  • Ms. Patti Page again sings a beautiful ballad with "Stars Fell On Alabama". This oft recorded song's lyrical content is high in other-worldly romance, eluding to fantasy and tender intimacy. Patti's interpretation and mellow velvet voice captures every nuance of the song's meaning.

In March of 1972, I was 20 years old and in school at North Texas State University in the great jazz program there. During that time, I got a call to play a two-week tour with Patti Page. I really needed the money, so I was able to arrange my schedule to do the tour, make a little money, and then go back to school.
Patti was 45 years old at the time as I recall. And all I knew about her were her two hits, The Tennessee Waltz and How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?
So, I expected the tour to be dull and lacking in musical integrity. I was far too hip, you see, as an aspiring modern jazz musician playing in one of the top bands at one of the top jazz schools in the world to take seriously some pop star who had recorded some silly tunes in the 1950s.
Man, was I wrong. Was I ever so ridiculously wrong!
During the first rehearsal, the arrangements turned out to be very hip and featured many really beautifully composed standard songs that I had never heard Patti sing. Patti did sing her hits, for sure, but she did very much more than that - and sounded so damn good!
Patti was a lot of fun be with, too! She was like one of the guys after our performances and spent a lot of time with us. She was a gem.
At the end of that tour, I found myself wondering if there was any song from The American Songbook that Patti didn’t know. She seemed to know so many. And she sang them all so beautifully. And when she first sang this song, "Stars Fell On Alabama", as we accompanied her, she won us over and gained our unequivocal respect.
Never again after that tour did I underestimate anyone from the world of pop music when I happened to get a gig with them. Patti changed my young mind about that forever.
When I got the news that Patti died on New Year’s day, 2013, tears welled up in my eyes. But, in large measure, they were tears of gratitude for what I had learned from her about how never to prejudge or underestimate anyone in the world of music.
Artistic greatness can come from anywhere. It was such a surprise and such a joy when I was a very young man to hear it flow continuously from the voice of the sweet and endearingly ingenuous Patti Page.

This is a lovely rendition of the song. Her singing is romantic and soulful without any frills. The only thing is that "Stars Fell on Alabama" always calls for me a picture of rustic beauty, whereas the word "glamour" coming from her diamond-studded face makes the word seem so high-brow.

    Stars Fell On Alabama"
    We lived our little drama
We kissed in a field of white
    And stars fell on Alabama
    Last night
    I can't forget the glamor
Your eyes held a tender light
    While stars fell on Alabama
    Last night
I never planned in my imagination
    A situation so heavenly
A fairy land where no one else could enter
And in the center just you and me
My heart beat like a hammer
My arms wound around you tight
    And stars fell on Alabama
    Last night
    We lived our drama
We kissed in a field of white
    And stars fell on Alabama

Yes, what a mixture of feelings, this song bumped me today from an episode of "In The Heat Of The Night" sung by Carroll O'Connor to another character, late in the program. I was a teen in the '50s and recall how romantic and memorable it was then and Mr. O'Connor did it justice, nice voice.

Hello William, yes, Patti did record this song in 1953. It was released as part of an EP Mercury album of 4 songs. Then released again on a full 12 inch album entitled "Page One" Mercury MG-20095 Oct / 1955, but never on CD. I do believe it was released on a compilation cassette tape circa 1990's in the greatest hits genre. Check your local vinyl record store, Best regards!
