT his WORDS!
[HOP HOP HOP!]
Need Some Bunya Caulda With That List !!!
I hope he used black butter.
You may have already covered this topic in the past, but something I'd find really interesting is a video explaining how and why does a car loose power over its life (compression leaks, bad gaskets, vacuum leaks, bad electrical grounds, etc.) and how to bring back as much as possible from that lost power when we buy an old car.
Please, please take that replacement ECM (puter) to Dr Art and open it up and install high quality poly caps BEFORE it fries that circuit board. These are not easy to come by. If you have a good one, make sure it stays that way ... 😅
Just search dr art on google or does he have a different url
Suggestion: after you reach a 13.99 yout put 1299$ in it in speedparts to reach 12.99
That’s actually a really cool idea
That’s a great idea!!
Yep, a nitrous kit and maybe valvesprings.
would that be a reference to the old "12.99 for $1299" magazine article series about a 383 road runner?
Yeah Plan z from utg Magazin days and slant 6 plan z from the channel
Love the baguette list Uncle Tony. Definitely need to keep lists on random items happening for a running gag 😂
Pro tip: Use salami slices to stick the bread to the windshield!
When bread is handier than paper, we live in a strange time
@@nicholasagnew2792 if you have to write on a bread roll, do it with a bit of international flair….
Im pumped for this project, making stuff go faster with elbow grease and know how. I still like adding parts to cars, aftermarket, from other vehicles or completely repurposed non automotive stuff. Why outsource the magic of it? So many cookie cutter power recipes, overdone swaps, and fancy parts unboxings. Budget backyard engineering is like an oasis, grass-roots hot rodding with a run of the mill almost mundane vehicle. Nothing is more pure, or rewarding to see succeed.
It might be a good idea to change the capacitors in the ECU before they fail. I am not sure if this can be done without damaging it. It would have to be resealed properly. Give it to Dr. Art to look at.
Just empty every pocket 😂😂😂 I love it
Jerks Erratically Every Pothole. a.k.a. death wobble.
XJ’s and TJ’s with the 4.0 liter are very good vehicles. Newer jeeps, we agree.
I was 8th mile racing my 93 ZJ. 5.2 all wheel drive all the time. The ricers hated the jeep with 200000 miles on it. Never had a valve cover off it. Electrical fan, straight exhaust and lots of stupidity. It moved for 220 hp stock
I saw some jeep guy ripping around in the snow here in Wisconsin. Sounded very v8 and I was jealous haha
Torque wins races! 😁
Mid 15 is about it in the1/4 mile the computer is your blockage get passed that the it's got a fighting chance.but something has to go after market.
@@jumpsuite When I smoked only one crack rock I came up with 10 different ways to hack the ECU and add fuel. It's not a problem if you use the Aryan guide stone
The bread note pad is legendary!!!!!
Thank you! My favorite new project of yours.
LOL, how much BREAD did you spend on the parts.....good one! That is a cool Jeep!
Hahahah
Pastrami and onions and mustard on note-pad paper is the bomb!
@@DanEBoyd Man you can say that again !!!.....UT got a great BAGuette of parts....LOL
I had the same xj. Except mine was an ‘85. 2 door 2wd. But it had the 2.5liter 4 cylinder. When the engine finally died, i dropped a 3.8 buick v6 and 3 speed tranny into it. Super low geared. 0-60 in a little over 3 seconds. Broke the seat right off the first time it hooked traction. Lol. And i was only about 150 lbs. funnest vehicle i ever owned.
I played a similar game with a carburated 4.2. They are very good motors for their intended purpose. Torque, easy to work on and hard to break.
Had a gr3en 96 2wd sport 5 speed 4.0. . Wrecks took its soul but it was a winner
Heh, you could still be using stock parts if instead of putting a new bumper on there, just get a set of extra bumper ends and cut em to fit either side of where it was cut out. Save a few pounds. :)
2X8 wooden board with ornate carvings around its perimeter - and with "Tony" on the left side, and "Kathy" on the right side!
@@DanEBoyd Well, I dunno if a 'dealer option' like that would be allowed. :)
Uncle Tony i need your motivation, just cant seem to get past the procrastination to get some work done on my project.
You might have been better off doing a carb conversion than buying another first year obd2 comfuser, if that's even possible on these. I admit I don't know my 4.0s! Looking forward to this project though, I hope you go all out on it.
Please Please PLEASE do a before and after pass for any porting work you do.
Personally I'd love to see stock and ported 0630 head (the 96-99 casting) compared to stock and ported 7120 head (the 91-95 casting) and then add in the exhaust/intake mods and one day do a comparison between the log style intake manifold (91-98) vs the dual plane "horseshoe" manifold (99+)
many jeep guys like to "upgrade" to the newer manifold but I recall reading that one of the 4x4 magazines dyno tested that newer manifold on an older engine and it was good for something like -13hp. Yes... NEGATIVE 13HP, i.e. 13 ponies ran way never to be seen again.
Be cool to see the improvement from the 1st track run to getting it's best time after improvements
Good luck, Tony.I can't wait to see how this turns out
Been rebuilding my ax15. City on me about yard so need to get jeep running. Swapping to the 3.54's really woke my xj up. Getting rid of all that vacuum to heater helps too. I ditched the ac too. Bored the throttle body and port matched intake to gasket. Got a Rusty's cold air intake.
I wonder if you could just solder capacitors on the top? Just leave the length of leads from the old ones. Just to see if it will work. Check the capacitors after cutting them out.
Got a 98 zj 4.0 for 1300$ 2 years ago and this project interest me because id like to do a few mods to make more powe then stock while looking stock, so far got 2inch bds suspension lift with 4 hole bosch injectors for a start
I have a unicorn WJ I originally bought for the brand new 17 inch tires. Its 2WD Overland edition, oxymoron?, with two tone leather, all the options and the high output 4.7 with 5 speed HD auto as it has the towing package. I'm building it to handle the mountain roads and similar 1/4 times. Luxury sleeper if you will. It was $200 because the pressure regulator was dumping fuel into the vacuum circuit.
cannot wait to see it...thanks tony!
HOWdy U-T-G, ...

This should be a fun series
My buddy in college had that same xj but dark blue. He fell asleep at the wheel at 70mph on I 75, woke up after it rolled 5-6 times. One wheel still attached, and the jeep was unrecognizable. Walked away with only a broken forearm.
When the 265 straight 6 Charger came to Australia, with triple SU sidedraft they were getting 12s down the 1/4mile, better than the 351 Ford Shakers which was only getting low 13s, thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones
Yes, but don't you mean triple Weber's?
Bone stock I think those ran a 17.5 qtr mile time when new so if you can get it into the 13 second range with stock modified parts and without using a aftermarket performance camshaft that will be very impressive for sure.
I understand the rainouts we try to ride motorcycles on weekends and it has been raining the last 4 Saturdays
UNCLE TONY!! Been a fan for quite a while now and I just realized your shop is only 3 hrs from me, I have an 1989 fifth Ave with a stock 318 with some issues but it runs and drives come buy it, it would be gnarly for a drag boat. The odds of you actually reading this post are very low but you somehow read this I'll give you a hell of a deal on it, sticker price was around 22k so I'll give you at least 21k off if I get to meet the Mopar wizard himself!
Loved the bread list first time of seeing that
IMHO that is the best way to buy a vehicle! Total cost is less than 2 car payments.....less than the tax you would pay on a newer vehicle and you do not need to pay big $$ on full coverage insurance!
You have acquired a few of the xj's like I have..lol and two Comanche pickups, both are 5 speeds. One has a 4 cylinder, other is a 4.0.. waiting for warm weather as I don't have a shop to work in... good luck with getting the 13 sec times with it, you can do this stuff.. 😂" get r done " I enjoy your projects and results... keep them coming..
... how >MUCH "bread" you have invested = HILARIOUS !!! =
Excited to see this, but curious about the First Engine Build series? I watched it last year as I have been wanting to go through & rebuild my 2000 XJ 4.0.....well I was out of town for work & started getting low oil pressure after doing a Motor Medic engine flush before my last oil change two weeks ago. It was driving great right until that point. So now hoping for a spun bearing & that I can get away with just new bearings as we are down to one vehicle for our family so I can't take any out of town work.
@UncleTonysGarage ship the pcm to me. Ill fix it even if the traces are bad. Ive repaired many a9p and a9l ford ecu's that suffered the same fate.
When I was a tech at a C/D/J/R dealership, we always said that they spelled Jeep wrong. We always said the should have named them "Junk", even though the ones that were newer were great, the older ones were a constant money pit! 🤣
I've owned 4 Jeeps. A CJ-5, two ZJ's and a CJ-7. I still own one of the ZJ's and the CJ-7. I've found them to be stupidly reliable vehicles. I put 380k on the first ZJ with nothing other than a few crank angle sensors, a couple of starters, a water pump, a valve and sensor in the transmission and the typical wear parts. The ZJ I currently own has 180k in it with pretty much the same progression. If that's a money pit then I guess I don't know the meaning of the words.
@@3rdpig 🤣💩🤣
There was a guy at Great Lakes Dragaway that ran an 80's Comanche i think he ran 11's using mostly modified stick equipment.
Its a 96 so obd2. without the cat your rear o2 wont read properly might throw a code. May loose a little power depends on how pcm compensates. Just a thought.
Italian bread... Love it Paisan!!
Build it into a class legal stocker!! There’s another Jeep inline 6 running stock eliminator!
Do it, you know you want to!!
You might have screwed the pooch on the cheap pump assembly. I have a 96 and went with the crown one. Worked great. Although it was running pretty good with the old pump at 20 psi. Haha.
Bread is the new paper it must be, can't wait to see how it turns out!
I worked at Fox Hills Chrysler Jeep Eagle plymouth 1998. we had a 360 ZJ all wheel drive
I was challenged that it could beat me off the line and in a 1/4 mile
The engine made around 250 hp
My car 1990 Mustang LX
Bought it new
They were fools.bi out 100s down
My stang wasn't stock and i drove on cheater slicks
Winser jr heads , b303 came edkebrock performer intake. Edlebrock 650 carb. DUI high energy ignition.
Full headers 2.5 pipes into 2.5 flowmasters .
3:55 posi,8.8 after market trailing arms. Better clutch , line lock.
A lot more.
It stood no chance as my stang could hook up hard..
I loved the looks on their faces
We made several passes on Lilley Road in Plymouth michigan right next to the dealer where i worked
Was fun
"As economical as possible" sounds like a polite way of saying Tavo, or in your case Tony, TAJO 😂
Cool idea!
I would give my eye teeth to find an xj with those specs that clean.
My buddy had a pfi 4.0 5spd 2 door 2wd Cherokee. Stock ran 16.30's. You have a ways to go but I have faith. If anybody can do it you can. How about some head porting and hooking up a bottle.
$1650... That's an impressive amount of bread 😄
Now this is entertainment!!
What gear ratio do you plan on running? Better question, what was the lowest gear offered by Jeep that year?
I noticed plan z motor is with out a home at this time do you not have a pristine dart that you painted green or was it a duster, the 4 barrel equipped motor could look real good in that engine bay.
Hey Tony! Just saw your perfect entry level classic vid. When do you want to see my 67 Galaxie500? Runs great! Unless you stomp it. Then it stalls. Doesn't die though! I'm thinkin power valve.
Will be interesting when engine fires up, Oh snap head gasket blown or rod knock,,,,waiting for the Tony Luck
Hey Uncle Tony! Ive got a 64 Dodge Dart I cant get rid of cuz no title. Want it as a parts car? The sad part is, The car is in complete working condition.... Starts, runs, brakes, shifts, no problems at all.
Can you do a video on using Naptha in your fuel??? Had a chemist teach me this trick! But does it work to actually increase octane? Just like unscented nail polish remover?
Good luck using stock parts!!!!
What. You don't think he will use nitrous or a turbo? Both work great with stock replacement parts if you don't get too crazy with it.
I guess he didn't say no power adders. A turbo will work great!@@vilefly
good luck
I wonder what version of the software the replacement computer is equipped with.
I vote Stroker. 4.2 Parts in the 4.0
looking forward to mission improbable
In sales we avoid the word "Cheap" also! "Economical" is okay but "AFFORDABLE" is the go to...
Good thing you have a baguette budget because a dinner bun would soon end the finances for this project 😂
The wj intakes and the Bosch green top injectors are a good oem+ upgrades for the 4.0l . They sound great with a flowmaster super 44.
Yes, but they're not year, make and model specific to this vehicle
That’s only a upgrade if you use the WJ exhaust manifold though
Going to be fun to how much work you have to do to get into the 13's
A Stock 2009 5.7 with a map flash car run 13's, millions of motors around now to spray into the 9's. Nobody play's with the new Himi so bone yards are full of them. Build one for NOS and make a cheap mans hot rod v8.
get that ebay'd ecu to that capacitor fixing guy for a look over! or yeah, pull it apart for an eyeball
Only drove an XJ once but it felt very light & car-like. A 2WD should be pretty light.
I wish someone had made a cross flow head for the jeep
I got to watch the new Dodge commercial in the middle of your video 😵💫
Ad blockers will fix that.
FINISHING IMPROBABLE
So, is the loaf of bread in the car budget, or grocery budget?
The WAY OF THE GEARHEAD MONK
@∅🇺🇸
It just so happens, when you knead notepaper, you gotta get some dough first. Otherwise you are toast....
Chuck in Florida.
Are you going to clean or replace the fuel tank after seeing all the rust on the pump? I never know how serious to take rust in a tank.
Tony are there any inexpensive computers that you could adapt to your Jeep? The reason I bring that up is because I watched Dr Art's video on your Jeep's computer. What happens when the computer you got on ebay craps out.
Here for support
Assuming it's an 8.25 rear are you going to pull the gears out of an automatic?
As far as "economical" goes you should also keep in mind ZJ's and XJ's are getting rare and in some parts of the country impossible to find. I'm in the Central FL area and it used to be you could blindly throw a rock and hit an XJ or a ZJ around here. Now you might find one every couple of months go up for sale. I know because I've been looking for a V8 ZJ that is not trashed for years now. I only bring this up because part availability can drastically affect the economy of a build. I have trouble finding parts all the time locally, and online.
Build em they're at the scrap
@@redlight3932 Not anywhere near me. Which was my point. In some places they are almost impossible to find. All the good yards closed and are now industrial complexes, or apartments. I live in a deadzone that used to be a goldmine.
@@hardwire666too I know what you mean. It's the same here. Dead zone... Soulless zombies blindly stumbling around, bleating incomprehensibly, and going nowhere fast. No one even looks healthy anymore. A lot of them never even go outside into the REAL world. Thirty years ago this place was so full of life, and the sounds of people outside doing things... Now all I hear is its death rattle. Really sad state of affairs. Welcome to the JWO.
Great name for it "stale Bread" LOL
How ever much time you think a project will take to complete or how much itll cost, Just multiply those figures by 3 and you might in the ballpark
I thought that list was on a raw hide bone but it's even better 😂 a Walmart loaf of French bread 😂
Tony did you actually use a loaf of bread as your note pad? 😂 Man you have become the XJ whisperer…I’d love to find a rust free 4x4 XJ
Hi Uncle Tony, what times does a stock XJ like yours run?
I wonder how hard it would be to put a 440 in a 2 door Cherokee with 4x4 make a impresive mud bogger, put slicks all away around
Might make one scary launch down the 1/4 mile.
Gotta love Dr Art's video on that ECM; somehow spins a "you can only replace that, not fix it" into a pro-EFI video.
Have to admire his conviction.
Link to notepad!!
LOVE UR SHOW. I HAD A 99 XJ WITH 5SPD. I JUST DONT SEE HOW A 3000+LB VEHICLE RUNS 13'S WITH 200HP. BEST OF LUCK THO!!!
most XJs don't weigh over 3k lbs until I put my 300lb ass in the driver's seat.
The one in my profile pic weighed ~2850 as shown with a full tank, including 1/4" box tube bumpers, all the skidplates and some recovery gear. I have a 2 door under 2600 too
2 door XJ is barely 3000lbs. If that.
My 5.9 ZJ grand cherokee has 245hp and weighs 4300-4400 lbs and does 15s. So why wouldnt a vehicle 1300lbs less not be able too ?
Although my ZJ has 345ftlbs of torque.. about 120 more than the XJ haha..
OK hey Tony what do you mean 1/8 mile equivalent?
Hopefully this xj project is the type of project that I grew up with, car mags used to do things like this and print the costs, results etc for us little guys. I really felt betrayed when all the mags became advertising for the parts suppliers and everything was about bolting on $$$.
Sure mags are expensive to publish I get that but couldn't somebody kept printing a "how to" article along with all the spend, spend, spend ?
You should do the next one with a crown victoria, v eight, automatic
Rwd, Lotta weight to cut
got the same xj, auto though. I just replaced the fuel pump because the fuel pressure at the rail sucked. It is easy as you don't need drop the tank, truck starts now again like it used to, "with AUTHORITY." 216,00 miles, the regulator is built into the pump btw. Wow, you pump looks like chit LOL
Gonna eat that bread? I am hungry!!
2 door is nice
So on your drag Jeep, is swapping gear ratios in the cards? because that is the first thing that crossed my mind. porting the head sounds like a good idea, and the big investment there is time. what about a H.O. camshaft? or would that require another computer? it seems like i saw a video where somebody "upgraded" fuel injectors for better performance. but i cant tell you when or where i saw that.
Was that available on the year that jeep was made? He said it had to be a stock part available that year he wasn't swapping year to year parts.
